Chaos Group recently showed off their custom V-Ray ray-tracer that runs on a GPU. Although currently coded using Nvidia's CUDA API, they are planning on porting to OpenCL for use on any GPU with OpenGL support.
Chaos Groups ray-tracer allows for near real time ray-tracing of complex scenes, instead of taking upwards of minutes to hours when done on a CPU.
