So is Blu-ray really ripping off consumers?

Engadgethd: That's the idea behind a recent column on TheStreet.com, which cites consumers happiness with DVD and the oncoming march of downloads as reasons that "Blu-ray rips off consumers."

Now to be fair, actually within the article are less hyperbolic statements like "Blu-ray hasn't failed" but even from here we can see several holes in the author's theory. To begin, he claims that downloadable and streaming high definition video is "360 lines away from providing the same clarity" demonstrating an unfortunate ignorance of 1080p downloads already available from Vudu and streaming from CBS.com.

so now we've established that Blu-ray is a success, we approach the knocking in a different way. and no i haven't read this simply because whether it's pro or anti, the headline says it all

NOOBKILLA6170d ago

Ok lets be real here everybody. Until the US has a standard bandwidth of at least 100mpbs down you want see anything that will match blu-ray quality video/sound via the internet. The average household computer cpu can't even run 1080p video without lagging!

Also, the fact that Wal-mart has a $98 blu-ray player means that blu-ray is on the verge of making it break into mainstream.

The only way blu-ray is a waste of money is if the consumer doesn't know any better and attempts to hook it up to a TV that doesn't have a decent contrast ratio or refresh rate. Or even worst, a 720p tv with HDMI input! To them I say step your tv game up.

Boody-Bandit6170d ago (Edited 6170d ago )

Another doom and gloom article. DD wont be a mainstream reality for years. At least not to the quality of what BluRay offers. I have Comcast and they have already warned download caps for DD.

Harry_Manback6170d ago (Edited 6170d ago )

And I love it.

PAPERCHASER03966170d ago (Edited 6170d ago )

With the recent switch to digital programming many consumers decided to upgrade to hi-definition tvs respectably 1080p or so... It's just a matter of meeting the right salesman now that the prices are down on both the players and a lot of the movies therefore blu-ray will continue to push forward because of it's beauty and sound

EXCLUSIVEGAMER6170d ago (Edited 6170d ago )

"So is Microsoft really ripping off consumers?" article?

zune
HD-DVD
rrod
vista

just to name a few. i wont go apes#it with the list above, nor will i elaborate on many valid points; simply becuz the kids on this site would kill my mailbox with hate.

lol, my mailbox would get halowned

FamilyGuy6170d ago (Edited 6170d ago )

Keep scraping, no one is forcing people to buy blu-ray movies, it's a choice they willingly make, price considered and all.

As far as comparing it to streaming, it's all about bitrate. Sure, there are 1080p streaming sites now (I prefer MKVs) but they still aren't holding a candle to real bluray movies, the closest comparison really are the MKV version released through the pirating community.

What more can be said, you'd have to have watched each to really notice.

No one's being "ripped off", there are cheap blu-ray players a cheap blu-ray movies already in the wild, one only need look as far as their local wal-mart for their $10 and $15 older blu-ray movie section (within the section) Star Gate, Crash, Saw, HellBoy, and The Fifth Element to name a few.

EXCLUSIVEGAMER6170d ago (Edited 6170d ago )

I agree 1billion %.

None of these streaming articles never mention bitrate though.LOL.

wanna know why?

The average consumer doesnt know that the (insert ANY company here) stream is processed 5-7 Mbps with 0.512-2Mbps audio. nor will they know that the average bluray video is about 35-40Mbps and 6-8Mbps audio.

And why would they? They would only be admitting that streaming is not up to par with bluray quality. OR simply put:

bluray>>>>streami ng

Boody-Bandit6170d ago (Edited 6170d ago )

Exactly and agreed.
But the reality of what you wrote would mean having to see less doom and gloom articles. What fun would that be? /s

ThanatosDMC6170d ago

I'm still holding off on my Heroes Season 1 bluray purchase. It's $80 while the DVD version is about $40. I really want it on bluray. But damn, that's almost two games right there.

FamilyGuy6170d ago (Edited 6170d ago )

$70?

A seller through amazon

http://www.amazon.com/exec/...
And yes, that's new, used goes as low as $30

I wonder if the headline would have read "So is HD DVD really ripping off consumers" if HD DVD had won?

Tony P6170d ago

It's a response to a negative article about Blu-ray. And, to answer your question, probably.

It's not like HD-DVD would have gotten rid of DD, a concern on which the offending article heavily bases its arguments.

ApocalypseShadow6170d ago (Edited 6170d ago )

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle37d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde44d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy44d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.
