Correct me if I'm wrong, but the PS3 has only been available worldwide for just over 2 years now. How they figure we're at the halfway point is beyond me. And Microsoft's last quarter didn't show a year on year increase. 360 sales had their worst quarter in two years.

XBox 360 is in 2nd because it had a year head start of Sony. That is the ONLY reason why.

A year head start is a very big advantage in the business world. I find it funny how all these analysts and fanboys seem to overlook that one important fact.

secondly,sony has yet to play their cards as they have stuck to their guns of $399 and pushed value.they may not be profiting a lot,but the quality is outstanding.and they are only selling 100 thousand systems less than microsoft's $199 entry priced 360 this year.also,sony is not even halfway,as both their ps1 and ps2 systems have sold for 10 and 9 1/2 years respectively.2 1/2 years for ps3 is not "half way" in 10 years of production.

thirdly,the only reason microsoft is profiting,is because of multiple buys from out of warranty 360s,or repairs of 360s that do not fall under the RROD warranty,making gamers pay to be able to play online with fellow gamers,making them pay through the nose for accessories like wifi adapters and over priced hard drives,and paying for things that wouldn't fit on a standard dvd disc with DLC.or buying failed disc players like HD-DVD(this one was easy money).

I'm an Xbox 360 owner who purchased his console the night of the original release. For the first time ever it crashed last night and i have to send it in for repairs. This article may well be true, but while the Xbox 360 has had some very impressive titles over the last year or so, the PS3 has also impressed me with more recent titles like Infamous, the majority of Xbox 360 exclusive games that I love and continue to play are well over a year old now.. Mass Effect, Gears of War 2, Fable 2. I'm waiting for sequals to sequals. As soon as blu-ray picks up and replaces DVD's everyone will be getting a PS3, i know i will... then look at how the sales charts look.

you are coming to you senses. Thank you for declining on becoming an botty boy. Botty boys are bad for this country! The PS3 is the only real choice for consoles! Look in this economy, free online is good. Built in wifi is good. Better exclusives are great! Nothing and I mean nothing on the crapbox (regardless of them sticking their chest out on multiplats that are inferior to ps3 exclusives) can even compare to Killzone 2 or Uncharted 2 - truth be spoken.

And i might add, my xbox 360 sounds like a 747 while its running and from my experience playing the PS3 at a friends house i can actually hear the PS3 games OVER the console noise. If Mass Effect, and Bioware developed for the PS3 I would have gotten one ages ago.

If we were to take this comparison then that is like 2 major companies releasing 2 similar cars.

1 is a price point car and the other is a top of the line model.

The Wii is still killing everything in sight, even after an overall sales drop in hardware, year over year. It's kind of a non-point saying that MS is winning, when the 360, like it's rival PS3, are both getting their @sses handed to them even with combined sales against the Wii!

A year over year increase for 360 sales isn't exactly great considering the 360 didn't have really great sales for the 1st half of 2008 to begin with. Any idiot with a brain could see, that 360 sales last year was stagnant until the 360 price drop in the later half of 2008. Considering how the 360, like the PS3 is so far behind the Wii, winning on the HD console front, doesn't exactly equate to being number 1 now, does it?

Take into consideration handheld sales and this constant argument about home console sales becomes laughable. Even the PSP has sold around Wii numbers, so the DS sales look even more unsightly and godly by comparison. If the 360 sales are so great, I'd like to see it reach PS2 numbers, than I'll be impressed!

Last time I checked, it's the exclusive content "X" console that defines that system being the winner, and why they're currently winning.

That just so happens to be the PlayStation 3.

Think about this:

Do you buy a system over the other, just because the other is cheaper has a higher fanbase.

Do you buy a system over the other, so that you're able to play and have exclusive content no where else.

It better be wining, anything else would be a big failure. Excluding the Wii for a second, the 360 is the only console that has reached the point in its life cycle to appeal to the mass market (specially with the price). RE5, CoD MW series, and for new buyers the already stablish library more than justifies shelling out $200, it is just a great deal. Now MS has good reason to keep its presence in the gaming industry and that is great because Sony without competition is not the best deal. Price cuts make the difference, is what improve 360 sales in 2008, and it will improve sales of the PS3 once it happens (whenevaer that is). Overall MS and Sony are doing all right and should keep improving on their success

I'm sorry that you've forgot to mention the fact that the PlayStation 3 system, on most recent Xbox 360 exclusives announced multiplatform, gains the exclusive content when the Xbox 360 is left out. That however, isn't my problem. Nor did I ever speak or mention anything to do with multiplatform software.

But rather first/second party exclusives.

Which again, last time I looked. Define the reason of purchasing a system, rather then looking at the price-tag alone. It's called a long-term investment mate, I suggest you look it up.

I also suggest you do some much needed research on what you're able to purchase right on the box, in comparison to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

I know people that buy many of them they are so cheap that they have 4 or more in their house or that they get them banned from live for being modded so have to buy another to get back online until that one is banned. I hope they didn't spend much money on this "analysis". It doesn't take much number crunching to see that the cheaper consoles are selling better than the more expensive one. The more expensive one has the games and features I want so it's the one I have. Add the price to the head start time and... presto... instant analysis.

Sure it is winning, but will it WIN? Probably not. Considering there is a 10year lifecycle for both consoles, we still arent even halfway through. I think xbox fans shudnt be celebrating just yet; but you gotta give it to microsoft for doing much better than last gen. At this point unit sales are pretty much even, meaning more dollars are spent on PS3, so it's really nothing more than a year head-start.

1. Reasonably Priced Skus, though some would say it's still the most expensive, after the fact, then retract when they see NPD or something.

2. Marketing is the name of the game. MS does very well in that department. (Hardware/Software)

3. Xbok Live. Best *Paid online service, offerings tones of options and DEMOS, Games and features.IMO

4. Brand name has been strengthened but still got a long way to go. We will see how strong it is after a Sony Price Cut.

5. Combine, 1 year head start + Bigger gaming library + cheapest standard price also helps.

The 360 is second place next to the wii. There is no such thing as an "HD" console. See last generation was the sixth with PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube. This current seventh generation is the Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3. Therefore in this current generation Wii is #1, 360 #2 and PS3 #3. You cannot ignore the wii and exclude it from sales comparisons just because it's destroying both HD consoles. If the 360 was selling huge or the PS3 would you exclude it to? Would there be such a thing as "HD" exclusive? Exactly, the term "HD" was made only to say MS is #1 when in fact it's in #2 and barely outselling the PS3.

All the consoles are suffering for sales, with the Wii still blowing everyone else away.

You want to know why the Xbox is the only console to have a year over year increase in sales from last year? It's got nothing to do with how well it's selling now, it's because it was selling like sh*t last year. This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.
