I have a launch 60GB PS3 and have yet to play any of my old PS2 games on it. I'm finished with PS2 games and am not looking back.

What's the big deal about backwards compatibility on the PS3? If people want to play their PS2 games that bad, then just freaking plug in your PS2 again. Quit your whining and enjoy the cheaper PS3.

This is Kotaku trying to make the lack of BC on PS3 slim a big deal.
Nobody, I repeat nobody predicted/expected BC compatibility to return with the PS3 slim. That would defeat the whole purpose of the slim, to reduce production costs, and at the same time it would alienate Phat owners.

I never heard a single rumour about that. If anything BC was expected to come back in form of SOFTWARE BC, so every PS3 can have it.

It'd only be a good thing, but even without it the Trey is the most well-rounded console on the market. I'd love to play my MGS:Essential Collections on my Trey though

I have the original 60GB model. I play a few PS2 games on my PS3. The only difference is the graphics are not the same on the PS3. So after a while I play my PS2 game on PS3, I really don't see what's the point of putting backward capability where everyone even myself have a PS2 to play it on. It just doesn't looks good with backwards capability PS2 games playing on the PS3. Ps2 graphics don't look right on the PS3. So I continue playing my PS2 games on the PS2. And I enjoy playing PS3 games more.

8 times out of 10, you pay less, you get less. The PS3 Slim just happens to be one of those 8 times.

But they haven't explained why they've patented a method for introducing it.

Yeah, BC is nice but certainly not a deal-breaker. I got my PS1 2, 3 & slim on Preorder & still use em all ^^

Backwards compatibility is the real reason why xbox 360 is winning the console wars, sometimes I hope they do win to teach sony a lesson to keep B/C or your going to lose sony's loyal fans respect.

Why dont you take out Full software PS1 emulation? Alotta people that buy ps3s werent even old enough to think when you made the PS1.im 22yrs old btw.I got my ps1 in 1996,when it 1st landed in my country.My same PS1 ,works faultlessly,as perfect as it did when I unboxed it. And guess what?Ive used my ps3 for PS1 games.Namely FF7 and FF8.even MGS1 and GT1 and Tekken 3,Tekken2,Tekken1. The list goes on

I mean first you complain of the price, Sony lowers it, you cry. Next you complain about the PS3 not having games, Sony and their developers bring you some heavy stuff, people still complain. Now they lower the price to the sweet spot and people are still moaning and groaning.

There is just no please some people! You wanted an affordable PS3 and Sony is delivering albeit minus some features but a low priced PS3 none the less.

If you wanted BC you should have forked over the dough when the BC units were in the market, i know i did and i am happy as can be, just finished off Persona 4 and now i'm getting started on SMT: Nocturne.

Anyway, this rant doesn't really matter because people won't be happy until PS3's come as prize inside a box of Frosted Flakes and even then they would find something to bit*c about.

I personally have a launched 60gb ps3 & a 80gb ps3 & I am not going to risk having any problems happen to any of my ps3's just for the fact that i wanted to play one of my ps2 games. Thats why u have ebay, craigslist, & other bargain places online to get stuff cheaper & more affordable. Bought a ps2 slim from craigslist for $50 so i can enjoy my ps2 classics when ever i feel like playing them.

I can understand the reason for BC but if u are gonna use that excuse of the reason for not buying a ps3, i feel sorry for u, because u will definately be missing out on some of the BEST EXCLUSIVES coming out this gen over BC. Man id prolly shoot myself already if i didnt own a ps3 by now.

I got mine, June 1996,It was an early bday present lol my bday is in July. Man,was the happiest day of my life lol I played Demo Disk 1 for a long long long time lol,with Rage Racer,Abes Oddessy,Ohh. .the memories.you see why bc is important?its so nostalgic.I also wanna look back in a few more years and think,man. . .MGS2. . .Wow. . .Final Fantasy X . .wow. . . .GT3. . . Seriously, give the fans what they want.

First with the 60GB and then with the 80GB that could play more than 95% of the PS2 games out there.

Guess what, if you are still complaining about the lack of BC, then you should have bought a system that had it. Perhaps the very well priced MGS4 80GB PS3.

But you know what the #1 reason why BC is brought up? Because people want something to b*tch about.

Next time someone sends you a way to play all of your old games in a system, perhaps you might consider it a bit more seriously rather than waiting forever and a day to find out that it's not there anymore because all those people who wanted BC didn't buy the original platform with BC and they removed it because, obviously, people just didn't want BC.

This wouldn't be such a big deal if we weren't all jealous of the guys who own 60 gig PS3s. It's not right that some people have BC and some don't.

BC would be really good to have. There are some old classic games that u just couldn't get it anywhere else that u still want to play. But really, there are 130 something million PS2 out there, u don't really need BC. It is good to have or make PS3 even more appealing, but not necessary.

As a 60 gig owner, I couldn't imagine have a PS3 that doesn't play PS2 games. Being able to play PS2 games opens up a whole library of possible games to play. And some of them hold up even after the test of time. Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3, God of War I & II, Resident Evil 4, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Soul Caliber, and other great series and games still hold up after all this time. And they all look great on the PS3.
I know PS3 games are the main focus. Of course it would be. But its also nice to at least have the option. I know my friends and a lot of people who are still relunctant to buy one because the lack of Backwards Compatibilty. Sometimes they still need or want to play something familiar before they take the plunge into all these new games and series that they are not familiar with.
There are a ton of games that are still fun to this day to play with friends.
To tell you the truth, I wouldn't buy a PS3 unless it was a 60 gig. 4 usbs, Media Readers, Backwards Compatibilty all excellent features.
But I agree with that everyone has been saying. Seems like Sony took it out so they could still push sales of the PS2 since they make somewhat of a profit still.
Remember PS2 is one of the best ever periods of gaming. Ever.
Why would we not want access to that? You can't move on to the present and future unless you at least remember the past.
I really do hope that Ps2 Backwards Compatibility comes out sooner rather than later.
Think how many people will buy the new slim because its 4 systems in one for $299. (blueray,PS3,PS2,PS1) Now thats not bad.
And lets not forget, the potential money they could make selling ps2 games at the store.

Don't have PS3 yet, although I'm solidly behind Sony and not Microsoft. My PS2 is still my gaming station unfortunately cuz I'm poor. It would be nice to have BC on a PS3 because I still play all 3 MGS (of course not MGS4 yet) games, GOW, and NFL 2K5. I've never seen 2K5 in hi-res (progressive scan). The PS3 plus an HDTV could do that.

I'm guessing no one on here plays sports games cuz everyone only mentions MGS, SOTC, and GOW. ESPN NFL 2K5 still dominates my time, although I want Madden 10...along with a PS3 and an HDTV. Those days are coming soon if I could find a friggin job. The recession suxxxxxx.

re-releases on PSN do,that's where the PS2 games will be in the near future,that's my opinion and i'm sticking to it :-)

1) I had three PS1 RPG's that still needed completion.

2) Had 4 PS2 RPG's that needed completion as well as two action games requiring completion

3) Wanted Blu-Ray......

....and was willing to pay for one machine that did it all. I have bought and played over 30 PS3 titles, but I've also bought another three PS2 games and I think one PS1 game off Ebay.

It was important to me during the upgrade process. I'm sure many people are upset about not having BC with the Slim, but they should've bought the BC versions when they had the chance if it was so important.

I honestly thought that I could be able to PS2 games on the new PS3. I love the ratchet and clank series an jack and Dexter series. Now if I want to be able to play any of the old games I have to buy a PS2 or get a 60GB PS3.

...I see this as another cover up. I got some info stating something about the BC being play tested, and from what this source has been good with in the past, something tells me that Sony is using that as a cover up to something good that they want to reveal when the time is right.

By the way, some 360's...don't have BC, either. Just thought I'd add that into the mix.

YES I hugely demand BC in my consoles because I love the new stuff, but Im EXTREMELY nastalgic and ALWAYS love playing classics...

I appreciate not having a PS1, 2, and 3 hogging my floor. I get extra room and space... with my 60 gig PS3 doing it all for me! couldn't get any better!

PS2 BC was important to me which is why I picked up a Euro 60GB PS3.

I've used it loads to play stuff like Persona 3 FES and 4, it's been nice having one console that can play both PS3/PS2 games.

But the PS2 BC feature is now less relevant to me. There's very few 'must play' PS2 games coming out now, and it's obvious PS2 development is slowly winding down.

I hope my 60GB PS3 lasts a long time - but if I ever need to buy a new PS3 I'd MUCH rather have a PS3 Slim, and if I'm desperate to play old PS2 games for a burst of nostalgia, then I'll buy a cheap second hand, or even a brand new PS2.

First you gotta pay 300USD for old hardware (imo rip off). i wouldnt pay more then a USD 59 for such outdated hardware even then it would bleed my eyes to use a console.

I really pity you noobs. Few days back i was playing Dungeon keeper 2 on my PC its such a classic. I could load up any title even if its 10 years old and not worry about compatibility issues on the PC. I really dont see why ppl bend over to sony and mircosoft.

Both of which charge you alot of their games, which are inferior in quality and few years later they dont even provide you backward compatibility.

I sold my PS2 and around 40 games not long after getting my PS3 as I never played PS2 games again after getting PS3. I have a B/C PS3 but dont miss my old PS2 games as I have loads of new games (PS3) which I enjoy more.
What I'm saying is that B/C doesn't matter to me as I will never use it. I do realise that some will use B/C but not me.

IMO, I really, REALLY want PS2 BC. I don't want to fork out €100 for a sh!tty slim PS2 that breaks easly. But, I've come to the conclusion that there's no point in complaining about PS2 BC because Sony will never make a PS3, or release a firmware, that has it. They never listen to the fan(boy)s and now they're releasing the PS3 slim as a way of milking all the fanboys' money. Seriously, who in their right mind would buy a slim PS3 when they already have the big one? What does the slim do that the big one doesn't? inb4 bigger HDD, I could pop a 500GB HDD into my 80GB PS3.

Damn, full BC would've been nice. I travel a lot and it would be nice to be able to play my PS1,2, and 3 games all on one console. Oh well. I'll just spend more time playing current-gen games.

While I think BC is certainly a great feature, from personal experience it isn't a deal breaker. I bought my 60gb PS3 specifically because it had BC and I heard the newer 80gb models wouldn't have it. How much use have I actually gotten out of the BC? Well..not very much. I played about halfway into RE:2 and screwed around on Metal Gear VR Missions a bit, but aside from that, I haven't even thought about the fact that I have it. My experience may differ from those who were huge PS2 fans, as most of my PS library is original PS1 games (I had both PS2 and xbox last gen, but never really used either aside from Metal Gear and Halo games). I think if Sony can include BC, they should, but if it's not feasible then leave it be.

...And this is why Sony's in third place. Not only are they the most expensive console, all the other current-gen consoles are backwards-compatible. Wii is fully compatible with Gamecube, and the 360 is mostly compatible with Xbox games, from what I gather. Not to mention there are far more 360 and Wii exclusives each than PS3 exclusives, so you end up paying more, for less.

Why they couldnt implement some sort of emulation is beyond me, but either way BFD. This feature is only truly important to a select few, which incidentally probably have a PS2 anyhow.

Im sure it saves sony money by not including it, so they shouldnt. Sure it would be great to have, but didnt you buy a PS3 (or 360) to play next-gen titles?

I understand this move. It can eventually put more cash in Sony's pockets since they are making big moves with making PSOne and PS2 classics available online for digital download. I never fire up my old PS2, but now that I think about it, I may have to dip back into my library.

The PS3 does a nice upscale for PS2 games, which does wonders in todays HDTVs. BC should be there and it is not, no way to spin. Just because BC owners dont use does not mean others wont. I have used it plenty, and i Have a PS2, but for the HDTV the PS3 plays better the PS2 games (well some are unplayable, but most of my games are playable; like the GTA series, SoTC, ICO, RE4, Devil May Cry 3, Final Fantasy X, FF XII, GT 3 & 4, GOD OF WAR looks awesome with the upscaling of the PS3).

I find that PS1 and PS2 RPG's are better than PS3's so BC is important to me because I get tired of FPS and sports games, which seem to dominate this gen. Because I had BC I could play Persona 4, Devil Summoner 2 when they came out, I will be able to play Mana Khemia 2 and still play Suikoden 2, San Andreas and Vice City, Vandal Heart, Vanguard Bandits, and many other titles, which may be graphically inferior to today's games many of them; in my opinion have better stories.

there are some games that are more fun on the ps2. i bought and returned pes 08and 09 for ps3 cos i couldnt get the same thrills as on the ps2 game. as a matter of fact i think id never bother to try any other next gen soccer game. it tries to be too real and unpredictable and makes for less fun.thats just me...but like a lot of us feel, bc isnt necessary anymore.the ps3 has lots of great games(except pes)imho

I enjoy playing my Ps2 I dusted her off to replay some old games and she sists next to my PS3 but it would be nice to pack the PS2 and put her away for all the games we played together. So since the PS3 is not backwards compatible why does Sony not release an emulator via the firmware update 3.0

Im surprised that they didnt include backwards compatibility seeing as most PS2's get the "Disk Read Error." You might as well let it play PS2 games because the PS2 couldn't play em. Slim down the system, slim down the features.

For those complaining you can buy a PS2 on ebay for $40 with $6 shipping... I would rather have a whole seperate console for old games than to have BC and risk wearing out my new hardware faster, maybe just me though.

I personally prefer playing my PS2 games on the PS2 itself. It just doesn't get any better than the PS2 OS. such a classic startup I'll never get enough of.

I bought a launch 60, I still play my ps2 games on my ps3 simply cuz, its looks better, sounds better and now it even rumbles better. I play Baldurs Gate I and II, Champions of Norrath I and II, brotherhood of Steel, destroy all humans I and II, the ps2 Star Wars Legos looks amazing. The backwards compatibility significantly enhances the looks and sounds of the ps2 games. If for that reason alone their should always be b/c on the ps3, not to mention you spend all that money on the console the least they could do is allow it make your old ps2 games look and sound better.

PS3 BC in PS3 is not required,
