That depends, how long can retailers justify selling the PSP Go when they know it wont bring them a single penny in game sales?
That's not a dig at the Go, or Sony, or anything like that, but it's well known that retailers don't actually like selling consoles. Profit margins are slim and, comparitavly speaking, they take up a lot of room, room that could be better used to stock more games that'll bring them in more money. They agree to sell the consoles on the basis that they'll make a lot of money from the sales of games.
I'm sure Sony will make some PSN cards available to them, but I suspect the profit margins will have to be in there for it to be worthwhile. Or better yet, give them a Kiosk that someone can just plug their PSP into in order to instantly download games with special "store offers" (Discounts, bonuses, etc.).

But yeah, the whole digital downloads revolution will still rely on retailers, which is why I reckon the PSP itself isn't going anywhere any time soon. I would happily bet that the PSP will be around until at least the end of the entire PSP's lifespan (PSP Go included), which considering Sony has only announce the Go, isn't any time soon. And even then, I would bet cold, hard cash that the "PSP2" will have some kind of removable media that can be bought in stores.

redesigns,bundles,price drops.etc.it is to last 10 years if they can.while still launching and introducing "new" hardware.

ps1 followed this path-10 years of production.102 million.

ps2 is following this path-9+ years of production.it will hit 10.already 140+ million.

ps3 is going on 3 years and selling 10 million on average as sony wants.they want it to last 10 years.already 23-24 million.

psp is going on 5 years and has already sold over 50 million.they want it to sell another 50 million.

why?

so that they can say all their consoles sell 100 million each.it's rather obvious.

the PSP will last for quite some time as long as development keeps up like it has this year.

over the past couple of years the PSP has really been a sleeper over here.

But alas, it is Playstation-Hating season again! Sometimes I feel these gaming "journalists" think speaking out against Microsoft or the Xbox 360 would be like speaking out against the mafia!

IMO the PSP will last as long as Sony would like to support it for, which if you look at the games still coming out for the ps2 and more importantly the ps2 still selling, that could be a very long time, possibly even after the psp2 releases(If one does release).

The UMD will probably be somehow redesigned / updated somehow, maybe in memory size or something...but it won't dissapear =)

Because it's basicly giving the finger to game retailers in that they won't profit from the games, but still are going to sell the console.
Since retailers like GameStop are always selling games ridiciously overpriced, and choking the games market by peddeling the same used games over and over again.
I say it's a well deseved fate.

As for the lifespan of the psp... I mean, it's been almost 5 years since it's debut. And many, many games for the psp were crap in the beginning. It's only now that real quality games for the system has begun to pop up, and with the Go comming out soon maybe it be a big hit.
At any rate, I have no doubt that sony will follow through on a 10 years life for this system as they have with the others.

it's still alive? that's pretty good for a system with no games.
