Exclusive: Sony's new development strategy for PSP

SPECIAL REPORT: New content pipeline and cheaper, smaller download games on the way

Platform-holder Sony is aggressively courting developers around the world to work on digitally distributed games for PSP in a bid to grow the software offer on its handheld.

And, leading games development magazine Develop has revealed, the firm is planning to introduce a streamlined content pipeline for the platform – which includes abolishing concept approval – plus cheaper devkits, shorter quality assurance processes, and very low price points for new games.

The details were revealed exclusively to Develop last month at a behind-closed-doors event at E3.

Anything Sony can do to win favor for the PSP Go! is a good thing. As it stands currently, it's already shaping up to be a huge commercial failure.

Syronicus6151d ago

You have to know that smaller is better and now with this news that games will look and play more like iPod Touch titles, the PSPgo will look even more appealing tot he same market that the Touch is hitting up. I'm not saying it will blow us out of the water but I suspect that the media is only bashing this now and will soon sing another tune as soon as this thing hits Japan and NA. You can bet that it will sell well, I can guarantee it.

whoelse6151d ago

The only problem with the go is the price. Apart from that, it could be an awesome platform for developers and consumers.

thereapersson6151d ago

That, and Sony still hasn't announced an official solution for those UMD's that people have already purchased.

also, LOL @ the number of disagrees.

SL1M DADDY6151d ago (Edited 6151d ago )

Sony is planning to sell both the PSP-Go and the PSP-3000 side by side for the time being. They have not made any announcements pertaining to the cancelation of the PSP-3000 if I recall correctly.

Lastly, it cracks me up how so many people bashed UMD and now they're all out crying how Sony is neglecting the UMD crowd. It only proves that Sony cannot please everybody, no matter how much support they show.

And.. You get all of those disagrees because of stupid comments like "As it stands currently, it's already shaping up to be a huge commercial failure."

That comment is the only thing that resembles any sort of failure.

In my opinion it's smart but a huge gamble. You look at how the iPod and Iphone are doing with mobile gaming and it’s insane. Don't be surprise if Sony releases a cheap PSP Go dev kit for minor independent developers to design games for the PSP Go. Also don't be shocked if Sony introduces its own version of the Apple App Store. The problem with Sony is even if they had all that stuff the average person wouldn't know because their marketing is very sub-par.

I have a PSP-2000 and I am very much looking forward to the PSP Go. With the system being expandable to 32GB at launch, I see great potential.

Again fanboys, it's just my opinion. Get a damn job so you can afford more than one system. It will eliminate your fanboyism, trust me!!

@SL1M DADDY

Really, because it looks crap to me, and no site that i read seems to like it.

heroicjanitor6151d ago

They are just currently pretending that Sony is evil because of the price point. I guarantee it costs more to make a psp go than a wii.

Ju6151d ago

"it's already shaping up to be a huge commercial failure. " Talking about perception. Its not even out yet.

facelike6151d ago

They did lower the price of the dev kits for the PSP, that was announced at E3. What you are saying as an opinion is really fact, thats what the article is stating. And for everyone saying this will be a commercial failure, the new PSP Go games will work on a PSP 1000, 2000, or 3000. Plus there is already a PSP store you can access from the PSP it's self. For people who don't want to spend 250, the 180 model will do everything minus the "cool, new" factor.

saint_john_paul_ii6151d ago

perhaps you read your news at Kotaku?

So far almost every news site has had good impressions about it, their only complaints are pricing and battery life.

NOOBKILLA6151d ago (Edited 6151d ago )

The reason I said it is my opinion is because the last time I checked (please correct me if I’m wrong) Sony drop the PSP dev kit to $1,000 the week after E3. The iphone dev kit is around $250 or $300. I don't know about you but I don't see that many people rushing out to drop a grand to develop for the PSP if they can do iphone games for 1/3 of the cost.

What I don't understand is why everybody wants to get upset at Sony for how they price their hardware. Sony always loses money on their hardware. I didn't hear anybody getting upset when it was stated back in 2006 that it cost Nintendo $158 to make “1” Wii. Nintendo almost 3 years ago was making close to $100 off of every system and they still haven't dropped the price.

Quick Math....$170 you get just a PSP w/ no mem stick. $80 more you get a PSP Go with bluetooth, 16gigs of memory, and pure hotness!!

Always remember you get what you pay for. I game on my PC, 360, PS3, Wii and my PSP. I love them all!!

FamilyGuy6150d ago

ALL PSPs will be able to benefit from these recent improvements, not just the the Go!. Everything about it means more games for the hand-held , ports of Iphone made games aren't even out of the question so i wonder how sonys store will handle all the content. Meaning, i hope it gets it's own section if tons of things start rolling in every week.

whats that you say, their new strategy is to charge the same to download psp games as they did for the umd's?, yeah i agree it is a rip off

@Syronicus

what your saying is your assumption, your assumptions are not fact, the fact that it looks like i-tunes automatically means it's going to be cheaper?, sony is not apple.

when has sony said that the digital games would be cheaper, all the reports i've read said that the games would be the same price as the UMD's which is a rip off, and many speculate the reason for this is to make up for a $50 ps3 price drop.

Syronicus6151d ago (Edited 6151d ago )

Just asking because if you look at their new model for getting software tot he PSPgo, it looks a lot like iTunes. That would mean that perhaps more and more games will come tot he PSPgo at a much cheaper price as they do for the iPod. Now, if you think the iPod is a rip then sure, this would be too but for those who want all the features the PSP has and some great pick up and go games, then it's not all bad.

And... Why is it that you think you have just one bubble? Just asking...

Edit: @ above - Sure, based off my assumptions. But they are no different than the assumptions you have made about pricing. The only difference is that my assumptions are based off of facts about how well the PSP did when it was slimmed down. Sales shot through the roof. It's also a fact that the smaller the device the better it sells in Japan and as we know, Japan is a primary place of sales for these devices. Now coupled with a digital distribution that is parallel to the iTunes store, the PSPgo will look even more attractive to the regions that focus more on DLC.

You can knock it all you want but in the end, you as well as me are assuming. I am simply assuming based on what history has shown us and you are simply parroting the bias media that seems to think it is popular at the moment to bash anything Sony tries. It's a shame too since they have shown some pretty cool innovations and even if you don't like it, they are still very cool for so many others.

Ju6151d ago

You're not paying for the physical media, but for the content = the game.

Now, with lower dev kits, hopefully a higher number of PSN based games, reduced development costs and such, I'd expect the games to become cheaper. But what you pay for is the production value, not the "production cost for an UMD disk".

BTW: PSN games are not really expensive. Graw2 PSP $19.90.

Close_Second6151d ago

...PixelJunk Monsters on PSP!!!

Has to be one of the most addictive games released on PSN for PS3 so can't wait for the portable version.

Ravage276151d ago

Getting all the rainbows was freaking tough, but i enjoyed every moment of it. Wonder if they will add new towers and stuff for PJM Deluxe

Sev6151d ago

I can confirm Creat Studios is working on unique PSP go games. I spoke with them about it off the record at E3.

SoapShoes6151d ago

You can confirm it because it is right in the article. :D
