'Heavy Rain' Delay To 2010 - Why It's A Smart Move

MTV Multiplayer writes:

"Ever since I heard that Sony was planning on launching "Heavy Rain" alongside the likes of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2," "Splinter Cell: Conviction" and "Guitar Hero 5? I knew something needed to give. Sony learned a very important lesson last year, when "LittleBigPlanet" failed to reach sales expectations: Don't put your new franchises up against dozens of already-popular ones. "Heavy Rain" would undoubtedly be drowned in the crush of the holiday gaming season."

Yeah it was a smart move back then, but now the competition has risen for 2010

Also, When was MAG pushed to 2010??

UnSelf6158d ago

thats a goodass question.

in fact now that i think about it, this actually bodes well for me, as i was goin to skip MW2 just cuz of MAG.

Now i really hope it did get pushed back

Yeah but I have the feeling nothing too big will come out before GOW3. Having Heavy Rain release in say January would be a smart move, there's not much coming out, people are burnt out on the more typical games of the holiday season, it's a great time to try something new. Also I have the feeling that all those Take-Two games won't be coming out in January.. possibly February, but probably not January. I just hope that they can successfully market this as "interactive media" more than a "game," make people understand that it's more like a movie that they control. The way I describe it to people is I describe a horror movie where the stupid blonde does something that's obviously retarded, and the audience is left yelling at the screen "why the f!ck would you go in there? why would you hide behind the door? why would you do this?" etc, only now they can control the actor and make those choices. I think "interactive narrative" might be a better descriptor than "interactive media," since games ARE interactive media.

EDIT: and I think it's probably good for MAG to get pushed into '10. The PS3 exclusive '10 lineup (that we know of) was looking a little weak next to this year's (despite how awesome we all know GOW3 will be), and losing MAG and Heavy Rain in late '09 still leaves an amazing '09 lineup left over. There's been Killzone, Infamous, the Show, and soon Uncharted 2 and R&C, that's a lot of high quality exclusives for one year. They're right to pace things a bit, let people save up some money, and MAG and Heavy Rain both seem like games that could continuously be polished and would easily benefit from extra development time.

it would be smart if heavy rain to come out may-june to advertise as a summer movie thriller. and considering how june & july are generally slow months it would be perfect for heavy rain to come out and not be overshadowed

mistajeff6158d ago

That's what I've been saying about games in general... look at this July.. there's NOTHING. Yet all the high school kids are out of school and working, making money that they want to spend right away, but there's no big game releases. If you dropped a AAA title in July I feel it would sell well.

and while you're at it, bring wkc this fall as well

Please stop comparing video games to movies

"Many video games catch not only great commercial attention but remarkable critical attention as well. We have seen games like Heavy Rain, The Last of Us Part II, and even entries in the Metal Gear series described as fantastic interactive experiences, even heralded in the same way as Hollywood's greatest films.

I would suggest that not only is this an unfair comparison but also a harmful one. Video games, by their very nature, are an intricately different medium and should be weighed against one another rather than another form of media," Phillip writes for GF365.

Yes, please stop. They're better than most hollywood drivel nowadays.

BLAKHOODe2015d ago

I think Hollywood films will becoming increasingly more like video games in the future, especially as the world embraces the "new normal" from the pandemic. It makes sense, as games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales showcase just how realistically we're reaching in graphical capabilities, as well as showcase extreme action sequences in spectacular ways. And as time goes by, it'll get easier and cheaper to produce such "art", as well as create new star "actors" that never age, never die, never complain, never gets involved in scandals, etc. Technology is amazing and we're only just getting a taste of what it'll eventually be.

sourOG2015d ago

No. Some games are like movies.

medman2015d ago (Edited 2015d ago )

No. For the money spent, a quality game provides far more entertainment value than a quality movie. Especially when looking at what is going on in the world, and how a studio can attempt to pilfer from consumers by charging 30 dollars for Mulan via streaming. Ridiculous. There is no comparison....games all day.
