How Nintendo saved gaming

iTWire writes "Some are concerned that the popularity of the Wii has diluted the once deep and rich gaming landscape, but instead they should embrace the legitimacy to the hobby that the Wii has brought to the industry."

The_Beast6121d ago

it was 250$ and thats the only reason it sold....

Monteblanco6121d ago (Edited 6121d ago )

If so, why my mom wants to buy a Wii for herself whereas she probably have no idea of a XBox is?

ZombieAutopsy6121d ago

like Monteblanco said his mom wants one, it goes after different group of people. My mom has one, my 3 best friends moms have one, my aunt wants to get one(she just went and bought a dsi though instead)...its just a Mom type console (and by that i mean more of a casual gamer). I dont personally think it saved gaming, it might of helped broaden its horizons so to speak but without it the xbox360 and ps3 would have got some more sales.

" My mom has one, my 3 best friends moms have one, my aunt wants to get one(she just went and bought a dsi though instead)...its just a Mom type console"

The insecurity is so obvious here, you just don't want to be associated with a Wii because it would make you less "HARDCORE"...

"but without it the xbox360 and ps3 would have got some more sales."
It takes a good marketing plan, and thats what Nintendo used.
I don't think Ps3 would have sold more, i think most 360 owners( and i mean the 360 only owners) would just buy PC games.

ZombieAutopsy6119d ago

i never said i didnt want to associate with it, its your insecurities that are coming out. Id love to own a Wii but id rather buy games for the systems i have. Not sure how u got what u did out of my post i was just stating things i have noticed. Also how can u say the Ps3 and 360 wouldnt have seen a little bit more sales if they were the only 2 consoles...im sure anyone would agree they would of see some.

i always saw nintendo not saving the industry but helping it

i dunno it really just depends on how you see it really

EvilTwin6121d ago

I agree -- Nintendo did more to help gaming with Wii and DS. They didn't save gaming, as the industry was in no need of saving.

More gamers is just a byproduct of popularizing a new method of controlling videogames. I'm all for more control options -- I can't go back to dual analog for FPS or a golf sim now -- and we'll be getting even more from Sony and Microsoft. Win-win.

ChickeyCantor6120d ago

" as the industry was in no need of saving. "
Perhaps not, but do keep in mind that the economic breakdown was a hell to many developers. Im not saying Nintendo saw this coming, rather that many developers could actually survive due lower development costs when developing for the Wii.

Saaking6121d ago

They're introducing gaming to people who would otherwise not know about it so in a way they're helping the industry; however definitely not saving.

NexGen6121d ago

The 80's. Back then, that was a save that brought video games back from the brink of extinction. Arguably, that save in the 80's evolved to where we are today. I will say though, as innovative as Nintendo is with their modern power glove (wii), they sure seem to be stuck in the early 2000's as far as software goes.

bigjclassic6121d ago

If there was no Wii, there would just be the HD consoles which all devs cannot afford to produce games on. It is an expensive process to make HD era games., on the flip side the Wii/DS allows devs to be as creative as possible.

Also, gaming is more popular with women and older gamers now because of Nintendo and is helping the game industry grow at an enormous rate.

Neither MS or Sony really caters to the core/casual crowd and that attention is needed.

Im just glad, that Nintendo is still in the game because they truly are the best 1st party dev, and gaming would be nothing without them.

Etseix6121d ago

yea, not a lot of devs can do games for xbox n ps3, still, i guess its better,
remember No More Heroes?, , i bet u do, remember how the dev was feeling bad because it didnt sell well? and yea a lot of people bet is the best game for Wii, but why it didnt sold like hot-cake liek teh Wii?, because 1 simple reason, the *audience/gamers* that like those kind of games, are on xbox n ps3, if a lot of new devs want to do a game on the Wii they need to mage a *casual* game, that way it will sell, if they make a hardcore one, it wont sell that good, =/

EvilTwin6120d ago (Edited 6120d ago )

Etseix -- Twilight Princess and Galaxy aren't really "casual" titles. Yes, they're first party games...but they aren't mini game compilations, and they sold quite well. Established IP's like Resident Evil and Call of Duty do alright on Wii, too. People who swear by FPS alone are definitely on 360/PS3, but beyond that...I'm not so sure. Dead Space didn't put up GTA numbers, after all.

NMH is a strange title to bring up, because initially everyone thought it was a failure. Then it kept selling consistently. It's sold something like 400,000 copies now...enough that Grasshopper green lit a sequel...and generated the proclamation that they were "weeping with delight" at the sales figures.

hes talking about NEW devs not great devs,
im talking about people that want to make a new game,
thats why i didnt call out Nintendo IPs,
i guess u misunderstand me there.

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg23d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree22d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai22d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (1996) Still Feels Like Peak 90s Star Wars

This game along with Rogue Squadron got me into to Star Wars. The release of special edition VHS Star Wars collection was perfectly times on top of all that. 😆

Redgrave53d ago

Because it is.

Please re-release this.

SimpleSlave53d ago (Edited 53d ago )

But it wasn't. Although I do agree that some of the tie-in media, like the novels and comics, were pretty good.

Still, games like Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, Rogue Squadron, and the space sims were peak 90s Star Wars. Shadows fell flat because of the abysmal controls and unimaginative levels. And if you wanted to really experience the seedy side of the universe, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 was peak, and it wasn't even close.

Regardless, and much to my dismay, we got the better version thanks to Ubislop in Outlaws, which is what Shadows should've been, albeit at a smaller scale.

As a kid me and my cousins loved this game . I have great memories with this one and the Star Wars pod racer game .
