ps2 is not hurting ps3 by no means... the way the economy is now ps2 is the cheapest console by far. until ps3 price go down, ps2 is the way for gamers can't afford ps3 yet.

a smart move from Sony to continue to support the PS2. Because the majority of the customers searching to purchase a PS2 will buy it for the price. If the PS2 was non-existent from the market that section of buyers will opt for the next available cheap hardware, which would be the Xbox 360.

I really don't think ps2 sales are hurting ps3 sales. People know what they want. They aren't mistakingly going to buy a 9 year old really cheap console, mistakingly thinking it will offer the same experience as the ps3. If they want a ps3, they'll get a ps3. If they want a ps2, they'll get a ps2. What sony need to do is drop the price of the ps3

First of all the ps2 its whats keeping the worthless ps3 alive.

PS3 its a straight up looser any which way you want to slice it, in sales, loosing money per console and not profitable through its games, and coding for the BBQ grill its not going to make things easier for developers.

PS3 its the crums from the garbage cans and nothing more. An over-hyped black gorilla that does not satisfied the gaming market, nor its investors.

What kind of live its remaining on the productivity from a true failure of this generation? None.

Just looking at the big black grill every morning makes me sick, and wonder what are the chances that one day I wake up and trow it against the wall? The chances are slim, but if I have a few beers than the chances are extremely high, the problem its that I dont drink.

I cant remember the last time I used that massive black plastic coffin.

By the way the ps2 had the greatest failure rate of any console during its gen, and the 360 has surpassed the PS3 in quality since October 2008 (Jasper), now I wonder besides blu G@y what its worth getting the most horrifying console in history.

PS3 its dead, although the fandroids dont want to admit it, sales volumes and games attach rates speaks for themselves. Lets place the last 2 nails into the coffin and wish bad fortunes to sony Ideology of marketing, because they suck, probably not as bad as the fandroids, but they suck none the less.

They'll most likely eventually move forward to the PS3. It's really following the same footsteps and is also a reliable console with outstanding games, many of which are sequels to the favorite series seen on the PS2.

im pretty sure the second they stop supporting the ps2, ps3 sales will rise, think about it, its the only reason the 360 is selling as well as it is right now...THERE IS NO OTHER MS CONSOLE.So if ppl wanted to play ms games they had no xbox so go with the next best thing-the 360. so its inevitable that when there's only one sony console, if ppl want to play the latest and greatest, they will see the need to "upgrade" their system.

Sony continuing to support the PS2 is probably what's keeping a lot of core PS2 gamers that haven't upgraded to a 7th gen. console from buying a Xbox 360 to be honest.

If Sony cut off PS2 support like... right NOW the chance that even half of those gamers still playing on the PS2 flocking to the PS3 is slim, and that's why Sony should definantly support the PS2 until it just plain stops selling or until the PS3 is a whole lot cheaper.

And NO I don't think PS2 sales are hurting the PS3 because every PS2 that continues to be sold (and everyone that bought a PS2 period) is a possible future PS3 owner.

I agree mostly with your comment.

What must also be remembered, is that the ps2 is sold at a profit, while the ps3 is sold at a loss.
Thus, it is the ps2 profits which ironically enable the ps3 to be sold at a loss.

Sony would be silly to discontinue the ps2 while it is making profits, in favour of the ps3 which is losing money (or breaking even).

Seriously, no one is going into the store for a PS3 and walking out with a PS2. No one could possibly believe anyone does this. It works the same way with the Wii as well. No one is walking into a store, looking for all the PS3 offers and then going "Wait a minute! Cooking Mama! I gotta have me some of that!" They just aren't marketed at even remotely the same consumer group. Their not even similar products.
Now, I can see the PS2 and the Wii being in competition with each other, but the PS3 and either of those two? It's such a huge leap in logic it's not even funny.

There are ALOT of people who have no allegiance to any console, and quite frankly, may not know alot about gaming, and they in fact bought Wii's.

MOST gamers are not people like you, me, or the other's here on N4G....most are not well versed and knowledgeable and I notice alot of hardcore gamers tend to forget that.

walk into a place like walmart, walk up to the clerk and ask "hey, i heard there's a new madden, I need a new gamestation to play it on, any suggestions?"

then they walk over to the counter and the clerk show's him all 3 and they end up getting either the cheapest thing they see, or the one they know most about, or the one that's most advertised.

I'll agree that the extremely few people who walk into a store with a pre-determined idea to which console they buy are going to change all of a sudden... but then again most of those people are either fanboys or teenagers.

The PS3 is a high end product. It's always been, it was always marketed as such and it just isn't targeted it the uninformed, impulse shopper. Sony knows that. That's a space the PS2 still fills. The uniformed shopper that is just looking for a game console and nothing else is going to walk in, compare prices, see that one is almost twice the price as the others and walk out the door with the cheaper console. The informed gamer, the informed hi-def enthusiast does his research and knows what the PS3 brings to the table, and expects to pay more for it. And clearly consumers get it, as the PS3 is being adopted by consumers far faster than the 360 did, for example, despite it's higher price.

The notion that the PS2 is in competition with the PS3 just defies logic. The people buying a PS2 or Wii at this point were never going to be PS3 customers in the first place. They might become one later on down the line, but they're not now.

i also believe that when sony finally does drop support of the ps2 they will start putting ps2 games on the store for download this
this could influence a lot of ps2 owner's to upgrade if they havnt done so by now

That like saying that just because Uncharted2 is about to be released that Sony should pull Uncharted1 off the shelves. Money is Money and thats what this business is about. I have 2 PS3's and I just bought a spanking new Limited Edition White Singstar PS2 SKU last week for $99 bux from Sears.com

I bought it bcuz I wanted to play SOTC, GOW 1 and 2 and Ico which I bought off of Amazon. Except Ico, I cant find this effin game anywhere for a good price =(

Back on topic, If there is someone who is TRULY interested in buying a PS3, theres no chance in hell that a PS2 will do the trick. LOL

The PS2 still sells alot and it's probably popular in developing countries as well. It probably costs sony nothing to make them and the profit from PS2 helps lessen the blow for the PS3 losses. I think sony will eventually release backwards comparability or something and phase out the ps2. If sony is currently selling 100,000 ps2 a month in the US those could be potential ps3 sales. Who knows, we all have to wait and see. Beside remember what sony says PS2 owners today are the ps3 owners of tomorrow

Agree about PS2 having a huge market, so it doesnt make sense to drop it, but I want to add that you guys are exaggerating Sony losses because the PS3. Last time I hear Sony was losing 50$/PS3, could be less by now, but more important (and it seems nobody is aware) software revenue has been increasing year after year. Very probably PS3 division is in full black by those days.

I don't know what sony is loosing or claim to know; however if they are then all I'm saying is Ps2 is a great source of profit for them. Besides I think a lot of games still sell on PS2 even if they don't make the top 10 or 20.

they will only stop suppororting the ps2 when everyone loses interest in the ps2, right now there are still lots of people interested in it as not everone can afford 7th generation consoles (yes even the xbox360), owning a ps2 means you don't have to upgrade your tv either, ok i know you dont have to with hd consoles but by hell do you notice the difference when you do.
besides all them ps2 sales are helping sony stay a float i say long live the ps2, and when the time comes i hope they all make the right decision and jump to ps3 the best out the 3 7th gen consoles

The "10 year life cycle" enables people with less money but enjoy Sony games and platforms to have an entertainment system that will be supported for a very long time. Of course supporting the PS2 is taking away some PS3 sales.
Microsoft stopped supporting Xbox basically right away once 36o was out. This was a slap to any person who bought an Xbox a short time before the release of the 360 because Microsoft basically said "buy another one of our consoles or you're SOL". That tactic at the time was a necessary move to bolster 360 sales. Microsoft couldn't afford to try and compete with Sony at multiple levels. And to this point it has worked. 360 launched a year earlier and the sales for both systems have basically been identical. 360 has a years head start and they basically have a years of sales lead.
Had Sony dropped PS2, there would have been a lot of angry people. Its nice that Sony sticks to their word and continues to support PS2 but I think it is time for them to transition to PS3. Run a crazy promo that if you trade in your PS2 towards a PS3 you get $100 off. Software and DLC is where you make most of your money anyways.
I'm surprised that people who play a lot of games can't see how the continued support of PS2 takes away from PS3 sales. Its obvious, you have a ton (140 million plus) of people that have probably the greatest platform of all time and they are still getting games.

No PS2 is good strategy.
They have more and more people with sony product in hand, that will eventually move to PS3.
Also the big picture is not about PS3 it is about the whole playstation. The PS3 console worth more than 400$, but with the PS2 they are probably making money $$$$, money they put on the PS3 to balance their budget.
