Blu-ray: 71; HD DVD: 29

Since the beginning of the year, Blu-ray disc sales have doubled its rival HD DVD. And, according to Nielsen VideoScan, last week was no different.Blu-ray accounted for 71 percent of all HDTV DVD title sales last week, compared to 29 percent for HD DVD.That's according to an article by Reuters.The news service says Blu-ray was aided by the release of the Ben Stiller comedy, A Night at the Museum, which is available only on Blu-ray....

can we stop posting the bluray vs hd-dvd? unless it specifically has to do with gaming... this news doesn't even mention playstation.

there's no denying that (for better or worse) the Blu-Ray movie format is so closely intertwined with the success of the PS3 (and vice-versa).

The more dominant Blu-Ray becomes, that much more appealing the PS3 becomes as a capable movie/media player AS WELL as an awesome gaming machine.

(OK, OK, I've gotta confess a bit of bias here: I love movies as much as I do video games, so this news may not be as welcoming to others as it is to me...but it does get voted in, so SOMEONE else appreciates it.) :)

i can see your point but as tourch has said its related to the PS3 which is of course a console so its relavent also as theres the HD DVD add on for the 360. if your getting really "sick" of this kinda news then just ignore all the threads about HD DVD and BluRay... simple

as for the news, congrads again BluRay i didnt expect anything different. as for me im NOT going to buy the HD DVD add on for my 360 as it COULD turn out to be a bad investment, BUT if MS had included one then i would no doubt have brought some HD DVDs so i can say with nearly no doubt the PS3 is the main reason theres more being sold

this ISNT a fanboy comment, i just wanted to add a statement, i live in a popular town/city in the UK and the local retailer for this area is GAME. i went in there today to perchase some MS game points to buy the Gears of War maps and i saw 3 pre-owned PS3s, while i was waiting in the que the man infront asked of any deals on the PS3 and the man said no, there not selling PS3s hardly at all but he (i dont know if he ment him or GAME) thinks Sony are realising there products are too expensive as there also doing a price cut for the PSP as of 2morrow, from £150 to £130

now as i said this ISNT a fanboy comment as im not saying anything bad about the PS3, but with this news i cant see the PS3 selling very well AT THE MOMENT in the rest of the UK as like i have said i live in a very popular town/city, which IS good news for us, as if this continues Sony will have NO choice to give us a price cut :D and then well i mite get one myself :P hehe

HD DVD had a bit of a comeback and more titles are being released over the coming months, The beginning of the year was definitely slow for releases from HD DVD though.

I was just saying that HD DVD sales picked up again in april and this article points out good sales for blu-ray from the beginning of the year whilst lot's of movies were released compared to HD DVD, but i'd like to point out that blu-ray has tooted it's horn on every good month it's had up until april where it's pretty clear HD DVD has picked up again from a huge spike in sales from an organized anniversary buy and more new releases and now we don't hear amazing results from the blu-ray association of amazing sales through another month being april but an average over the first part of the year. + planet earth still outsells the Blu-ray version and has done since release. Not bad for a format that has considerably less players in the market place!

I am with you Deep if Universal was to go to Blu Ray then HD DVD would all but be dead. I really have never cared for this format war but because the PS3 uses BR I have too. Because I do not want a dead format in the PS3. But like I said about Universal if they are to put out Jurassic Park I would buy a HD DVD player just for that movie.

So you never know Universal has some of the best movies out there and if they bring them out they could just help sell more HD DVDs.

At the moment Universal is weaker than BluRay exclusive Sony Pictures, Fox Pictures, and Disney Pictures, and they are also weaker than format neutral Warner and Paramount.

If you don't believe that then just examine box office receipts for the past year.

i completely agree kamisama i am one of the people that want to see these film (especially Spiderman 3), but cant be arsed to go to the cinema as im to busy lol, shame they wont come to 360 as i would download it in HD :(

Numbers are misleading. Look at actual dedicated hardware players, and you see HD-DVD has a 4 to 1 ratio. Hardware drives software, and as HD-DVD continues to drop in price the software sales will increase. Especially if Wal-Mart ordered HD-DVD players.

No I am not a fanboy, I own both formats. Just taking an overall look at the industry from a non-PS3 fanboy view.

Although HD-DVD has a sale ratio 4 - 1 that means nothing when the actual software sales is way higher on the blu-ray side. blu-ray is selling way more movies than HD-DVD is and that is where the real battle lies. and on top of that i dont think that ratio is right any way bcuz that doesnt count the ps3s which adds a big part.

What you fail to account for is that a portion of the people buying PS3's, did so only for a blu-ray player. Others, like me, bought the PS3 and was gald it had it. I buy and rent BR movies. Your logic is flawed. By the way ... did you hear of the new BR PC drive for 299$. It's on the front page.

BD will win - and the reason y its even taking this long is because greedy MS and dumb toshiba think they can win - u can give HD DVD player for free and it still wouldnt win

its all going to be OVER! once universal starts to see they are losing alot of money not being bluray then they will go neutral and itll be over! thats all we need...

Sony sould only bring spiderman 3 to blueray and NOT DVD. try to force everybody quickly onto blueray. Hell. why not stop all DVD support.
Sony would take such a huge lose they may have to fire 1200 more people, but all is fare in love and war.

Lol, that would pretty much kill HDDVD, but it would also cost Sony hundreds of millions in DVD sales. Not going to happen. Making it a two week time exclusive or something would be smart. No DVD release period would be incredibly stupid.

I have a PS3 and X360 with the HD-DVD add on but i have no doubt Blu-ray will win in the end with all the studio support it has. Since Microsoft didn't put and HDMI output on the original 360 and i don't want to spend the money on an elite till they put in the new chips when i rent from netflix if a movie is on both High Def formats i go Blu-ray to get 1080p from my PS3 and i get the HD-DVD exclusives for the 360 add on so my que at netflix looks like this 35 Blu-ray and 7 HD-DVD that goes to show how many exclusives that HD-DVD has for my preference in movies. Which in my opinion is not a good sign!

well if you bought a XBOX 360 add-on, HD-DVD went cold. You're HD-DVD is a total junk. But if you bought PS3 and blu-ray went cold, Games are still coming out in blu-ray, at least it's not a junk. That's the differences.

I never post here anymore since I now have the Ps3 and spend all my free time playing games and watching Blu-ray movies on my 56" 1080p HDTV. But I couldnt resist this topic. I said in the beginning that Blu-ray would fly by and outsell hd-dvd right from the start, and now since November 06 they have continued to outsell them by a growing percentage. This trend will continue with huge movies coming out EXCLUSIVELY for Blu-ray.
On May 22nd two movies will come out only on blu-ray that are and were HUGE hits in the Box office. "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" (#22 in the top all time Box office) and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest" (#6 on the all time box office hits) Also before the end of this year we can expect to see "Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End" on Blu-ray and it should be in the top 5 all time hits and could very easily be #2 or #3.

Expect to see the Blu-ray percentage going to 80 and 85 percent the end of this month and expect Hd-dvd to die by the end of this year.

People now buy HDTV's

So it sounds more obvious to have a HD-DVD player then. The term HD people are familiar with, the DVD are more people familiar with. BluRay sounds like a total different thing, one that in peoples minds are different standards, so they are afraid of not being able to play their DVD collection anymore.
