How Halo Changed Gaming

IndustryGamers writes:

"Halo: Combat Evolved was a seminal title in the history of video gaming. The title almost singlehandedly carried the original Xbox platform early on, helping to shape that platform as the FPS gamer's first choice, a trend that continues even today. The Halo franchise has also helped to emphasize the legitimacy of video gaming as a mass market entertainment source, with Halo 3 (at the time) claiming the title of biggest entertainment launch ever and $300 million worth of first week sales – this would later be surpassed by GTA IV's $500 million first week.

Halo would not have had the impact on the industry it did without the excellent design of Halo: Combat Evolved by Bungie. The game introduced several small innovations that have subtlety (and not so subtlety) changed the gaming landscape, affecting not just shooter titles but all games in general.

With the recent revelation of 343 Industries and the Halo anime along with the announcement of Bungie's intended departure from the franchise coming out around a decade after the game's first public reveal, we felt it was a good time to take a look at the way certain features in Halo changed gaming forever."

Being popular does not change the gaming industry.

a_squirrel6141d ago (Edited 6141d ago )

GTA changed a lot
Halflife changed a lot
BF 1942/2 changed a lot
Red faction changed a lot
Super Mario changed a lot
Super smash bros (:D) changed a lot
NFS changed a lot
Halo changed a lot
NHL changed a lot
MGS changed a lot
Resident Evil changed a lot
....

and they only have Halo...

Pandamobile6141d ago (Edited 6141d ago )

My point exactly. Halo is by far the least revolutionary game in your list. This article is pretty retarded in my opinion.

JonnyBadfinger6141d ago

No need to get butt hurt over it

Turn and face the music, you want a history defining game its Halo. dont know how its changed history or why its so well received by everyone but the Sony fanboys.

But the game has something that no other game does..... and nobody knows exactly what it is. thats why its history defining, just like KFCs original recipe.

ShabzS6141d ago

it basically showed that first person shooters can be done on consoles .... 8 years ago no one thought that shooters can be done on consoles ... but then halo came

halo 2 showed how online multiplayer can be done on consoles ... as for halo 3 .... well we see the live activity every week dont we

@Pandamobile: man you need to play halo 3 to get it... its one of the most unpredictable and crazy fun game i've played in a long time

Pandamobile6140d ago

I've actually played a lot of Halo 3. I'm just not a huge fan, but I guess your point makes sense (about paving the way for console shooters). I didn't really think of that.

GWAVE6140d ago (Edited 6140d ago )

"How Halo changed CONSOLE gaming" would be a better title.

Or perhaps "How Halo changed game advertising: a.k.a spend more money on the advertising campaign then you did on the development of the actual game"

The fans who take every opportunity to worship every aspect of the Halo series are JUST as silly as those "anti-Halo fanboys" they complain about.

RememberThe3576140d ago (Edited 6140d ago )

are the most influential franchises in how todays shooters play. Shooters now days play either like Halo or Call of Duty. That it one of the reasons Killzone 2 is such a breath of dark massively awesome air.

@Steven Colbert: I think the point is the Halo got people to notice them. It doesn't really matter how you innovate if no one knows about it. Halo brought those innovations to a wide audience.

TheColbertinator6140d ago (Edited 6140d ago )

Well Pandamobile has been a hardcore PC gamer for years so I'm not surprised he feels about Halo like that.Whatever Halo did,any PC shooter did years ago.

Halo is just like Mario,GTA,GT,The Sims,Madden, and Need for Speed,it made games more popular.

cemelc6140d ago (Edited 6140d ago )

Ok this sh!t has to stop now

Wtf did you make of:

Goldeneye
Perfect Dark

Those game changed the shooter on console, they were great games i'm tired of people forgetting those two games.

I think halo:CE is one of the best xbox game perfect in its implementation, but goldeneye and perfect dark were perfect way before halo time.

if you don't believe me wait for perfect dark in xbox live and you tell me if i'm wrong.

a_squirrel6140d ago (Edited 6140d ago )

@above post

Sorry, I was thinking off the top of my head, and yes, perfect dark I remember well, while GoldenEye i didn't like as much

nottice how I ended with a ....?

@remeberthe#of something
Last time I checked, the original Xbox wasn't a 'wide' audience, it was the ps2. (I have 2 xbox originals with 2 Halo 2s, 2 halo 1s, and 2 halo 3s (one of them being legendary edition)

Halo IS overhyped, personally, I had more fun with killzone 1 (it was overhyped to, but I never knew about the game till I played it), but the campaign sucked

Downtown boogey6140d ago (Edited 6140d ago )

that they are brought to the same gameplay situations you face on foot as well (so they usually make them easier) and THIS is something that's not conveyed by any other FPS's I've played. The vehicle sections feel forced and they're made specifically to deliver an equally challenging experience to what you've encountered before in the game.

EDIT:
And again, I gotta tell you that I only own a PS3. (PSN ID: Noobli if you're so inclined...)

Gun_Senshi6140d ago (Edited 6140d ago )

The only think Halo done to gaming industry is putting FPS in Mainstream only.

Funny that anyone that says Halo is medicore shooter etc is labeled Sony Fan.

I guess ALL PC GAMERS Using Windows as OS are Sony Fans!

FlamingBozo6140d ago

Either way the fact is that Halo has changed FPS.... Halo showed how smooth fps could be on a console.... controls alone have changed FPS, with Halo 2 they started the shield health system which makes sense in halo universe but ever since that almost every shooter uses the same system even if they are trying to realistic or not... so whether if you like the new get hit hide than go back into the action gameplay we have today blame people trying to be like halo.... Then of course the main thing that it has affected is multiplayer and coop. Most game still havent got close to just how perfectly balanced halo is.... and sadly Halo 2 is more online feature heavy then most games today... the truth is that it changed FPS, but that doesnt mean that goldeneye and perfect dark didnt either it just means halo started the next evolutionary step but if you dont like halo then you dont like it but if you stopped being so ignorant and actually open ur eyes ud see it has made a difference

RememberThe3576140d ago

Last time I checked, Halo:CE sold 6 million+, Halo 2 sold 8 million+ , and Halo 3 sold close to 10 million. That is a wide audience. Turn off your fanboy goggles.

IdleLeeSiuLung6140d ago (Edited 6140d ago )

Sales aside, Halo opened the doors for FPS on consoles and today FPS is among the largest game genre on consoles. Calling that contribution small is narrow minded.

Compare this to RTS, while we are still waiting for the same to happen to RTS on consoles.

raztad6140d ago (Edited 6140d ago )

It's funny, I remember when I found a game (on the mac) called Halo:CE, it seemed fun, the vehicle combat was fun as was the shooting, but then a WWII themed game called COD appeared. Halo was left unfinished and I never came back to it. COD was so much better and exciting to play, so much fun. I didnt stop playing COD until the final assault over the Berlin palace as a private in the Soviet army. I dont know about early console shooter (just a PC gamer not long time ago), but that Halo:CE gameplay didnt seem revolutionary in any way.

Elvfam5116140d ago

"it basically showed that first person shooters can be done on consoles .... 8 years ago no one thought that shooters can be done on consoles ... but then halo came"

i swear Halo:CE wasn't the first FPS to be done on consoles when there previous games that was done consoles such as MOH on the ps1

"The Halo franchise has also helped to emphasize the legitimacy of video gaming as a mass market entertainment source"

Sony selling 140mil PS2's didn't do that? Lol. Gaylo ain't change anything.

danthaman156140d ago

Like it or not, Halo had a major impact in the gaming industry. It was one of the first FPS's at the time that wasn't sh*t for that console generation.

cyborg69716140d ago

Goodeneye wants a word with you. I think that was the definitive fps on console.

topdawg1226140d ago (Edited 6140d ago )

Halo helped popularize online muli player, but not much other than that. Not revolutionary or anything, probably one of the most\overrated games fo sho and Gears is much better

IQUITN4G6141d ago

Here is again another Halo artical

You truly know when something is the best when it's forever mentioned

a_squirrel6140d ago

So if people keep mentioning how stupid you are....

ShabzS6141d ago

believe the hype folks ... i just finished halo 3 last night .... and i get it now ... why everyone wants to be a halo killer ... this coming from a guy who never got into the hype, halo 3 is an outstanding game ... and i called master cheif the green ranger last week ... halo 3 just proved me wrong its just replaced hl2 as my fav fps game till date ...

@Gun_Senshi

chill out, it's just his opinion, no need for random name calling...

We're in the Gamer Zone, not the Open Zone...

PotNoodle6140d ago (Edited 6140d ago )

I thought the Single player was very average, i had to be near enough forced to complete it.

Its its multiplayer where Halo 3 is great, i'm not a fan of it, but i can clearly see it is a really good multiplayer game.

Halo helped consoles become a serious platform for online gaming. Its a fantastic series, always thought the single player was overrated, but the multiplayer is great and does deserve the credit it gets in that department.

u got owned6140d ago (Edited 6140d ago )

@ Gun_Senshi

"we don't need another idiot spamming crap advertising medicore and generic shooter. You're such a failure to say HL2 > HL1? Epic FAIL "

You need to take a chill pill or go to the open zone, if you hate Halo so much, what are you doing here?

On topic,
Halo perfected FPS on consoles offline and online, not only that Halo is the reason why FPS are so popular on consoles.

topdawg1226140d ago

Halo 1 was the best of the 3 and was the best fps at the time it came out in terms of gameplay. The other 2 not so much. I also don't like the enemies which are lame and the repetitive level design was awful as well. A great franchise, but not revolutionary and a little overrated

whothedog6140d ago

whoa whoa whoa.... Halo 3 > HL2.... nooooo I don't think I would believe my own grandmother if she told me that. I would probably say, "Come on Granny, Get real!"

ShabzS6140d ago

well lets see i've played half life 2 about 7 times now .... 4 times on my pc when it came out and then 3 more times for the achievements and what not last year with orange box on my 360 ...

its not like i dont respect the game ... i love the game .... any fps i play will be compared with the heart, story, characters and feel of hl2 ...

but having said that ... and after playing halo 3 ... the bar for fun factor and intense action has just been raised... that game is unpredictable, challenging and MASSIVE.... and i mean MASSIVE ... the environments are fu*king huge and set pieces are done to a perfection

That's Microsoft's gaming division for you...kill off developers making new ip while trying to capitalize off some long lost glory that has no hope of ever being what it once was thanks to recent decision making favoring unrealistic profit goals and greed. What a joke.

Reaper22_201d ago

So much bitterness. Why be upset over something like this. Just don't buy it and stick with what you prefer.

Tacoboto201d ago

Complaining about Microsoft is the only thing people comment here for anymore.

This website is practically dead without it

Mmmkay201d ago

I remember when you guys constantly complained about Sony remaking and remastering games. Guess it is cool now. As usual.

thesoftware730201d ago

Give it rest medman..., take a deep breath and try to not sound so invested in something no one is forcing you to read, buy, or play.

"Console war"is over, Sony won, be happy.

medman196d ago (Edited 196d ago )

@thesoftware730
I'm invested in people losing their jobs and their livelihoods while Microsoft execs tout record profits for their gaming division. Not sure why you wouldn't be invested. Could be you one day. Good luck.

Travesty201d ago

So what’s their solution to having multiplayer? Wait until Halo 7?
That was one of the most memorable parts of Halo..

monkey602201d ago

I'm not sure spending the heavy investment in time to recreate the multiplayer here is the answer either though.
Remaking the campaigns is a great idea to bring the new players up to speed. But if the multiplayer is included in each it'll just fracture the player base of each release.
I think it might be better to turn these campaigns out quicker and have 1 multiplayer game to keep everyone in one place

Travesty201d ago

Maybe having an Halo Online and just release the Combat Evolve maps. And when Halo 2 releases have those maps release. I don’t know but I would like to play a newer version of Halo multiplayer. I know times have changed, and Fortnite is all younger kids really play. But back then it was Halo and you connecting 6 Xbox’s together lol.

jjb1981201d ago

I agree. I think that'll segment the playerbase and once 7 comes out, players might realize it sucks and go back to the older games. Especially if 7 is live-servixe, they'll be shooting themselves in the foot on the one good leg they have to stand on.

crazyCoconuts201d ago

Kinda surprised they didn't just port MCC.
Maybe more $ to by made with separate remasters

Inverno201d ago

Wouldn't have that problem if it were MCC being released. Gotta wait for 7 to be disappointed with MP all over again cause if they half baked Infinite what makes people think they won't half bake the next game? MP works in past HALO games not cause of nostalgia but because it's MP that isn't concerned with the endless service approach.

JEECE201d ago

There is so much cognitive dissonance over Infinite. People say they didn't like it because it was a live service. Yet if you look at what the criticisms of it were at the time it came out and when the playerbase started falling off, the primary issue people had was a lack of updates. In other words, it wasn't enough of a live service.

Which is really an encapsulation of the problem with multiplayer today. So many people think that they want to go back to the "good old days" of mid-2000s multiplayer (The first few Halos, Socom, the first few Battlefields, CS 1.6, etc), but in reality if a multiplayer game like that came out today, people would whine about the lack of content within a month of launch and go back to a live service with a grindy progression system.

isarai201d ago

Why not just port the MCC? 🤔 That was the easiest layup ever and you completely missed it

franwex201d ago

30% profit margins! People will pay $70+ for remakes!

Software_Lover201d ago

I thought the same thing, then I realized that they wouldn't include the remakes in that edition. We may get a different version of Halo MCC in the future with all of the remakes included. I just want them to include Halo 5 at some point for PC.

TheColbertinator201d ago

Can they remake Reach too with the multiplayer?

Knightofelemia201d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will port Reach over to Playstation I quite enjoyed that game. I played Halo 3 and it was not bad I have Halo 2 on the OG Xbox I just need some cables to hook up to my tv to play it.

The last pillar has fallen XD

Tedakin281d ago

I mean Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox in 2 weeks. It has a Playstation Studios logo on it. The first pillar has fallen.

lukasmain281d ago

LOL you think a live service game is a Playstation pillar? hahahahahaha

1Victor279d ago

The first pillar has fallen.
🤦🏿 Well the competitor’s house already got 2/3 pillars down and the 3rd one is rotted to the core about to fall any minute now bringing down the glass house of cards down FOREVER 🤣
THE WAR IS OVER DEAL WITH IT

Reaper22_279d ago

It doesnt matter. You can get playstation stuff on PC. That pillar fell a long time ago. And next gen it will continue to fall.

Tedakin281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

@lukasmain Their one successful live service game, and their most successful game in the last few years. Yeah I do.

lukasmain281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

It's not a pillar. Expect ALL live serviice games to come over. That includes that upcoming Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls as well at some point. But the PILLARS are the amazing single player games. The games they built their brand on. Helldivers LAUNCHED on PC. It's not a Playstation Pillar

FinalFantasyFanatic304d ago

I will probably pick up Silent Hill 1 right away if GOG gets it, I grabbed BOF4 as soon as it was released, haven't picked up Dino Crisis yet since I already bought it on PS.
