The Revan reveal could be seen a mile away. But the plot twist in the final after credits cutscene in MGS4 that reveals everything you knew over 20 years of games was a lie was a much bigger reveal.

GWAVE6148d ago

Agreed. Most of the plot twists on this list are lame. The twists in MGS4 are some of the best in any game and/or movie/story/whatever.

Lots of these (like "OMG! Teh Flood!" and "You're Revan?!?!") are very cliche and poor choices. I can think of dozens of better choices. The plot twists from Planescape: Torment. The revelation at the end of Shadow of the Colossus. Kratos finding out what happened to his family. The list goes on and on.

morganfell6148d ago

I enjoyed the HALO series immensely. But The Flood isn't a plot twist, it is a plot direction. The writer doesn't understand the nature of a twist. I agree it is a great moment, but at no point were we lead down one path only to be shown the truth lay in another direction.

Cajun Chicken6148d ago

No, sorry, the Flood was a great twist in Halo1, because all of a sudden you had a different battle on your hands. After that I felt the Flood in the later games were like the Daleks turning up in Doctor Who; you knew they were going to turn up at some point and the suprise wasn't the same.

I still say the difference to the simple average Mankind VS Alien battlefield suddenly changing into a zombie like infection was a really good twist, especially when you kept on battling them at the end.
I especially like how the box art or initial previews of Halo never said a thing about the flood appearing halfway through the game, of what seemed to be a territorial, exploratory mission and a race against time for both races, then the third faction seeped in and changed everything. Say what you like about Halo 1, but Halo 1 imo, was perfection to play back then.

Xi6148d ago (Edited 6148d ago )

sorry...

MGS's everything is a lie plot twist isn't cliche, but the raven and flood twists are?

And morgan, what are you talking about. In halo no one expected the flood, everything up to that point made it seem as if the halo's were just a mysterious weapon that the covenant wanted to use against the humans. Then all of a sudden we find out that it's really designed to study and destory the flood, that's a major plot twist.

Unicron6148d ago

Gravemind deserved better in Halo 3. Talk about wasted boss battle potential. *sigh*

ChampIDC6148d ago

Heck, not only boss potential, but wasted story potential. It was almost like he was in the game because he had to be, not because Bungie cared to give him some more story.

morganfell6148d ago (Edited 6148d ago )

Sorry Cajun, that is not a plot twist. It is still a plot direction.

A twist would have occurred had you been fighting the Flood only to discover the reason they were anticipating your every move was because Captain Keyes was leading the flood. That wasn't the case and you kill Keyes anyway.

It would have been a twist if you discovered that the Flood were actually the Forerunners and they had mutated.

But simply introducing a new enemy with no prior information about said enemy that led you to a deduction that you now realize to be false is not a plot twist.

There are plot twists in the Halo series but the introduction of the Flood in HALO isn't a twist. You have the same issues as the writer. There are plot directions and there are plot mechanics. A twist is a type of plot mechanic. Twists are changes in expected, foreshadowed outcomes. It's a great story direction, it just isn't a twist.

And I agree about Gravemind. In that moment when he has both the Chief and the Arbiter I just knew this was leading to an eventual epic showdown with Gravemind and somebody. Who I was not sure. And they just dropped that part of the plot for a quick tie up. Gravemind was a great invention that deserved more.

Fire44446148d ago

You're right, the addition of the flood was just a change in plot direction.

...which is the definition of a plot twist.

GWAVE6148d ago

You guys arguing with Morgan about the definition of plot twist didn't do so well in high-school Lit classes, did you?

Plot direction =/= plot twist.

Xi6148d ago (Edited 6148d ago )

morgan, you're wrong.

A change in plot direction is something such as a character going from being a protaganist in a conflict to being an antagonist, or vice versa.

ie, a character finding out that the person he's been fighting happens to have characteristic that humanize him to the point the character feels guilt or disdain for his actions. Therefore ending the conflict. The story goes from one of revenge to one of humility.

A plot twist is when something happens which keeps the story going in the same direction but changes an integral part of the story such that it redefines the characters understanding of the situation. ie, finding out the halo is used to destroy the flood as opposed to being a covenant super weapon.

Plot twists aren't things like "nanomachines".

Tony P6148d ago (Edited 6148d ago )

A good plot twist imo is directly proportional to the amount of foreshadowing. If they let me play Sherlock (or let me think I can guess) it seems all the more unexpected.

Anyway, I loved Planescape: Torment as well. More people played KOTOR, but P:T was much better written for using a similar twist.

I thought SotC's main twist was decent, but I already figured what was going down early in the game. Rule: bargains to bring people back to life are never made with forces of good.

Silent Hill 2, just kinda effed me up. I applaud it. It's a very mature game that way and can really mess with you, especially if you're in a relationship/married.

morganfell6148d ago (Edited 6148d ago )

No one said a nanomachine was a plot twist. After everything you had been led to believe across 20 years of Metal Gear games you discover at the end that all of your enemies were in fact trying to do the right thing, you were a pawn of the bad guys, and the man you attempted to kill twice was actually on the side of right. Now those are just a few of the plot twists.

Had you actually played MGS4 before you spoke you might know something but it is obvious you did not. Your response hardly warranted my informing you but there you are. There is a corner you can use over to your left.

And Xi you are absolutely out in left field...alone...if you think that a plot twist can occur without foreshadowing. You have to have been led to believe something that is then altered severely or countered by a plot point reveal.

The plot direction in HALO changed because there was a radical introduction of a new antagonist. That isn't a plot twist. So you are definitely off the mark and quite wrong. No foreshadowing, no leading you down a path of either incident or engineered belief, no plot twist. You cannot twist something unless it has been established through either display of plot points or foreshadowing that generates a belief about particular facts in the story.

The plot in the game confused the hell out of me. Maybe it was just because I got tired of watching the 30 minute cut scene at the end of the game.

NOT EVEN ONE PLAYSTATION EXCLUSIVE IN THERE AT ALL

WHAT ABOUT FF7′S ZACK REVEALATION IN FINAL FANTASY 7 PS1 GAME – IT CRUSHED PPL AND MADE THEM THINK ENTIRELY DIFFERENT TOWARDS CLOUD WHEN THEY FOUND OUT THE TRUTH

GREAT ARTICLE GUYS BUT OBVIOUSLY BIASED ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY HAVE TITLES FROM YEARS AND YEARS AGO

Christopher6147d ago (Edited 6147d ago )

I think going in with not-so-fresh eyes it was easy to see the hints that lead up to the Revan reveal. But, at the time that the game came out and playing through it for the first time, I was actually in the dark until the last part of the game because they kept me busy with other plot elements.

It's like one of those moments when I'm rewatching a TV show and only 5 minutes into the show find that one clue in the upper right hand corner and go "how come I didn't see that earlier?" Well, because you were so engrossed in the main storyline elements that the hints splattered about weren't big on your radar.

Jmlopezbr6147d ago

Could you compare the flood showing up in Halo to the mutants showing up in Uncharted?

Carl14126147d ago

WTF? I never knew that Shiek was Zelda...And i've completed that game quite a few times

Pick a Metal Gear... any Metal Gear. ;-)

TheBand1t6148d ago

Though I wouldn't call this a plot 'twist', probably my biggest gaming shock from the PS2 era was the transition of the happy go luck Jak and Daxter to Jak IIs exceptionally dark tones.

Cajun Chicken6148d ago

Yeah, that was pretty damn awesome. I love how that series grew up as I did going through High School and College.
I admit it, I think the 'dark' Haven world of Jak was better for the series, I just find it so hard to play the first one now.

Bioshock blew my mind the most this generation when it comes to plot twists. My god...after like more than a year I still cant believe it... It was so mindblowing...my jaws really did drop, I was shaking with disbelief...bah...Im looking forward to Bioshock 2!

tehk1w16148d ago

If you played System Shock you would've seen the plot twist coming...from the very beginning of the game.

DeepInterludium6147d ago

Same with System Shock 2.

Hmm, so you mean AI that went mad and tried to take over the world in the first game didn't have a change of heart and really is still trying to take over the world? Shocking!!

Xi6148d ago

the last level was just so amazing because it was completely unexpected.
