No Need for Wii HD?

WiiLand - "The sad truth is that Microsoft and Sony might have jumped the gun in their mad console arms race by forcing the introduction of HD gaming before its time. Nintendo had different plans for the Wii. They correctly predicted that not enough households were going to have HDTV in the coming years... and is now the definitive market leader... all without HD."

Menchi6155d ago

It's also the system with the weakest library by far.

I own a Wii, but I absolutely abhor the attitude that Wii fans take, that due it being top in sales, it's somehow the best console.

Unfortunately, that's simply untrue. The PS2 and PS1 both had the library to back up their sales, the Wii, to be quite blunt, does not.

tinman_licks6155d ago (Edited 6155d ago )

But like the article says few households have HDTVs so what's the point of having HD consoles when the games are being played on SD sets. Waste of money that drives up prices that consumers have to eat (i.e./ Blu-ray drive in PS3 = $600 at launch). Wii was so affordable at launch. Nintendo shows off their brilliance once again.

SpoonyRedMage6155d ago (Edited 6155d ago )

Yer no, the Wii has the weakest library and I'll admit that(but it does have a lot of good games) and part of the weak library is due to the fact that the Wii isn't comparable in processing power as the 360 and PS3 so it can't share the titles as the PS3 and 360 do.

That's how I think of it anyway, the Wii has a lot of great exclusives(I'd say comparable to the HD consoles) but when you take into account multiplatform titles it quickly falls behind.

qface646155d ago

that's not really true if you actually look it at it its really the ps3 and 360 fans that care about sales so much

anyways that depends on your taste i happen to want more games on the wii than games on the 360 and ps3
almost all 3rd party games though

i would buy me a wii hd just so i can keep having em sll

snaz276154d ago (Edited 6154d ago )

im not being funny i dont know many people that dont have hdtvs, they are so cheap now! go to any shop that sells tvs and how many sdtvs do you see? practically none! you can get a hdtv for £200 maybe less, the thing is technology will always move on and it will always leave some poeple behind untill the price comes down, look at VHS, DVD comes along and the players were like £400 quid! how many people had them within the first year? not that many, but then the price goes down and more and more people adopt the new format... so would someone say its bad that they brought out DVDS cos not everyone could afford it? course not! now its the standrad... now blu-ray is here and just like DVD in its day is expensive, but prices will come down and people will adopt, same with hdtvs, its like when colour tvs were invented... this process is just evolution in technology and is very welcome to me! i like things that improve, imagine if noone improved anything! wed still be living in caves like osama bin laden lol.

snaz276154d ago

i think its focused at a completly different market than the ps3 and xbox360, i think its really for kids, and thats fine kids should be able to game too why not, im 28 tho and have been gaming a long old time now, i have no interest in having a wii, but ofcourse there are lots of people that do want them, like ive mentioned kids, and casual gamers, maybe even people that have never played a computer game before, and this is a good thing... but a percentage of those gamers, will want to upgrade eventually and go for a more hardcore experience.

Maddens Raiders6154d ago

uhhh..no. Thank you Sony and Microsoft for "jumping the gun" 0_o

FamilyGuy6154d ago

I had my HD TV when the 360 came out and i was still playing my PS2. The 360 and PS3 WERE looking to the future in a sense of how long they planned on being on the market so of course they went HD as it seemed obvious that it would catch on immensely in the next 5 years.

The wii is doing well because it's people friendly, casual, not because it's SD and most people still have SD sets. Most people that havn't bought an HD TV plan on buying one when they ready or can afford to.

Genesis56153d ago

Jump the gun with HD? Have you to a place where they sell TV's lately you can't even by a SD TV anywhere. The SD TV era is over time to move on people.

Kushan6153d ago

Back in my day, we didn't care so much about fancy visuals, it was the gameplay that sold a game. Based on that logic, HDTV or SDTV, the 360 and PS3 still have the Wii beat hands down.

N4g_null6153d ago

What is funny is most HDtvs do not out put HD very well any thing under 1,000 is almost always going to be a joke at both HD and SD.

About the Wii library that is your pref. It is not that weak. Many people would say the same about HD consoles.

What is funny is you guess always assume other people can afford what you save up to buy. What is sad is they can't other wise I'm sure more people would have gotten HD consoles, maybe.

It is weird but it is almost as if HD gamers want the Wii to join the misery? HD gaming right now is not really a great idea. If it was then Why is PC gaming actually crumbling right now? It doesn't even need an HD tv.

I'm a PC gamer and I've worked on sd and HD console games but what is funny is you will find more people that don't even like the games they make. Then you will find the guys that only like the games they've made.... which is weird, they are not even fans of any other games.

I guess the question is if their is a wii HD does all of the games have to be HD can they not be SD just with great effects?

asdr3wsfas6153d ago (Edited 6153d ago )

The majority of the big Xbox360 and PS3 games are available on PC with better graphics and controls and in the case of the 360 free multiplayer, so you can still play most HD console blockbusters in better quality with only a gaming PC. In addition gaming PCs get access to a large number of games unreleased on any console (Dawn of War 2, Crysis, Battlefield, Command and Conquer 4, Neverwinter Nights, Quake Wars, Civ IV, any MMORPG, etcetcetc...) You don't get access to that many new games buying a HD console if you have a gaming computer. Even those PC games released for HD consoles have better graphics, controls, multiplayer (free) and user mods if run on PC.

The big difference is that you can't find a single title with comparable gameplay to some wii games on any other platform. There are no tennis sims close to EA Grand Slam Tennis or Virtua Tennis 2009 with wiimotion plus. There is no golf game comparable to Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 with wiimotion plus. There is no swordfighting game like the one included in wii sports resort (I've been playing it all day). Let alone archery, bowling, table tennis, or basketball. All of these titles do amazing jobs of simulating the actual play of the sports they're based on, at least compared to any effort expended thus far. You can't play games like these on any other system.

Without a wii you lose the majority of rail shooters released for this generation as well as every Nintendo exclusive. Rail shooters are a matter of taste but Nintendo exclusives are nearly all AAA quality. You can't find them anywhere else and there are a substantial number of them.

It really doesn't matter what has the weakest library if you have a PC. All of a sudden you have access to most of the blockbuster games of the HD consoles and more PC exclusives, all with better graphics, controls, add-ons and multiplayer than their console counterparts. But despite the PCs advantage in these areas neither it nor those HD consoles can approach the unique gameplay of some wii titles.

Some of us think it's worth losing out on the tiny handful of HD console AAA exclusives - none of which are particularly unique or even competitive with similar PC titles - to enjoy an tennis or golf game that makes it feel like you're actually playing.

Yes we do, it opens doors for new ideas.

I like the idea of a Wii HD, not for the visuals but what Nintendo would do with their franchise.

Same as when i played SoTC i wondered what team ICO could do on the Ps3 if they ever make a SoTC2.

Its just that Nintendo and many other developers can pull off amazing stuff with such specs, then the creativity will really explode with more processing power. Although its not a must, but yes it would be nice.

N4g_null6153d ago

If HD gaming proved any thing is that power does not equal great games. I think we should give nintendo some time for this. The gaming industry and it's 3rd parties where not ready it seems. I can not find hardly any game that I'm truly impressed with on the market right now because it is running on a more powerful system. I'll admit it maybe a little harder to impress me these days though since I'm pretty use to realistic modeling and texturing.

One of the few things that interest me about nintendo is this silent march to VR. Then there are the ideas of doing so much with so little.

There needs to be more work done on making the game play now. We are running out of excuses to make bad games now. Production is also becoming to movie like also.

SinnedNogara6153d ago

I would like it if it was a new console, but if it is a Wii with HD graphics, I would be skeptical. I don't really want to hash in more money for a HD-upgraded system, and I won't be able to transfer data to the new system (no harddrive in the Wii). I want to see what they would do with it before I buy it.

Or I can just wait for a new console. I like good graphics in games, but I want the Wii to push it's limits before we see a Wii HD.

badz1496153d ago

Wii is selling even hotter than hotcakes! anybody believing that Nintendo is going to release Wii HD anytime soon, doesn't really know business! why would they release a new console when the Wii is kicking a$$es in term of sales and profiting for every console sold? Wii HD is unnecessary! even without HD, the Wii is already in the league of its own because the experience is unique. what happen between the PS3 and 360 doesn't even hinder anything for the Wii, plus Wii HD is a rant from HD gamer, most Wii owners don't really care!

ChickeyCantor6153d ago

I didnt say more porocess power is the way to go.
Just saying that developers and designers can really go wild.

Eventhough limited hardware brings many unique designs, but knowing Nintendo for their work, they could do amazing stuff =).

"Wii HD" (Patcher is in trouble) Is going to cost 499$ when its released than I say no thanks.

And the author is right; Not having HD hasn't hindered the Wii from whoopin both HD twins on the sales charts. Quality and all that is 100% subjective.

Nintendo didn't rely on the gimmick of eye candy..they relied on the 'gimmick' of innovation.

My question would be, where do Sony and M$ go from here? They already have HD..whats next? Super HD? I wonder what the dev costs to make games for those systems would be. Maybe enough to sink 5 factor 5's.

swingingape6154d ago

I'll definitely NOT buy one if Wii HD costs $500. The whole point of Wii was being affordable and kinda of an impulse buy.

ChickeyCantor6154d ago

They will never go for 500, at least thats what they claim.
They always want it to be affordable, so i wouldn't be surprised honestly if their next console is 250/

snaz276154d ago

and they miss the point that the will is in a race all by itself, its not it competition with the ps3, or the 360, i mean do you think a hardcore gamer would only have the wii? seriously? i would say maybe some would have a wii for abit of fun, but also have a ps3 or 360 for their more serious gaming needs, so how has the wii taken sales from either hd console? the wii has hit the right note and no doubt nintendo have tapped into a previously untappable market, ie the non gamers. this should be commended ofcourse but its not to say they have beaten the hd consoles, they more side swerved them and gone into a completely different race, i think it would be interesting if another company made a similar rival to the wii, but even then i believe the wii would still beat it cos the majority of people that buy the wii just arent THAT interested in gaming, also i feel that nintendos next wii wont do so well because i dont believe the wii owners need nor want an upgrade, like hardcore 360 and ps3 owners do......

snaz276154d ago

..... for instance if the ps4 came out tomorrow id want one! bad! even tho the ps3 is awesome anyway, id still want something better, id still want the NEW toy, i have a 42" plasma tv, but i still want a bigger and better LED, im that kinda consumer, then you get people that are more than happy with their sdtv, and will only upgrade when that dies, these are like the wii owners, they have the wii for a party type machine, or got one for the kids etc, and that works just fine... so if a new one releases you think they are gonna rush out and get a new one that has upgraded graphics? or a better wiimote? i doubt it very much... and i think nintendo know this... i doubt they will bring out a new wii for a long time... i reckon they will instead keep inventing new periferals, such as the wii fit etc, instead of a new console... which to be honest for them is the smart move.

N4g_null6153d ago

snaz27 if you need some thing to push your tv and make you upgrade then there are PC set up that will push that set up just fine. It will have anti aliasing also. Plus the online is always better. Your PS4 is out there waiting on you right now. In fact it is maybe 3 years old. You see you are not the consumer you think you are.

I have a Quad core with 8 gigs of ram and a really good video card. All siting right beside my wii. The PC has one problem though. It does not have the games or the controller. That may not mean much to you but I'd like to wager you are not really that much of a traditional gamer AKA a hardcore gamer. I'm not putting you down but maybe you are not the type of gamer that would have bought super contra on the snes or the doom port on a console. You would have gotten it on PC then or better yet wing commander.

The only difference would be you now have to figure out what system to buy your ports on? I don't see alot of people complaining about not getting ports. Another thing is the only people complaining are the HD gamers.

Why does the Wii have to have HD? On top of this what if the so called casual gamers bought the Wii at 300-400 dollar anyway just because they loved the Wii over at their friends house? You know the Wii has games that cost way more than $80 on it and those games out sell one of the HD systems. These same people pay a lot of money for PCs.

So who knows.... Yet the casual gamers are a mix of hardcore , old school gamers and new comers. Even some HD gamers. Seriously stop acting like there are no gamers here.

winlonghorn6153d ago

There is no need to keep simply increasing resolution when you can make the player feel like they could "literally" jump right through the monitor. Trust me, stereo 3D is no longer the "gimic" that it was at one time. It is incredible! I know, I have Nvidia 3D Vision and I go to RealD 3D movies all of the time. :)

snaz276153d ago

ok well first off as ive said before im 28 years old, ive been gaming right up from the spectrum era, you think in all that time ive not gamed on a pc? you assume i want a pc for gaming, however you couldnt be more wrong.. i like laying on my coach and playing the awesome games on the ps3, or just navigating the net with the ps3 controller... i dont wanna game with a mouse and keyboard, i dont wanna have to worry about bugs and internet security, and all the other problem associated with pcs, and it seems by your own admission that i am in the majority, as you say pc gaming is crumbling... also if i was a pc gamer (and this is to oobob too) how would i play uncharted 1 and 2? god of war 3? GT5? resistance 1 and 2? LBP? metal gear solid 4? demon souls? white knight chronicles? to name a few! you see i am a hardcore gamer and i am the type of person that wants to keep upto date with technology, however i also wanna buy something that suits me, and pcs certainly dont, if they did dont you think id have.....

snaz276153d ago (Edited 6153d ago )

.... one by now? also how are hd gamers complaining exactly? complaining about what? lmao... i love the ps3, it does everything i need and more, i can surf the net, i can download films for free, i can download music for free, i can play all the kickass games produced by sonys 1st party and all the multiplats (even if i have to take a slight, and i stress slight downgrade in graphics compared to a very expensive pc), i can watch blu-ray movies, i can store all my photos, i can attach a printer and print out those photos... so tell me again exactly why do i need a pc? thats maybe where you will find the answer as to why pc gaming is crumbling.
edit: also pc online is always better? really?.. i turn on my ps3, it tells me whos online, who comes online, i can message em staright away, play with em straight away, for me that experience is much much better than what the pc offers me, and its all so easy on the ps3, just pop the disc in and off you go.

ChickeyCantor6153d ago

snaz,
If thats true, then there is no reason for people to troll the sections right?

snaz276153d ago

sorry but yo have lost me abit there pal... are you insinuating that im "trolling the sections"? because if you have a little look at where the contributor has posted this article, you will see it is indeed in the PS3 section also, so please explain how im "trolling the sections"? infact you will never see me on either a wii only or an xbox360 only article, as i have the filter set for ps3 news... ok? i wanted to comment in this thread mainly cos of the rediculous notion that hd isnt needed or wanted, for me i want it and now i have it, could not do without it, and while i was here happened to see some of the comments claiming some kind of victory for the wii lmao, well when your the only one running your bound to win no? anyway look one day you will grow up and want a grown up console dont worry, keep saving your paper round money and you will be able to afford one too.

ChickeyCantor6153d ago (Edited 6153d ago )

" sorry but yo have lost me abit there pal... are you insinuating that im "trolling the sections"?"

No i wasn't i was talking in general, Trolling goes in any section, Period.
And please keep your arrogant BS to yourself, i own a PS3.
How about you grow up, you ignorant twat.

snaz276153d ago

so why did you aim your comment at me if you were talking in general? really you should make yourself clearer when you comment, if your on about trolling and use my name obviously im gonna take it that your talking about me! and wow your mum was generous then! dont mums normally get their kids the cheap console (360)? lol

ChickeyCantor6153d ago (Edited 6153d ago )

Its a QUESTION, yes it was towards you, i asked you.
So in order to ask a question about stuff in general i should just talk to a wall? Cause you obviously feel offended.

And you actually keep going with insulting for no good reason,
You sir are a real twat.

asdr3wsfas6153d ago (Edited 6153d ago )

"i can play all the kickass games produced by sonys 1st party and all the multiplats (even if i have to take a slight, and i stress slight downgrade in graphics compared to a very expensive pc)"

The resolution you get on PC in games like Oblivion is better than 1080p, where as Oblivion on PS3 is natively rendered in 720p. Most (I believe all but I'm hedging my bets) blockbuster PS3 games are rendered in 720p, which I was playing in last generation. On top of that PC gives you 8x anti-aliasing, 16x antiscopic filtering. All with a better framerate. If you get a western digital raptor and gaming ram the load times will also kill any console.

The downgrade is anything but slight. If you count *only* the increased number of pixels the difference between PCs and HD consoles is similar to the difference between HD consoles and the wii. Which this thread has shown apparently really bothers you guys. I prefer gameplay over graphics and will turn down my settings to keep my frame rate up. But if you're going to rag on the wii's graphics then there's no reason to leave PCs out of the comparison.

"also pc online is always better? really?.. i turn on my ps3, it tells me whos online, who comes online, i can message em staright away, play with em straight away, for me that experience is much much better than what the pc offers me, and its all so easy on the ps3, just pop the disc in and off you go."

We call this "instant messaging." Included in "matchmaking programs."

You can plug game controllers into cpus. I have DDR and console emulators I do this for. My computer is hooked up to my hdtv with secondary output my LCD projector, as well as my monitor. So you can surf the net any way you want on the couch with one and play all those nice games on the big screen.

Bugs and internet security? It's easy to combat but I won't argue a preference like this. If you don't wanna do that work I can understand, but it takes like an hour to install what you need to prevent these problems.

You can talk about console exclusives all you want, but PC has similar exclusives and the benefit of running ported games with much better graphics and controls.

yeah better sepcs mean better graphics. but i dont really care for graphic. for me to actually buy it all depend on the gameplay and qualites of the game. well most 3rd party games dont really interest me at all

Its hard for me to play games not in HD lol....sad truth =/

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai38d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.
