PS3: Best entertainment centre available?

While it's debatable whether Sony's current-gen console (the PlayStation 3, for the cave dwellers amongst you) is the best games console on the market - PSBeyond takes a look at why, with features like PlayTV, Sky deals, blu-ray and more, it is now a definitive competitor for the best entertainment centre available today.

Well, as for Racers the ps3 has the competition beat. I mean GT3 is still my favorite sim racer to date, then Motorstorm Pacific Rift is the most fun off road racer in exsistance. Wipeout HD and GT5P are just icing on the cake.

As for shooters, the 360 wins because MW2 is gonna have better networking then the ps3, but its multiplat. Thats the best shooter period, but still, Killzone 2 is a beast, Warhawk is still one of the best shooters too. We will just have to see who wins with the fps crown when MAG comes.

As for action adventure, Sony pwns hands down. inFamous, God of War 3, Uncharted, and Ratchet are AAA titles, but the New Mario, Metroid, and Zelda might take the crown.

Rpgs Sony wins hands down with everything coming such as WKC, Demon's souls, FF13 vs, FF14 online, plus the whole ps2 and ps1 library, anyone who says different is a fool.

Either console can get developers to make exclusive games that can rule out these comments with the release of some new games. Besides, reviews of games are subjective -- one man's trash and all that. This article is more about the extra value that is brought to the table as an entertainment centre, rather than just being a games console.

G3TDOWN6166d ago (Edited 6166d ago )

360 has good games for it fans too but

PS3 has better features. whoever disagrees with this one is FANBOY !!!

Greywulf6166d ago

For the same reasons the PS3 is "superior" is the same reason its inferior to someone else. I think we have all been arguing about this for 3 years. And its the same exact argument, that never changes. And i do mean never changes. You will always prove that you like something over something else, because its the reason you own/purchased it in the first place. As this thing is about to prove... I think Im done debating it.

People like the PS3, people like the 360, and way more people like the Wii :).

psbeyond6166d ago

@Greywulf: I like all consoles. I still like my dusty old megadrive (Streets of Rage, anyone?). But this article takes a look at the PS3 as an all in one media centre, rather than just a games console.

In this article, we're looking at value for the average tech consumer, not the hardcore console gamer.

menoyou6166d ago

The answer to this article is Yes. There is no debating it.

arika6166d ago (Edited 6166d ago )

i totally agree that the ps3 is the best entertainment system and probably the best gaming console to come out this generation.

gaming
-best exclusive and multiplatform games

entertainment
-best bluray player around(can be upgraded w/ firmware updates)
-free internet connection
-storing and playing music, pictures and movies

others
-most aerodynamic console

bnaked6166d ago

Blu-ray is the biggest advantage. Wow, you should watch Dark Knight on Blu-ray, the quality is outstanding!

The Lazy One6166d ago

it's a great deal if you want a blu-ray player. If you don't really care about upgrading formats, then I'd say the price gap widens enough to make it more debatable

bnaked6166d ago

If you have a HD TV, you NEED a Blu-ray player.. Everybody is watching a film some day and Blu-ray is the new standard.

gaffyh6166d ago

Yeah definitely as a home entertainment hub, PS3 is definitely the best one you can get. Seriously all it needs is MKV (h264/x264) support and subtitle file support, and it is instantly the best HDD media player available.

Blu-Ray is just an extra imo, I care more about it's effect on games than movies, but the handful of BD movies I have seen have a crazy amount of quality.

Why dis6166d ago (Edited 6166d ago )

LOL SDF... PS3 isn't even close. Most that stuff doesn't even add to the multi media experience it just enhances the few things PS3 does do as a multi media entertainment centre.

LOL he added HD sound, he might as well have added "fancy photo mode" and listed that as a point for PS3 and a argument against competition's oggerings :p

gaffyh6166d ago

Seriously why dis. Why? Why can you not go one pro sony article and not troll. You cannot name ONE device apart from pc that offers as much features as the ps3 for the same value for money. If you come back and say xbox 360 because of hd streaming you are retarded.

ultimolu6165d ago

Grow up Why Dis, seriously.

And yes, I agree with the PS3 being the best entertainment center. I can watch bluray movies, DVD's, play games, use the internet for free...the PS3 has really awesome features.

The ps3 has better tech, but the 360 is better for online gaming. For one the 360 headsets cancel out noise better, games like COD4 and 5 play better online, and cross game chat is a standard that consoles should be following right now.

My argument is that sure the ps3 has the best tech, but the 360 is a better online gaming console. Anyone who says different is a fanboy. Now im gonna go back and play some Motorstorm PR. Good day gentlemen.

Omega46166d ago

Its good but not the best

Bluray: 360 got 1080p streaming
Memory Card Reader: not anymore
PSN: XBLM
PlayTV: not included in the box
SkyTV: I thought this was about the PS3 not PSP, 360 actually has Sky Player

PS3 still got a long way to go before it can be called the best entertainment centre, especially if you want to compare it to the 360

psbeyond6166d ago

That last bit about Sky was speculation on this article, seeing as we were talking about the PSP with remote play and PlayTV already - saying that surely it would drop for the PS3 soon too. Nothing has been confirmed on that yet, though.

It was just a quick connection while we were on the mention of the PSP, and potential updates in the future.

pippoppow6166d ago

Uhh oh here come the rest /\/\/\ haha.

psbeyond6166d ago

1080p is just a resolution, to be honest. Bitrates are also key to quality.

Blu-ray bitrates usually range from around 20Mbps to a max of 40Mbps. That's astonishingly good considering that most HD streams are between 4Mbps and 9Mbps. Now take into consideration that the max bitrate for a standard DVD is 9.8Mbps

The fact that the Xbox can stream 1080p means nothing compared to the PS3 playing blu-ray discs. And anyway, where are you getting those movies/box-sets available on blu-ray, to stream onto your Xbox? In most cases I could swear that's illegal.

Omega46166d ago

Bluray is definitely better than streaming, but the dynamic 1080p streaming coming to the 360 is more than a worthy competitor. As for Sky coming to PS3 its doubtful for now, im sure MS will make it exclusive for the 360 for a least a year or 2 like Netflix.

Throw in twitter, facebook, msn, last.fm, netflix, XBL Primtime (1 vs 100) and much much more and the 360 is clearly the best.

psbeyond6166d ago

Yeah, but PSN is free, unlike XBL.

karlowma6166d ago

And you get what you pay for.

silvacrest6166d ago

"Bluray: 360 got 1080p streaming"
some peoples internet is to slow to use that feature and others like a solid format, you get a garunteed 1080P res with blu ray, cant say the same with streaming

"Memory Card Reader: not anymore"
fair enough but im one of the lucky ones who have a 60 gig ps3 plus the memory card reader really isnt needed

"PSN: XBLM"
true but the PSN is catching up

"PlayTV: not included in the box"
so because i have to buy it seperate it doesnt count?

"SkyTV: I thought this was about the PS3 not PSP, 360 actually has Sky Player"

it will come eventually, mark my words and any service like hulu will always be better in terms of content and as far as i no the 360 doesnt have access to this yet

faisdotal6166d ago

You can't even copy media over Wifi/Ethernet from your PC to your 360, only stream. Pretty dumb.

D4RkNIKON6166d ago

When you mentioned twitter and facebook all I could do was laugh! 360 has a butchered and watered down version of these online services. PS3 has a complete web browser with full access to these websites and ALL of their features. And as you mentioned BluRay is better quality than streaming 1080p through an internet connection. So where is your point again?

bjornbear6166d ago (Edited 6166d ago )

Yes. You can't argue with that =/

Quite a few people bought a PS3 cuz of the cheap blu-ray alone, only to then be submerged into the amazing list of games.

As an overall package it has far more from the get go than anything else on the market ;) (i.e not having to buy extra stuff like wi-fi adaptor or paying for net. And don't bring in HDMI cable, thats nothing compared =))

Boody-Bandit6166d ago (Edited 6166d ago )

when comparing these 2 consoles?
There is one definitive area that can not be argued. The PS3 has superior sound and that matters a lot to home theater enthusiast such as myself when I am playing games or watching movies.

Also it is a better upscaling DVD player.

I believe the PS3 to be the overall better entertainment center. Especially for people that have good quality electronics to hook the PS3 up to.

Downtown boogey6165d ago

BUILT IN Wi-Fi? In this proportion PSN trumps XBLA because it's FREE...
HDMI and optic cable (basicly better output). Bluetooth!!
And also: I've got the memory card readers!

pippoppow6166d ago

Anyone who has a full home theater setup willwant a PS3 over any other console. Full HD support due to Blu-ray which not only includes HD visuals but sound as well for both movies and games. 360's HD streaming may come pretty close visually but will not have HD sound. Media center capabilites are at least as good as anyones if not a little better. Sure a gamers choice in games and online features may come down to preference but the inclusion of Blu-ray in all PS3s which is the only console on the market to contain one puts it in the #1 spot for those with a home theater set up and for those who also like to use it as a media center as well.

madpuppy6166d ago

Blu-ray player on the market as well as a gaming machine for my Theater room, It was the best thing that I have done, nothing like watching hi def on a 100" screen in DD and DTS.

Boody-Bandit6166d ago (Edited 6166d ago )

It is without question the choice for home theater enthusiast.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle17d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Relientk7725d ago

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga25d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199225d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga25d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman25d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box25d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion25d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7225d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7525d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit25d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14925d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7725d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
