Xbox Division Records Second Profitable Year in a Row

Teamxbox writes: Even if the Entertainment & Devices Division (which includes the Xbox, Zune, Windows-based PC and online games and services, Mediaroom and the Surface computing platform) saw its revenues down in the fourth quarter, the division recorded its second straight year of profitability and mostly thanks to the Xbox business.

If Darkrider66 flamebait and clearly false article is on the main page, then i don't see why this one that shows the truth about the xbox division should not be approved.

Look forward to his article "Playstation Division Records Second Profitable Year in a Row"...unfortunately I've got a feeling we won't be seeing that one though.

I'm looking forward to that too.

Gaming Companies make most of their money in the holiday months. Every company is slow in the summer. Also, financial crisis may have something to do with the YoY-drop in sales. We'll have to wait for Sonys/Nintendos reports to see how well/bad Microsoft is doing.

green6148d ago (Edited 6148d ago )

"Last year, Microsoft's entertainment and devices division--the business segment containing the company's Xbox 360 and Zune product lines--posted its first-ever operating profit for a full fiscal year. The division made it two in a row today, but only after a lackluster performance for the fourth quarter, as detailed in Microsoft fiscal year-end earnings report." http://uk.gamespot.com/news...

"Whilst the overall picture for Microsoft is yet again one of declining revenues and income, its Entertainment & Devices Division – which houses its Xbox operations – has reported its second year of profitability, validating the huge outlays the tech firm invested into its long term games strategy.

So even if their revenue decreased by 3% http://www.gamesindustry.bi... they still made a profit firmly keeping their Entertainment $ Devices division in the black. And in this current economic climate, being in the black is good news.

So if you don't mind, can you stop reporting the article.Because last time i checked, teamxbox is part of the IGN network and is far more credible than darkrider66 blog.

EDIT:And according to darkriders blog, the 360 sold 100,000 less during the same period compared to last year. But what they fail to report is that GTA4 was released last April, remember GTA4....the biggest videogame launch of all time.Microsoft flooded retail channels with 360's but the launch of GTA4 had zero effect on hardware numbers on the 360.In fact, the 360 sold less than the previous month. http://vgsales.wikia.com/wi... SO dont you think it will have an effect on shipped numbers?

But as the SDF and you in particular are always quick to point out.Shipped is not equal to sales, and as can be seen by actual sales figures released the year via GFK and NPD, the 360 has sold more, and is up year-on-year.Fastest selling this year in the UK http://www.destructoid.com/... and up 280,000 in sales in the US http://www.examiner.com/exa...

"These last figures explain why the Xbox saw its second straight year of profitability and even if the Entertainment and Devices posted an operating loss of $130 million in the fourth quarter, it ended fiscal year 2009 with an operating income of $169 million."

So am I right when I say Xbox 360 posted a 169$ million profit for there Entertainment division last fiscal year, and this is Xbox 360's second profitable year, Green? :)

Good results for MS especially considering the economic climate. It is hilarious seeing the meltdowns of some posters *cough* power of flops *cough*

Sales, AAA games or the amazing XBL service.

JD_Shadow6148d ago (Edited 6148d ago )

Like I said, green (that got deleted for some reason), the only one that has a different take on the information, that even Microsoft admitted to, is Team XBox (which being a part of IGN just compounds the problem since IGN hasn't been that reliable lately, either), which isn't exactly a reliable source.

This is nothing more than flamebait.

And by the way, me and ulti are different people. Not sure why you would think that.

EDIT: By the way, I'm don't really care if they DID or not. If they did, good for them. If not, then that should say something. Either way, though, it seems stupid that we're fighting over these numbers yet AGAIN! I personally believe the first story more because there are other stories that support THAT, but who am I to deny you the right to only hear what you want to hear.

Not sure why we care so much about this that we have to get into a flaming match over this, but, then again, this is what N4G has become.

EDIT@Bitter Tears: Yeah, I would be crying too if I had to watch people implode over this instead of playing games.

And these people call themselves gamers.

97gsx6147d ago

Microsoft does not expect to ever make back the money they put into the xbox division. They have lost more then the ps2 ever made. Microsoft just wants to destroy console gaming as it is now and convert xbox users to media center pcs running microsoft software using online distributed games.

Sony on the other hand has put all its cash on bluray and that also put them in huge debt.Regardless both companies are not to concerned about current profits.

Flops. Put brain into gear and understand a loss in one f the 4 quarters of the the year does not equal a fiscal year loss. I would use apples to describe it to you if I could, but oh well

Q1 profit = +1
Q2 Profit = 0
Q3 Profit = +1
Q4 Profit = -1 (loss)

Here is the hard part now. 1 + 1 + -1 = 1 = profit

That Darkrider66 guys clearly needs help with his vendetta against all things Microsoft and XBox 360. The truth is here:

"During fiscal year 2009, Microsoft shipped 11.2 million Xbox 360 consoles compared with 8.7 million Xbox 360 consoles during fiscal year 2008. These last figures explain why the Xbox saw its second straight year of profitability and even if the Entertainment and Devices posted an operating loss of $130 million in the fourth quarter, it ended fiscal year 2009 with an operating income of $169 million."

-Software attach rate continues to grow and leads the industry at 8.6

I'm surprised it might heat up enough to make the front page sometimes PS3 fans will approve stories fast so they don't heat up while people surf pending. I was reading the darkrider article and surfed around and seen that he went to great lengths in trying to post that story. PS3 fanboy+posting 360 news=bad news.

user39158006148d ago

I just read another article with some dumb ass fandroid stating that the xbox division lost revenues for the second straight year, yeap! a fandroid with no clue.

Xbox 360 its here to stay and will eliminate sony once and for all.

Mark my words sony will post at least 1.5 billion dollars lost in revenues and their stocks will sink faster than the titanic.

For all you fandroids out there listen carefully, kiss my @ss.

El Botto6148d ago

seeing how the division encompasses more than just the XBOX division.

The XBOX division in in red ink and has been for a very long time. Only looped together with their other entertainment operations did they manage to squeeze some profit out.

Whats further embarrassing is that their XBOX pricecut only happened 2 quarters ago. Meaning that the effect of their suicidal move, is only reflected in the last 2 quarters (which are losses). So the total year income is highly misleading as the suicidal move will only continue to bite the XBOX division in further quarters.

Nice try, xbots, but ultimately fail. Analysts arent stupid, they are eating MS up.

And when Google OS comes out, MS is finished.

KingKionic 6148d ago (Edited 6148d ago )

You do know the Google os for net books ?

I seriously cant see Google " finishing Ms " with that OS .

El Botto6148d ago (Edited 6148d ago )

MS has lost a dozen talented programmers to Google already in the past few years.

http://www.infoworld.com/t/...

It was said that when Lee left MS for Google, the day Lee told Balmer of his leaving, Balmer summoned him to the big room. There he asked Lee to "please say its not Google". And when lee said "its Google", Balmer FLIPPED and I mean absolutely FLIPPED. Cussing, cursing and throwing his chair and saying how he "will break Google". Its been 3 years and Google is winning on every front as far as I know. Some "breaking" eh.

Lee wasnt the first and wont be the last. And in the gaming business, it was Moore and Schappeart who left for EA.

And Google OS isnt going to be just for notebooks. Youre a fool to believe such nonsense in the first place.

1) Notebooks is also challenging Windows monopoly
2) Google STARTS with notebooks but their aim is obviously much higher. They have said they would move to PCs themselves.

Either way, MSs monopoly is coming to an end.

The bottomline is this, ok. Google is probably not a saint either. But against MS, they are simply going to win. MS cant beat Google. Just like how 360 cant win from PS3.
And if anyone from MS claims otherwise, its just make believe and PR BS.

KingKionic 6148d ago (Edited 6148d ago )

Currently it`s only for net books .

You haven't really proved how they will end Microsoft yet .

mint royale6148d ago

HAHAHAHAHA. I sincercerly hope no one believes your PR BS. The 360 can't win from the ps3? Are you sure about that? Why has its lead increased from 5.5 million upon the ps3's release to 8million+ now? In truth though its profits made on the system which I certainly use as a measure of success and in that case the ps3 has absolutely no change of beating the 360 and the 360 has absolutely no chance of beating the wii. Just deal with it because your denial is hilarious!

AngryTypingGuy6148d ago

Don't mind El Botto. He's a retard. He says just about every day how MS/Xbox is finished, when he knows it's here to stay for awhile. First Sony, then Google, right El Botto? So when MS is doing well even after Google's OS is released, then what are you going to say?

Anon19746148d ago (Edited 6148d ago )

The fact is, the truth about 360 sales doesn't often get through on N4G with the ever watchful 360 fans about. The article I posted yesterday is 100% correct, verified in Microsoft's own financials - the 360 had it's worst sales quarter in over 2 years. Now, considering Microsoft was just bragging about NPD numbers a month ago, it's nice when an article comes along and cuts through the spin. Despite the price cut, 360 sales have slowed again.
Now, of course we know that the 360 isn't the only one with slowing sales, but that's not the point. The point is Microsoft is going out of their way to give the opinion that the 360 isn't impacted - and it most clearly is. Why the 360 fans on this site don't think you should hear that information is beyond me. They have no problem approving articles regarding Sony/Nintendo slowing sales, but I had to get the mods involved to bring you an article about Microsoft being in the same boat. It's sad. This is supposed to be a site for gamers, looking for gamer news and clearly when it comes to reporting about Microsoft there's a rabid fanbase that feels it's their job to protect you from news they don't think you should hear.

Edit: And El Botto's right. Analysts are beating up Microsoft pretty good. MS Entertainment's profits fell 130% year over year at Christmas and they are struggling - which is why they bore the brunt of the layoffs Microsoft had earlier in the year. Also, 360 revenue doesn't even amount to half of MS Entertainments total revenue. There's a lot more there than just the Xbox, including Office for Mac, Mobile device Windows, PC gaming, Internet TV, Zune, and many more.

Sez 6148d ago

"The fact is, the truth about 360 sales doesn't often get through on N4G with the ever watchful 360 fans about" i know your not talking about 360 fanboys blocking negative 360 news. are you sure your on the right site. because i see sonyfanboys such as yourself blocking/reporting negative ps3 articles.

matter of fact. you guys only post/comment on negative 360 threads. so WHAT THE H3LL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT. and then you have the nerve to say this is a 360 article. sony and the ps3 shouldn't be brought up in this thread. i think you need to look at all of the negative threads that do get thru on the ps3. you will see alot of sonyfanboys bring up the 360/MS. when it clearly has nothing to do with them.

you clearly need to practice what you preach.and the fact that sony did worst than MS by losing 300 million compared to MS losing 130 million. only shows that your trying to hard to make MS look worst than sony. MS made a profit. get over it. they're not going anywhere. ok.

Anon19746148d ago (Edited 6148d ago )

News is news. If an article is newsworthy there's no doubt, but I have seen blogs trying to bash the PS3 without any facts, and you can better believe that N4G is better off without articles that outright lie.

All I can do is speak from my experience, and that was a decent, factual article I attempted to post was repeatedly torpedoed by liars claiming it was a duplicate article to keep this information from being posted. Obviously they either didn't read the article or ignored the content, but at the end of the day the mods had to intervene and I'm sure they noted who falsely tried to claim the article was a dupe.

Now, as for bringing up Sony in this article, that's blatantly off topic. If you want to discuss Sony's earnings, do it in a Sony article. Actually, it's funny you bring up Sony losing 300 million though, as that's how much profit Microsoft Entertainment lost from last year compared to this year, despite increased revenue. Obviously they're having issues, which is why the bulk of Microsoft's layoffs this year targeted the games division.
Don't bury your head in the sand and just accept the PR spin. Take a second and get informed. At the end of the day, what's going on with Sony doesn't change the issues facing Microsoft one bit. If I lose my job, but my neighbor loses his job too, does that change my situation?

El Botto6148d ago

Haha truly delusional.

MS XBOX division is a bleeding hole. Sucks for them. I would be very worried if I were you. All things taken into account, 360 is going to get a beating.

Ven10006148d ago

Um, 360 had a 5.5 million lead upon PS3 release and now it's up to 8 million? No, get your "facts" straight. 360 had a 10 million lead when PS3 was released and now the lead has SHRUNK to around 7. The lowest the lead got to was around 6 especially back in Jan-Aug 2008 when PS3 was outselling the 360 here in the US despite still having the $130 higher price tag. It was AFTER MS dropped the 360 down to $199 did it start selling more than the PS3 again. Let's keep it real here....
