PlayStation 3 Computing Breaks 260 barrier, 112-bit Prime ECDLP Solved

Laboratory for Cryptic Algorithms says:
"We are pleased to announce that we set a new record for the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem (ECDLP) by solving it over a 112-bit finite field.
The previous record was for a 109-bit prime field and dates back from October 2002. Our calculation was done on a cluster of PlayStation 3 game consoles at the Laboratory for Cryptologic Algorithms at the EPFL."

Thats awesome...

...

...

<_<

>_>

I have no idea what it means.

jack_burt0n6188d ago

"Basically we stuck a load of ps3s together in a room hooked them up to each other, and on the 9th july it became self aware... woah....... best thing is tho when it speaks it sounds just like Nolan North" LOL

Trollimite6188d ago

a group of ps3's can crack the 260 barrier, but it cant play ps2 games!

wake up people my old pc thats still running windows 95 can run ps2 games!

emmulation is closer than we think. and nay sayers who say that the ps3 cant run the emotion engine, you are obviously wrong!

snaz276188d ago

i also have no clue what it means, but did you actually read the article? cos i did and now my head is throbbing! lmao oh and im still non the wiser, but i got 1 thing from it, 200 ps3 beat a record that 4000-5000 pcs had set in 2002 lol, what the record means or relates to in the real world tho i have no idea lmao

trolimite... the EE is already emulated, but its the graphics synthesizer they havent managed to emulate just yet, or they just havent implimented it yet, but if they could dont you think they would have already? there most be some reason why they havent done it yet, and only someone who wrote this article or the tech heads at sony will know why lol

Trollimite6188d ago

the only reason why they havent done it yet is because the ps2 is still alive and well!

at next years E3 ps2 backwards compatibility will go live via firmware update, to celebrate the end of the ps2 10 year life cycle! quote me on that! also the addition of ps2 games on PSN will be announced!

Microsoft Xbox 3606188d ago (Edited 6188d ago )

@Trollimite

How much you want to bet your old Win95 machine cannot play even one PS2 game? JK LOL

My old atari can emulate 360 games. ;)

BTW the PS3 is a beast. It's been helping NASA and the military in research for years now.

snaz276188d ago

but that argument of the ps2 still going being the reason for them not emulating the graphics synthesizer is rediculous, as they did ps2 backwards compatibility from the start!, if the reason is that the ps2 is still alive why did they have it then? they took it out to reduce costs, then they put the graphics synthesizer back in and emulated the EE... so why they do that? sony would love to emulate the whole ps2, cos it would cut costs for them again, if they could do it now they would, they are not waiting for the ps2 to die, they simply can not do it yet.

I like how one of the authors is an MS guy. Put aside your comapny's competition for a bit and just focus on the tech. On another note, this article should come with crib notes.

Lastly, Cyberdyne is already a well-known robotics manufacturer in Japan. Be ready for war, gentlemen.

Tempist6188d ago

Why do people assume that the PS3 clusters are Skynet? If it's a 'Skynet 2.0' wouldn't it have the basic intelligence to not name itself Skynet and not be obvious about it. No wonder people are going to get trampled by machine intelligence when they are so quick to only go to the obvious.

I for one welcome my new Silicon based lifeform overlords with saying that the following statement is true, and that my prior statement is false.

JL6188d ago

This is concerning encryption/cryptography people. Thus, security. Essentially meaning the ps3 is a beast at hacking.

evrfighter6188d ago

well if the ps3 fails this gen at least it would still have its uses..

everybody needs a calculator :D

phosphor1126188d ago

Their cluster of PS3's was able to work an algorithm (based on an ellipse) to the 2 ^ 60th degree using a 112 bit system. The algorithm is used for (or can be used for) cryptography, which is encryption. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... ) Being able to work an algorithm for that high can allow for extremely secure encryptions that are pretty much impractical for anyone to decipher with a normal computer.

it all comes down to 1 thing, the cell is a MONSTER @ processing

aaron58296188d ago

OOOOoohhhh !!

Still, i dont get it.. :|

TheReaper426188d ago

A group of hackers used 500 PS3 to crack the FBI's Central computer.

Wake me up when the PS3 figures out how to time travel. Til then I'll be sleeping under this rock in this newly found cave I've discovered.

....... i really dont understand that..... could someone explain it in simple terms for all of us who dont go and study stuff like this

@below. lol probly will end up with something like that with 20 more ps3s

JL6188d ago

It is about encryption. Like, security in computers...mainframes. They do things like this to test encyption methods and standards to check how secure the system is. Basically this says the PS3 (the cell) is a beast when it comes to hacking (though of course they're not promoting hacking, just testing the security).

Real Gambler6188d ago

They ran for 6 months straight (this project took 3.5, but they also ran other projects). And not a word about having many failures (Though, I'm suspecting that with a typical industry failure rate, they may have had to replace up to 3 of them)

Amazing since it's "only" a game console. Kudos. Those projects do show how well built the PS3 is.

Guitardr856188d ago

What is really funny is that there actually already is a "SKYNET". It's a British missle tracking system I believe...and it IS called SKYNET!

Microsoft Xbox 3606188d ago

Skynet powered by the Cell confirmed.

This is what it is going to be:

Playstation Cloud=Skynet!

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle56d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
