^That's worth an article by itself, and it's why I've always had a problem with Playstation. From the beginning, Sony tried to posture that it was the only kid in town and the BS steadily grew. "PS2 will deliver Toy Story graphics" set a new bar four outright lies, and Jack Tretton's "people will buy the system without games" comments are legendary for sheer lack of respect for the consumer.

Seeing people pass off disrespect from executives time after time with crap comments like "well the average consumer doesn't really listen to them" and "they're just confident" is mind-numbing. There is no other product in the world that would continue to be respected after telling its consumers lines like how they'll "...work a second job to pay for Playstation 3" and "Playstation 3 will bring discipline to our nation".

That's not confidence- it's absolute hubris.

Who approved this crap? Mart needs a few restrictions for crap like this. He is only trying to start flame wars and has no other reason to post in this section. Hey Mart is that your personal site? If not maybe you should be a staff of that site because you would get along great with them.

But here's my take...this article did not say the PS3 was a POS, which would have warranted the majority of ardent responses above.

It said, here are some mis-steps the Sony company could have done better with. The author is right. You can love the machine and not love the marketing. The lead-up to the release of the PS3was a debacle -almost all the major press agree.

I agree with every point he made -except for the spidey font, which I think is kind of cool. I don't really see how objectively you can even argue against the points he made.

By the way, I do own a 360, and I do not think the PS3 is a POS, I think it will probably end up being fantastic. It's just that right now the 360 is owning on all fronts,(This will probably change) and this frustrates all you Sony owners who were patiently drooling while I was rockin out to kick-ass games for the past 2 years already.

The attacks on the 360 with spiteful news is common amoung PS3 fans but when PS3 fans get bad news posts they are baffled about who would post such a thing!; like they have not been doing it consistantly its Ironic!.

You are the complete personification of what a 360 fanboy is. That means, that you are an extreme liar, an extrmem hater, and extremely jealous that you cannot afford the PS3. The 360 fanboys are in EVERY SINGLE PS3 news article ever since the conception of this website. They are the most vile and venemous fans of any console. The PS3 is here to stay, whether you like it or not. The PS3 is breaking records, its setting new standards, its leading the way of inovativeness, its helping in Science(Gene FOlding), the PSN in its infancy is already competing with XBL.

In response to teh comments below, I didnt mean to generalize and say ALL of the gamers for teh 360, but the sad truth is, that XBL is known to be a haven for total lack of respect for the pther gamers. It has a reputation of low class people getting on there and saying whateevr they want, and just making it not fun to play online. it might be a minority, but its giving the other 360 gamers a bad name.
Also, on this site, I stand by what i say, 360 fanboys are so much on the offensive towards PS3, that they spend more time degreading PS3, and less time supporting 360.

I've been saying for the last couple of years that the head honcho's at Sony deserve to be fired...

I love their hardware, but some of the things they said during the run-up to the PS3 launch, and all of the obvious opportunities they completely missed with the PSP makes me wonder if the Sony execs have any idea of what the customer wants.

The one quote that absolutely kills me to this day was when they were talking about the PSP being "The walkman of the 21'st century". They could have EASILY pulled this off, but failed miserably. Since firmware 2.0 for the PSP, they could have integrated it into the Sony Connect online music store. The PSP has built-in WiFi, 2.0 brought a browser to the mix, and think of how cool it would have been to be able to browse and download music with your PSP in ANY hotspot around the world! Instead, the consumer gets FLOODED with over-priced UMD movies...

And speaking of UMD, that MIGHT have had a chance as a portable movie format if there were any players OTHER than the PSP. They should have been putting out cheap portable UMD movie players, they should have put out UMD car stereo head units, but instead they try and rely on UMD movies to push the PSP... Well, you can see how successful that was...

I'm hoping that a lot of these stupid business decisions will cease with Kuratagi leaving Sony Computer Entertainment. He may have been the father of the Playstation, but he had NO IDEA how to run it as a business... He got lucky with the PS1 and PS2, but with the PSP and PS3 his inexperience shined through...

No one doubts that Sony miscalculated their launch but I'm tired of seeing these ridiculous 'analyses'. If you're going to rag on any console, at least have the decency to stick to useful analysis. The guy makes about three valid points (from a sales perspective) but then spends most of the article in what I assume is an attempt to get cheap laughs. The quality of gamer media is going to crap quick, no matter what console you're a fan of.

When you have so called 'contributors' posting this crap and I can't get 7 approvals (or whatever the number of approvals) for legit news/screens/info. This posting method is flawed! Except for the issue of the Font the writer got everything right.

Late release should have been in there too as it gave x360 a year head start without next gen competition and opportunity to build up its gmaes library and net service.

Like HD cables: Not included. Can you argue about that? It's a LET DOWN however you put it.

Even though you can buy HDMI cables seperate. MS for example put in the HD componont cable, which also can switch to composite/scart. Giving you the option to switch out of the box between HD or CRT signal. Sony at least could have included the same (not even HDMI) to give HD out of the box.

And well the other points.. ALL TRUE. Online would blast XBL away from the launch of the PS3. Which wasn't true. We'll still have to wait and see if the promisses of Sony with Home will be true.

Thus. I have no idea why you take an article, written by somebody else, also brought to you by Maxconsole, is something that those crying dudes that bought a BluRay player are reflecting on the person that post it here.

To the poster above: how many articles have I posted today? How much time did I spend here. You know, I play games but you won't know. Because you probably don't own the best next gen gaming system out there at this moment. My friends from N4G that are on my friendslist know that I game often and could confirm that. But I have totally for the rest no reason to prove it to you. The most funny thing is: my work for a part even involves games. I just think from the bottem of my hart that the PS3 ain't the best choice for gaming this gen. It is a cheap BluRay player though, have to admit that.

You know using any other things than Sony brands voids the warranty right? Sure you don't have to buy licensed Sony stuff for that?

Besides that, its not about that price. It's about the experience.

When you come home, and unpack the console out of the box, it should be that you could hook everything on and could get the HD experience right out of the box.

Like also the missing of the headset with the PS3. What's that about? How are you going to communicate online?

The price, while it is expensive the PS3 is worth more than 600 dollars. Could they have done without bluray? Maybe. If it was never introduced, i don't think we would of known any better.

Those are all good valid reasons but I would put more attention to #7. The 360s launch line up absolutly destroys the ps3s launch lineup. We are talking one of the best in history vs one of the worst in history. The ps3 has been out for 6 months and its best game is Oblivion (14 month old game for the 360) The first 6 months of the 360 and it already had ALOT of high rated games. The ps3 only has a handful. And what are the advantages of coming out an year early??? Bigger library of games. 2007 has a HUGE list of AAA titles coming out for the 360 while the ps3 talks about folding, home, lil big planet.

9 - Lack of force feedback (vibration) in the controller. It's being implemented back into a new controller
8 - Lack of HD cables. You can find them at Wal-mart or E-bay at a low cost, it is nice that the Elite comes packed with it.

3 - No "must have" games at launch. Both consoles lacked, but if comparing COD2 to RFOM, which one do you think is better? I agree that the Nintendo Wii came with the best launch/included games.
2 - Blu-Ray. Is the gamble going to pay off and should it have been included? Too broad to comment.
1 - Price. I agree it's a very expensive gaming console, but an inexpensive high definition movie player. Either way, I would love to see a price cut soon, which would make it affordable to the masses.

Oh as we're all doing it.

Would have been good to have them in there, but shouldn't an HDTV come with an HD cable, or shouldn't my printer come with a bloody USB cable to connect it to my computer...they didnt :( - anyway Amazon and nearly every other store in the UK are offering a free HD cable with the console (perhaps Sony told them....hmmm we made a mistake, can you say they'll get one for free)

4. I think underestimating the Wii should be put under price...ps3 price should be lower in order to counter the Wii.

10: The Spider-Man Font. Not really a big deal--c'mon, it's just a font, and a very recognizable one, at that--and besides, Sony produces the Spider-Man movies. A non-issue.

9. Rumble? Well, it may happen after all. I think more people will welcome it than not. A minor, but notable misstep.

8. No HD cables: Yes, this is a problem. They should have had component cables, at the very least, and since HDMI cables are pretty cheap to make, a few dollars more would have helped emphasize one of the PS3's strong points: HDMI support.

7. Underestimating the Wii: Hell, EVERYONE did! (MS, Sony, and pretty much the whole gaming industry). Nintendo's marketing and price point hit the market that Sony seems to have forgotten, and was once their bread-and-butter: Families and casual gamers. Never underestimate those demographs.

6. Putting down the customer. Indirectly, yes. "People will work more to buy our system." Attempting to justify your price point with a statement like that is NOT going to win you many fans. Foot in mouth disease seems to have struck many of Sony's higher-ups recently. However, I think they're eating a little crow and learning from it.

5. Two versions of the system: Well, now that the 360 has THREE, this is really a non-issue. However, I am still ASTOUNDED that they dropped the $499 SKU. That was a great way to bring both the gaming experience and Blu-Ray into people's lives, and the $100 difference isn't chump change; hell, it's an extra game or two or more accessories. Why drop it? This, to me, is a big misstep.

4. Online play: Coming along slowly. Too early to judge yet.

3. Lack of games: Yes, an issues right now, but in six months to a year, maybe not. However, if they keep hemorrhaging exclusives, they may not be able to tout many games over their competition.

2.Blu-Ray: Hard to tell, yet. The Trojan horse idea of integrating the technology into the PS3 is actually clever, but does it add to the price unnecessarily? And, as I've said many, many times, Average Jane and Joe don't know Blu-Ray from a blueberry. Great for some, especially if you have an HDTV, but since most households don't, perhaps Blu-Ray is extraneous. Still, I think this one is too early to call, as well.

1. Price. Talk to Average Jane and Joe about spending $600 for a gaming system. That's why the Wii has been a runaway success, and to a lesser extent, the 360. Sony became kings of the console world by offering systems with great games and family appeal at a reasonable price. The PS3 is currently priced out of their range, and that's hurting Sony. That, coupled with a lack of games, is the PS3's biggest obstacle to success. Address those two factors, and maybe things change.

10.microsoft could have come out with a true next gen system that moved the industry forward instead of releasing a system that is only an upgrade in graphics,but nothing else.no upgrade in chip design,no upgrade in controller design,no upgrade in system design.just off the shelf parts.releasing early didn't help microsoft at all here.

9.not supporting the launch with great next generation games.just upgraded graphics.king kong,tony hawk wasteland,kameo(n64 game),amped 3,perfect dark zero,etc.no innovative software.just graphics.shameful launch with no true gems except possibly call of duty 2.

8.not supporting japan enough.stating you are going to release games they will enjoy,but turn around and release the same lack of innovative software for a whole year without true rpgs and action titles they like and are accustomed to.which lead to abismal sales to this date in time.

7.not upgrading xbox live beyond xbox.360 still has the drop outs,the lag,the idiot gamers,the cheating,the hacking,the name calling and racism that doesn't speak well for the service.and having to pay for this type of service doesn't help matters.

why does it matter which system is the best or worst, if your a sony guy an prefer PS games then good for you, same goes for the xbox guys(like me) if you prefer xbox then good for you!! as long as the system of YOUR choice provides the gaming experience YOU want it shouldn't matter what ANYBODY else thinks!!

for me I prefer the 360, I rarely play my PS3, not because its not a good SYSTEM but because it just dont have the GAMES that I like right now!! but im still happy with it an happy to have it!!

i remember when people bought consoles because of the GAMES, and not because of arrogant comment from officials, or a movie font on the console it self.

it used to be, "hey, Super Mario Bros 3 is on the NES! i gotta get it!" or, "Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis looks amazing! what do you think?!"

yes, the console is $600. we get it. deal with it and move on. if you don't like it, there are cheaper alternatives (like a 360).

yes, Sony corporate is arrogant. ALL corporations are. it's their job to say that their product is the most fantastical and amazing thing since the invention of the universe. IT'S. THEIR. JOB. the fact that so many of you take these sentiments to heart saddens me.

sure, the PS3 doesn't come with HD cables. how awful. i found a 6ft HDMI cable for $8.99 on newegg.com. if i can shell out $650 for a PS3, then i think i can manage an additional $9 for a cable.

who cares about Blu Ray? apparently 3 million people, and i'm one of them. those are the current numbers of people who own PS3's and they know precisely what is in the box, or they wouldn't shell out $600, 425 pounds, etc for the box. if they didn't care about Blu Ray, they would have got a 360. whether you accept it or not, Blu Ray is being used for games, much like UMD. if you don't want it for movies, well, that's your perogative and right, but stop harping on it, and the people who DO want it because you don't. different strokes for different folks, and thankfully, this console generation illustrates that by having 3 entirely different consoles that cater to 3 entirely different markets is a GOOD thing, instead of last generation, when there really was no reason to own more than one console, as they all seemed to be fighting over the same piece of the market like a bunch of yapping, hungry dogs, what with the similar game library they all had (with the exception being a few exclusives, and in the PS2's case, a LOT of exclusives).

this is the first time in gaming history that there were legitimate reasons for owning each system.

if you want some fun family entertainment, as well as a console with a nice collection of games you and your friends can enjoy, get a Wii.

if you want well-integrated and executed online gameplay, go for an X Box 360.

if you want a multi-media machine that plays games, movies and HD movie discs, surfs the net, and is compatible with almost any USB enabled device, then the PS3 is for you.

"but i like ALL of those things!" then shut the hell up and get all three when you can, prioritizing with which of those three main characteristics suit you best.

personally, i love the multi-media hub, so i got a PS3 first. i'll probably get a 360 later this year, and the jury is still out on the Wii for me, as i owned a Gamecube, and i had, like, 4 games for it that i hardly played, same with my X Box.

the PS3 doesn't have many games right now besides a handful (which this article failed to mention anything outside of Resistance, which is a great game, even if it doesn't match Gears of War graphically).
instead of dwelling on the past, they should look at what's available on the system now, which are some good exclusives; Motorstorm, the aforementioned Resistance, and VF5, and there are some highly rated multi-platform titles, even if sometimes the 360 version may edge it out in some ways; like Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Oblivion, etc, and the future of the PS3 for this summer and fall is looking even brighter.

it seems like gamers everywhere have forgotten that there was time when the 360 DIDN'T have Gears of War, or Crackdown, or Dead Rising, or Oblivion. coincedentally enough, these games didn't show up until about 6 months to a year after the console's release.

what month are we into with the PS3? Month 6? of COURSE there aren't going to be 1,000,000 AAA titles on the market. we wouldn't be able to buy them all if there were.

starting in June, the PS3 is getting hit with a great exclusive: Ninja Gaiden Sigma. remake as it is, there are still a few MILLION PS2 owners that have never played this game, and i'm sure a few million of them now own PS3's. hell, I DID own Ninja Gaiden Black for my X Box, but i'm still picking up Sigma for my PS3. after playing the hell out of the demo, i'm convinced this remake is going to tide me over until the next big PS3 game hits in July: Lair.

i'm purposely ignoring multi-platform games, but there's a healthy smattering of those hitting both consoles this year, so those that own one or the other have plenty to choose from.

what people seem to forget is that not EVERYBODY owns a 360 AND a PS3. some of us only own one, and the fact that a game is coming to the one console we own is just as awesome as an exclusive.

again, us PS3 owners know what we bought, and if we didn't want what the PS3 was offering, we wouldn't have purchased it. yes, we know there are cheaper alternatives, but all 3 million of us still chose a PS3, for it's Blu Ray, as well as it's game playing functionalities. so it matters litte if a game is exclusive or multi-player. we're probably still going to buy it and play it on our PS3s, just like a sole X Box 360 owner will buy, say, Devil May Cry 4 on his 360.

as far as the PS3 being a multimedia machine, how cold you put the Ps3 over the 360!! all the PS3 has is Blu ray discs an thats it!! with the 360 I can use xbl market place to download tv shows, movies, arcade games, an game demos.the Ps3, game demos,arcade games, an movie TRAILERS!! if I decide to buy I also have the option of HD-DVD.then if I have a PC running windows media center, I can stream ALL of my movies onto my 360 an ALL of my music IN GAME, something else you CANT do with the PS3. so if anything its the 360 thats the multi media machine. now tell me i'm wrong!!

you do know that it requires you to have certain things.to get all the xbox live content,you need broadband and online.to get hd movies offline requires you to have to purchase the hd-dvd.and all movies aren't released on hd-dvd.to get all the content on your pc requires you to have a pc and media center capability and a network.

I have seen so many hatefull articles about ps3's launch. Seriously, when will this stop. Everybody freakin knows already that ps3's launch wasn't that good. some of the points are based on factual info whilst some quite misleading/irrelevent. most of the points are fairly well known to be highly divisive - causing fanboys to tear their hair out. anyway, my point is, this sort of stuff gets posted once a week (ten things this and that) - be it about the ps3 or the xbox360; whether it is actually "NEWS" for gamers is HIGHLY debatble i.e. this is not NEWS it's a flaming device.

NOW, even though i am incredible pleased with my ps3, i agree that Sony have made mistakes and indeed missteps (although some of the mistakes pointed out by the poster are rather pathetic/debatable i.e. font??!!!! wtf font??!!?!, hdmi cable, blu-ray - debatable since blu-ray for me was the unique selling pointetc). anyway, mistakes do happen but i expect them to be resolved and in most part i think sony have ate humble pie and listened to the gamer. good companies never rest on their laurels. a games company is only as good as it's last console. history tells us that heritage (sega, atari, commodore, sinclair, etc) counts for nothing and hence it's important that sony (or any other company) learns from its mistakes.

I love how people complain about the lack of hdmi cables for the ps3, but never say anything about the ps3/xbox360 not including a GAME out of the box. Both dont bother me, but its laughable how people arent bothered by the fact that they have to go spend 50 bucks on a game in addition to their new console, yet 15 bucks for a cable they may or may not need is 'absurd'

You sony folks sure are in an uproar. The things this article states are true. These are facts, not fan boy rantings. MS fan or sony fan how can you say these things are not true? Sure they are fixing some things but others are unexcusable and unforgivable since there are other gaming choices to be had. Sony thinks there crap don't stink and you all will love it regardless of the facts.

i don't know why everybody are talking bad things about a 6 mounth console...the war has just begun...and everyone knows that in 2008 when the big names come out (again....FF13, GT5, Tekken6, MGS4, GoW3, new Jak and Ratchet games) the ps3 will be a "must have" item...and may be 6 years later we will be reading that PS4 will never beat the PS, PS2 and the PS3 sales:P

by the way i'm very exiting to see how killzone2 looks like...and i think heavenly sword will do great this year...but Lair doesn't impress me at all...

ok first of all i am no sony fanboy. i enjoy gaming as a whole whether it be ps3, 360, wii or pc. second this guy is a fudging idiot. i am so ******* tired of hearing how expensive the ps3 is. ok ps3=$600 360=$400. ok now factor in that u have to PAY to play online for the 360. lets say for the next five years. at $50/year, that raises the 360 to $650. hmm now after 5 years the ps3?....$600. another thing im tired of hearing, is how good gears of war is compared to resistance. ok now lets look at some facts. gears of war - years in production/not a launch title....resistance - one year in production/launch title. not to mention that gears of war used a tweaked unreal engine, something that already existed so that saved some time. basically, i love games, no matter what console. so basically all fanboys can go **** themselves.

Not a bad list. Can't really care about the Spiderman font but still... it's a pretty simple thing to do. Anyway, don't think there are "just" 10 missteps but I hope Sony will learn from this with the launch of the PS4 in 2013.

I hate the PS3 having a Spiderman font. I look at it and I think "Wow, is this their vision for the greatest console of all time? Copy a movie font? They certainly took their time..." It's even worse now the movies coming out, 'cose I see the "3" and think "Oh look, it's a PS3 ad! No wait, it's just Spiderman 3". It's almost as if Sony care more about Spiderman than the PS3...

It's not exactly going to affect whether I buy the console or not, but I noticebly hate it.

By the way, I agree with pretty much everything the article said(surprise, surprise) especially about Blu-Ray. I don't watch movies much anymore, because I prefer games, so I don't see why I should spend an extra £125 for a Blu-Ray player. I'll wait for the price to come down.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
