To watch 3d bluray u will need a 3d hd tv then a ps3 firmware update or a hd 3d player and a 3d glass.

I could of sworn Sony said they could make the player work with 3D just by a FW update. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought I read that... I can't find the quote however.

The 3d Blu-Ray standard was finalized already and includes the capability to be played over current Blu-Ray players with a firmware upgrade. The TV is what has to be 3d compatible from the start. The Blu-Ray player can be updated to be compatible with 3D. All it has to do is send an alternating set of images (left eye, right eye) at double the frame rate that the film was shot on (typically 48fps), and the TV then displays them in a way so that the 3D glasses see them in 3D. The 3D Blu-Ray standard also is backwards compatible with 2D TV sets, as it can just ignore the right eye's frames when outputting. PS3 is fully capable of playing 3D movies. It has already been shown (CES this year) to be capable of playing 3D games as well (Motorstorm:PR and Wipeout HD were shown in 3D).

Same logic applies to any given platform or newly released tech. The 360 was considered outdated the second it was anounced to sport the same format as a Playstation 2 and lacked built-in wi-fi and the ability to render games in 1080p native, but here we are and 360 is classified as a next generation platform.

People, the reality is that everything becomes outdated almost instantaneously after release. For example, I was an ealry adapter of the ipod touch and I see many things in the networking and os that are very outdated.

Ms and Sony have a deal going down soon with windows 7 so just like Toshiba, Ms will have the ability to use blue ray tech, If sony say no then Ms can sue the pants of Sony, it is against the law for a business to exclude one company, on rival grounds. And if Sony want blue ray to go the whole way with its tech, then some one is going to have to give from both sides, When it comes to true 3d for games on both these consoles then none of them will be doing it, @ 1080p with loads of detail you need more cpu and gpu power then what is really out there, it can be done but at a cost and that coast is graphics:) 480p here we come.

if bluray or sony went into this direction,ps3 will be there just like all the other firmware updates.it's called future proofing your console.

but you MAY need a 3dtv,1080p,hdmi.but since sony wouldn't say HOW it worked,we will have to wait and see.

i know alot of people are hyped for 3d gaming, but in my mind it's more gimmicky b.s like motion control, i had a wii........traded it, i game on pc and i'd like to see more realistic graphics, better performance in games over more ways to play games, the focus of gaming has become more about the peripherals and consoles than the games

I am currently using Nvidia 3D shutter glasses and I can tell you that games would take a big dip in frame rate if you want 3D enabled.
I can run things fine on my PC with current equipment but can tell you if we are seeing frame dips on current PS3/360 games with not many actually running at a steady 60FPS even at 720P and what about when there is bottlenecks with on screen action it will dip even further. Most games I find are hitting about 30FPS with all bells and whistles turned on graphically on the current gen of consoles.
So side by side 3D method currently on PC using shutter glasses about halves your frame rate but you are getting a full 1680x1050 resolution picture and getting a refresh in each eye of 60hz meaning you require a monitor/projector/tv that can handle an input of 120hz and output to the screen at 120 hz.

The other method is checkerboard 3D which meshes the left and right eye frames together but can be at 60 hz which I think would be the way to go for consoles, it's not full resolution like the other method but I do not notice to be honest.

I currently have a Samsung Plasma with a 3D feature which I use the Nvidia glasses with from a PC via HDMI which is checkerboard 3D and I also have a Samsung 22" 2233RZ monitor which is side by side 3D at 1680x1050 at 120HZ using a dual link DVI cable.

Movies on the other hand are a different beast, I know H264 even has a 3D profile. Movies could use checkerboard 3D out to a DLP or Samsung 3D ready TV which I currently do as well as gaming but the movies are utter crap and D grade at best. Full resolution 1080P Bluray 3D will require a new TV and a new Bluray player as it would require dual HDMI to the TV and from the player. This would give 1080P resolution and 60HZ to both left and right eyes (so 120HZ), that would be the pinnacle of 3D movies but would require alot of consumers to upgrade equipment obviously. I think checkerboard 3D is the go as current base of that style of display is already at over 2 million in the US, I am in Australia and only TV display I could find to get 3D was a 50inch 1360x768 Samsung Plasma which works really well as there is no DLP TV's here in Australia like the US, also I had to order in Nvidia 3D shutter glasses from overseas as they are not here yet either. Very happy with current setups but really want 3D to take off this time around as it is not like any of the headache inducing methods of the past, it is now really viable to play and watch on for a long time these days.

I am not sure on 3d. I mean, I watched a few 3d movies on my Samsung. I'm rocking 42 inches, 120hz. While the 3d is fluid/smooth it tends to bother my eyes after awhile. (traditional red/blue glasses)

Traditional red/blue glasses says it all mate as to why your eyes can't handle it for long.
Shutter glasses or polarized glasses are full colour.

Can't stand red/blue anaglyph 3D, cheap nasty and makes the 3D scene into a gimmick compared to what is really available.

Do you know what constitutes 3d ready TV's?
I was under the impression they exist right now, without such labels and that later on, when the word is wider known, the manufacturers will place a label stating such (as I am hearing they are doing right now)

Or... is there some modifications to their current designs that need to be done to make a T.V, "3d ready?
