Alan Wake team may continue elongated dev times

Alan Wake developer Remedy Entertainment is unfazed by criticisms of long development times, and has hinted that it will take just as long on its next project if necessary.

Remedy has in recent times been subjected to criticisms for taking noticeably prolonged amounts of time developing its most recent title, Alan Wake.

Yet Oskari Häkkinen, Remedy's head of franchise development, told develop in an interview published today that the prolonged dev cycles can often be a necessary procedure to ensure quality.

This is excellent, i'd rather them focus on quality of games not quantity.

Syronicus6166d ago (Edited 6166d ago )

If not then they can take their time but so can I when pinching a loaf. Sorry, but even some devs take their time polishing turds and get nowhere. Not to say that any game from the Alan Wake team is a turd but you get my point. Heck, the Haze team spent way too long on that turd so hopefully in this case their efforts are represented by a great game here.

Edit: So to the person(s) that disagree... You feel it is ok that developer takes years to produce a game that winds up being a turd? Odd, I thought that games, no matter the time spent should be good when I play them. I can't seem to understand the logic behind somebody that would accept a game in development for years only to be released and suck... Either that or you missed my point entirely and just got defensive thinking I was saying that Alan Wake was a turd. no, Alan Wake is not going to be a turd but when some devs take too long on a game and that game turns out to be another Haze, you have to admit that it sucks. Silly N4G'ers...

kewlkat0076166d ago

A "turd" is a "turd" regardless of how good the game looks.

You just don't have to buy or wait for the next game...obviously if you are disappointed.

If it took 1 year and turned out to be a "turd" we would say, they rushed it. If it's still a "turd" after 3-4 years there will be something else said....

coolirisGB6166d ago

He tried his hardest not to sound like he was flat out bashing this game you have to give him a D for effort.

rockleex6166d ago

Nah, just kidding. Heavy Rain's taking quite long too.

Hopefully both turn out to be awesome. I'm in need of some story/character driven games.

PrimordialSoupBase6166d ago

People too often forget how small their dev team is in comparison to the scope of their projects.

FamilyGuy6166d ago (Edited 6166d ago )

I don't think they should take as long, didn't they build an engine for this game? Unless they plan on building an all new engine for their next game I think the turnaround should be much faster.

Quality over quantity is fine but once you have all the tools laid out and ready for use your projects shouldn't take as long as when they weren't.

long as Remedy makes good titles i dont care how long they take....

NewZealander6166d ago

but apart from max payne what else has remedy made thats any good?

alan wake is starting to look outdated, its like too human all over again.

im over the years of waiting for this game, at best it looks like an alone in the dark clone.

Blackfrican6166d ago

Why make great games, that take more than a year to make. Clearly it would be more profitable to release Alan Wake 10, Alan Wake 2k10, Call of Alan Wake: Flashlight Warfare, ..., Alan Wake Guitar Hero. Include a flashlight in your special edition and set the price at $150.00. Just don't forget to increase the shine on the helmets, add at least one new perk, and use the words "innovative", and "new" when referring to your recycled game.

SuperStrokey11236166d ago

Maybe while they are extending their dev time they could actually make a game that doesnt look terrible?

Sangria6166d ago

My only problem with Alan Wake is that i was waiting for a story like Max Payne but it actually is a zombie shooter (zombie, infected, it's the same thing, just like aliens and infected in Resistance).

I wished so much it could be a film noir game. I'll probably still buy it but wont have the same enjoyment with photophobic zombies. I'm not anymore excited as i can be for Mass Effect 2, for example. They can take 10 years to release it, it wont be a problem for me.

i_am_interested6166d ago

i would actually like to see more devs do this in order to see more polished games, but there has to be some kind of compromise here in terms of announce and release, both killzone 2 and alan wake were shown in 2005 and both have a span of over 4 years from official announcement to release

with god of war 3, it was first shown in june 2008 at e3 with a target render and is coming out in march 2010, although im sure theyve been working on it since way before june 2008, the window of official announcement and release is going to be under 2 years which i think is pretty good for a game being developed from the ground up on a new engine

A Late Look: Alan Wake

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "All in all, it’s not hard to see why Alan Wake has received a bit of a cult following (there’s that famous foreshadowing again). It’s a title that blends themes and gameplay, while pushing the limits of storytelling by putting stories within stories and letting you read those stories before you get to that part in… the story. It has flaws, to be sure - the gameplay side can’t quite keep up with the rest of its ambitions - but overall it’s a great game that stands out among its peers and is undeniably… one for the books."

Kind of a goody story...

On a serious note, that is why I try activating gift cards asap. It's happened to me where the store didnt scan it right where the card was unusuable. Happened at Wally World.

gigoran8787d ago

wait, that place is real? national lampoon wasn't kidding?

jznrpg199d ago

People sometimes call Wal-Mart Wally World including myself

Tacoboto786d ago

I just bought two of the MonsterVerse Godzilla movies on 4K - both had digital copies expiring in 2023. Both were actually expired.

I'd be surprised but it's WB, of course they'd actually expire them

Knightofelemia787d ago

Usually most of those redemption card have an expiry date on them. If they expired all buyer did was buy recycled paper. And some of those codes are country locked to certain countries. I buy a card from the States I can't use it in Canada.

Chocoburger787d ago

Dumb and silly story. She wasted her money for no reason.

Is it really that hard to go to Steam or GOG. She spent $240, when its currently 70% off on GOG, and only costs $4.49.

Gee, I wonder, should I spend $240 on eBay, or $4.49 on GOG? 🙄

Rynxie786d ago

Most likely she wanted to resell a few or most of them. However, it was a too good to be true situation.

Profchaos786d ago

So in short she paid $240.00 assuming usd for a bunch on unactivated game codes.

I still don't understand why I guess cause there's not a physical version and she wanted something for a collection or art project.

Rynxie786d ago

No, most likely to resell. However, she ended up getting screwed.

Asplundh786d ago

This is Alan Wake 1, it had physical copies.
