Say what you want about Square Enix's output -- lord knows they try to be different. For Dissidia Final Fantasy, they could have just made a Final Fantasy-skinned fighting game. But usually, when a crossover game happens within a popular franchise, the results are far from ideal. Dissidia may look like a cash-in, where beloved characters are shoved into a fighting game template, but at the very least, it tries to keep from feeling like one. Instead, what you have is a different kind of fighting game, one mixed with the series' better qualities.
Given that Final Fantasy is fantasy, it's just as much about magic as it is swords and shields; so Dissidia encourages lots of flying or otherwise bounding around arenas as you trade blows with your opponents. It's like a Dragon Ball Z game. Merely saying that no doubt turns off some gamers, but even DBZ games have their high points. And in the confines of this franchise, it does make some sense.
