its not forced on you to install but some games can load faster if they are =)

What about all the people without hard drives? Microsoft hasn't forced installs yet because they cannot... it's not a moralle code. Sony gives the option to developers because the PS3 came with a hard drive.

When you have the option, yes.

if the install is optional its no problem as i can slip the disc in and play straight away as soon as i get it. After ive played the campaign or i have spare time when im not playing ill just select to install the game for better play, faster loads and a near silent console. Its the best of both worlds and it isnt needed too play.

Something I dont understand is why do you need to install the game at all? and why is MS developers pushing installs on disk when the Arcade model is practically disk-less?. That sounds unfair. On top of that, xbox HDD is non standard and the prices are just ridiculously high.

Halo 3 runs slower from your hard drive as it was optimized for running on the disc.

If you have halo 3 look at the back. It says the same thing:

OPTIMIZED FOR HARD DRIVE.

And we all know what happened when it was installed.

Lars barkin confirmed that the ODST disc has been designed to run smoother with an install but it is not neccesary to play the game. The Halo 3 disc in the set still has the same multiplayer issuse with the install.

as long as there is an option it is no problem. the problem is when it is mandatory like so many playstation games.

Being able to install full games and get faster loading times & reduce the wear & tear of the disc reader is a good thing.

Mandatory installs that take 20 minutes but don't improve anything noticeable is a bad thing. If the Blu-Ray reader in the PS3 was faster there probably wouldn't be any mandatory installs.

If I only got the choice on the PS3 to install the complete game to the HDD, and had to be less afraid my PS3 bluray diode wouldn't crap out on me like it did when my PS3 was just 3 weeks old...

But Sony doesn't give me that choice. They: 1. Force me to take an install like MGS4 before the game and then between the levels or 2. Don't install and have insane loading times.

Both options suck and the BluRay diode still gets hammered every time I play the games...

I will agree with you that I'd like an option to install PS3 games, you have to remember that Bluray is huge and thus PS3 games are much large than 5-8 gigs big. You'd need a very big harddrive to be able to install PS3 games (ex. MGS4 is like 40-48 gigs big no?)

Uhm no. Even most PS3 games fit on a DL-DVD. Thing is, for example Uncharted had its data copied 3 times over on the disc, so they could implement some special loading feature to reduce loading times. The actual data could fit a DL-DVD.

The only game not fitting it would be MGS4, but that isn't strange with all that CGI and 8 to 9 hours cutscene BluRay movie. Which, on the other hand was something like 30GB and not 48.

Besides that, the PS3 HDD can be upgraded by yourself to 320GB or 500GB right so no problem right?

It never started out as DLC, it was always going to be a retail release.

could it be cause micro gives you the option and not only that but it has been proven that multi plat games that need a install on the ps3 didnt make much of a difference when the 360 didnt need it (gta4)
