The 360's already generate a lot of heat. Scaling down the size will cut off airflow and make RROD's more common. The 360 CPU is already 45 nm, so they can't shrink it any further right now.

my 5th was the last one I got fixed through MS. Then I bought a arcade model from best buy with a 2 year warranty. Luckily I did cause that one fizzled and I got a new one under my new warranty. Im good until April 12th of next year. So Im prepped if anything happens.

Im a multiconsole owner this gen and am nothing but really happy about it. Even when I bought my 60 gig PS3, I got a warranty. Because technology runs its own course and you can't predict the wear you put on it. Everything I get electronically, I always get warrantys if available. It just makes sense to me. No matter what it is!

360 is built like a piece of crap. But I use it for enough stuff, that I dish it out to stick with it. I refuse to miss out on my 90% of friends personal and only on Live, because my friends list on PSN is pathetic... mainly cause for whatever reason my headset won't link. So I can't talk and make friends on there. Which then keeps me from having the most fun outta my PS3. Free PSN for me isn't a big deal when you can't get your headset to connect so you can interact with people.

Im well aware of 360's problems, Im not an idiot. I just consider myself more passionate about my #2 hobby that is gaming, than TONS of people on here. I'd go through this s#!t even it were with PS3 to keep up with their awesome gaming library, as I know deep down the fanboys would too!. It goes all ways my friends!

The overheating problem and RRoD can be fixed very easy. All you need to do is open X360 and add 3 PC fans. When you buy a flashed X360 it would already have modded extra fans in it. Aftering adding extra fans the RRoD rate drastically reduces to nearly nil. There is E74 but thats another thing.

So, if a modder at home can fix RRoD by simply adding extra fans in x360, why cannot MS do this?

Quite simple answer, sales. After you built a huge libary of games you would by a new console to play them again. Its quite a known fact alot of people have 2 X360s, so they can still play when one is on repairs, when warranty is out just buy a new one.

Peer 2 peer to play competetive? Sorry, I'm a serious online gamer & live doesn't cut it for the games. Xbox360 is a great big overpriced walkie talkie. The excuse to pay for live now is it's a social device. Like I said, I'm a serious online gamer not a little 11 year old girl.

Xbox360's controller feels really good though I give it that. It's ugly but surprising how well it fits the form of your hands. But you plug the mic in it & it needs batteries so I rather a mad Katz controller if I'm looking for comfy controls you know?

The hassle, the waiting, the fear, the redundant games, the nxe, the controller, cross game chat, the price totally not worth it to serious online gamers like me which is why xbox360 abadoned the hardcore & Sony captured them.

I know everyone's gonna say, "fix the current system before trying to reduce the system," but a redesign might be just what the 360 engineers need to add whatever it is to solve the existing problems while simultaneously reducing overall costs from material and so forth.

Bet Micro has a new 360 sku in the works which includes the Natal Module (as I just now coined the term) by default, is reduced in size, may include a slot-loading drive in place of the current tray-loader and costs at least 50 dollars less.

Why on gods green earth would you have a disc tray in the picture of an xbox slim? Disc trays are out man, PCs are the only people that can get away with a disc tray and even thats still tacky.

As you are well aware by now, Sony has announced their new $299 Slim PS3 that will be available the first week of September. I am happy for Sony and their Playstation customers. The Slim PS3 is 33% smaller and 36% lighter than the previous models. And their console is now half the price of their launch console in less than 3 years. I realize that Sony is primarily an electronics company and this plays to their strengths.

So where is our redesigned Slim XBOX 360?

You have been on the market for a full year longer than Sony. And given all the 360 reliability problems alone, you would think that you would have been the FIRST to redesign your console. I was really hoping to see an XBOX 360 Slim by now. In fact, I would just be happy if you fixed your reliability issues and moved the power brick into the current console form factor. That alone would be an incredible design victory right there.

Online rumors seem to indicate that you will drop the price of the current 360 Elite to $299. But that is hardly on par with Sony's recent announcement. Why?
You don't have Blu-ray (subtract $100)
You don't have built-in wireless (subtract $50)
You are allegedly removing the HDMI cable (subtract $20)
You charge for online (subtract $50)
Given the above, I would NOT expect you to deliver the same old Elite 360, with the huge power brick and minus the HDMI cable, for $299. That is hardly a deal by comparison. Of course, this is all rumor and speculation, not fact.

If you are not up to the task, can you back up an 18-wheeler full of money and dump it in my front yard? Along with a 360 Elite console and a postcard on it asking him "Can you redesign this for us? Thanks!"

A redesign would save you money in terms of manufacturing the console, just as it does Sony. A smaller 360 would use more consolidated and cheaper components, and less packaging, as such, more units would fit in less retailer warehouses and shelf space, and cost less to ship per unit as well, etc. The cost savings are not just in building the 360 alone.

Why does everyone say Natal is going to be huge? I just don't see it. As I've said before it's going to be expensive and has limited uses. I don't see how it's this huge thing that will win MS the console war. Can someone explain why Natal is huge, but PS motion controls or the wii aren't?

Internet lag is only caused by following
"Where your house locates"
"What company your internet connection is"
"Where the game host server is"
"Lagging problem in the game itself"

If you got faster connection in Live, it is because the conditions above fit into Live. Same for PSN.

But I do agree Live chat is really good feature and it is good to be in PSN. Then again, it is free. What do you want for free? If Sony puts Chatting in PSN, fine. I don't claim for that.

I have to agree it is a BIG console and there could have been a better design bt the 360s a great console.

Personally I agree with you mostly but as a fanboy I dissagree more because my point about redundant gaming implies that xbox360 games improve technically nothing where as ps3 games are making huge strides since thier previous installment. My perfect example is halo & gears vs resistance & metal gear solid 4.
Resistance 1 released online lagless with 40 players & next gen graphics. Resistance 2 added 300 hours of gameplay & gave us better servers & 20 more gamer slots to fill. Mgs4 added next gen graphics, superb quality & online on the disc with a built in online browser for the mgo reward shop straight from konami. The content is limitless. Almost all ps3 games all playing beyond what we thought is possible while 360 gamers settle for a higher number next to the title name indicating it's a sequel adding 1 more player slot and or ruining the game.

You may still enjoy it & I can't hate you for that but to defend it & it's pricetag & well were gonna have some problems. Btw, I like this argument between all of us, it's going great.

The Xbox 360 breaks five times as often as often as its closest failure-prone competitor, the PlayStation 3, a print edition-only Game Informer survey found.

The poorly manufactured, red ring of death-prone console has a 54.2 percent failure rate, compared to 10.6 percent for the PS3 and the Wii's 6.8 percent.

The magazine surveyed nearly 5,000 readers to get the data. And while the 360's rate is alarmingly higher than the others, it's still bafflingly low because it blows the mind to imagine that 45.8 percent of the consoles have not broken. Also, Microsoft's numbers are inflated because 360s are used the most of the three consoles. Results said 40.3 percent of 360 owners use the console three to five hours a day, compared to 37 percent of PS3 owners. Meanwhile, the plurality of Wii owners (41.4 percent) play their consoles less than an hour a day.

Microsoft also seized the gold medal for unhelpful customer service, taking nearly a month to repair or replace a console, while Nintendo and Sony stuck closer to a week. Only 37.7 percent of Microsoft customers found the company's customer service was "very helpful," compared to 51.1 percent fo Sony and 56.1 percent for Nintendo.

The most shocking number from the survey - and frightening from a consumer perspective - is only 3.8 percent of Xbox 360 owners said they'd never buy another Xbox because of hardware failure."

a price drop would be nice but a slim is not as necessary because the 360 was smaller than the original fat PS3 to begin with.

I dont see a 360 slim anytime soon in the future. The Valhalla chipsets are already slated for this year. A unified CPU and GPU with billed die sizes of 65nm or 45nm. The Xbox 360 is a damn good system, I am glad I bought one. But the problems I have had with it are just a pain. I just wished MS could have taken their time to fix those issues but.... I guess money had its ways through MS.

After my last breakdown, I have taken extra good care of my 360, leaving it near a window (There is a lot a wind out here in Wales), 360 in horizontal position, etc.... Now, my 360 has been going good for the past 5 months or so. *Sigh*...

With the Valhalla chipset on the way I think a slim 360 is likely. Microsoft just recently reduced there SKU's down to two $199 and $299 and I can see them doing it again in the Future, here is how i would like them to go.

i'm really going out on a limb here too so just bare with me but for a slim 360, I say take that Valhalla chipset (smaller, cooler etc) and redesign the HDD so that like the PS3 any 2.5" hdd can be inserted.

Take out the disc drive (DUn dun dun dun dunanananananana) and have every single xbox and xbox360 game past present and future available for download.

Sell this disc drive-less system SKU at $99 and then take the current elite xbox (with disc drive) and mark it down to $199.

1. I like the 360's design. I don't think it's too big at all.
2. I think they aren't slimming it down because they are working on the new 360 Pt. II.

Think about it. The failure rate is over 50% but it hasn't been completely fixed. MS is notorious for leaving their systems behind if it doesn't do what they want it to do. An Xbox 720 will be announced at E3 2010. Or... Xbox Natal? Hmmm =)

I like the design of the existing 360. I'm not keen on the cheap feel plastic and the off-white colour, but the overall design aesthetic is really nice.

I don't think the size is too big at all. The noise the thing makes is horrible though. My 1st 360 was a Day 1 launch model - failed, the next two were before the big updates were made that improved reliability and noise... So basically even though I'm on my 3rd 360 I'm still stuck with a noisey machine, that is a RRoD timebomb :(

I don't agree, X360 looks good and cooler than PS3 in my opinion. But how can you talk about a slim version when MS can't handle the current hardware. The effing failure rate is above 60%. They need total redesign, true, but I doubt its in their power to make it slimmer when it's that hot.
