Real-time HD video encoding on PS3?

Eurogamer:

If there is one thing that is beyond doubt, it's that the raw computational power of the PlayStation 3's Cell CPU is something quite special. The architecture of the chip is somewhat unique - featuring a conventional PowerPC CPU core surrounded by eight ultra-fast satellite sub-processors (though one is disabled), each capable of some pretty phenomenal number-crunching. Just one of these SPUs can decode 300 MP3 files simultaneously in real time.

So long as the tasks fit the unique processing properties of the SPUs, in theory the chip should be capable of outperforming even the very latest in Intel i7 processing technology. Certainly, the Folding@Home client built into the Life With PlayStation software is clearly outperforming the equivalent multi-core Folding client available for PC (more on that a bit later).

How many times I have said this and everybody told me that I was a liar... I even had a discussion with the Mart through private messages trying to explain it but the guy is such a fanboy that even when I presented links he didn't believe anything of what I was saying to him. Now here we have Eurogamer saying that THE CELL is on par with the latest Intel i7... Which at the same time leave very far away the three core CPU on the X360.

Like I always say, the PS3's so powerful because of the way it was build. You can say that the Ram this or that the X360 GPU is more powerful but that does not change a thing! Why?

Because the way the Cell was built was to work directly with the GPU and to some extend with the ram too. That's why I say that the X360 is just a PC. Equally easy to program for but equally easy to max it out too. You can look for new techniques to try improve the the X360 graphics but the architecture is so straight forward that it'll just be a waste of time, while the PS3 has much more room for improvements thanks to the so called "complicated" architecture.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle49d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
