Rumour: Project Phoenix (Xbox 720) and the X-Engine

Gamezine: 'Microsoft's Project Phoenix, the code name for the next Xbox, could have something to do with the rumoured X-Engine.

Yesterday we brought you the rumour that Microsoft had not only sent out a new Xbox 360 development kit to developers, but had also included a new X-Engine to make the most out of the system.

Today we bring you a little bit of speculation on Microsoft's Project Phoenix, or what many of you might have called the Xbox 720. The project's early technical specs have been sent out to select developers (who are then matching them on PC) and an interesting feature has been tested.'

Interesting let the speculation begin...

RIP Michael Jackson....and my condolences to the Jackson family.

Wow, I still can't believe it.

I'm anxious to hear if micro will confirm or deny these rumors and if so I'm interested to hear what dev's think about this new "X engine". Interesting but for now just speculation.

^^ I Know !! R.I.P Michael Jackson. Still cant believe hes dead.

>> On-topic, this does seem a little early, the fact they are already giving out specs to devs suggests a launch time of 2 years or less.

Since ps3 specs were given to devs like 4 months before launch lol.

"Today we bring you a little bit of speculation on Microsoft's Project Phoenix"

Speculation and rumors, what else is new.

really duh6189d ago (Edited 6189d ago )

X-Engine is for the 360(as they said from the leaked info) and was given to devs earlier this year and lets leave it at that. Speculation about the X-engine being universal with future consoles is not RELEVANT right now.

"Despite our source being adamant that Microsoft had put together an engine for Xbox 360 developers, we are personally under the opinion that it is instead"

^^ X-engine is Skynet and will be sending machines back in time to kill Shigeru Miyamoto

It takes atleast 3 years to build a game from the ground up. Most likely 2012 launch.

Minute Man 7216189d ago

but SEGA should drop the MoonWalker Arcade version on PSN & XBL

kcdude6189d ago

R.I.P. to Farrah Fawcett as well as Michael Jackson.

Anyway, I'm not ready for a new Xbox.

really duh6189d ago

This article isn't about a new Xbox coming soon or much further down the road.

FamilyGuy6189d ago

Yet ANOTHER name for "rebirth" just like Natal, maybe this is Natal related?

Syronicus6189d ago

Isn't the story about the Phoenix one where it has a 500 to 1,000 year life-cycle? Near the end of which it builds itself a nest of myrrh twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again?

Just reading that would explain their understanding of certain failures of the 360 and hopefully they develop a console that runs less hot and has fewer failures.

Don't get me wrong, I just thought that the use of that name seemed a bit odd considering the state of affairs the 360 has been through.

tonsoffun6189d ago

In all honesty..... I think I'm ready for a new x-box.

It isn't that I don't love my 360, I really do, as with all my other consoles..... but I can deal with a new generation....

Tito Jackson6189d ago

They always end up being lies.

Proxy6189d ago (Edited 6189d ago )

I can see the cartoons now. The Phoenix rising from a pile of dead 360's.

I've chosen PS3 this gen, but I'm hoping the next X-Box does well. I may grab one and catch up on all the 360 games I've missed.

Beast_Master6189d ago

Will it have Blu-ray? They need something bigger than DVD9, plus it is to easy to rip off. I am guessing they will have the Natal packed in that way they won't have to worry about developers not wanting develop for it.

really duh6189d ago (Edited 6189d ago )

8 disagrees?

http://www.gamezine.co.uk/n...

"Despite our source being adamant that Microsoft had put together an engine for Xbox 360 developers, we are personally under the opinion that it is instead" (They edited the updated update of the original article allowing the speculation to seem credible)

The leaked info from the insider source said the X-engine was for the 360 and was given to 360 devs earlier this year. Project Phoenix is speculation that has nothing to do with the leaked info from the insider source LMAO @ the 8 disagrees.

Who cares! Just keep giving me great games right now on the system I have.

Perjoss6189d ago

seeing as the 360 has (had?) overheating problems, pheonix does not seem like a good name, even if it is just the 'codename'.

Persistantthug6189d ago

Remember a PHOENIX may burn up, but it will always rise from it's own ashes.....

That's certainly an improvement on XBOX 360....wouldn't you say?

:P

really duh6189d ago

WoW how did such fanboy comments not get deleted?

Omega46190d ago

"The potential is that the next Xbox will not only run Xbox 360 games, it will improve their performance and graphics (think the PS3's smoothing and filtering of PS2 games). "

That sounds pretty sweet, even though it wont be coming in a long while

Unicron6189d ago (Edited 6189d ago )

Indeed. I always wished that newer consoles would really push old games to even greater levels. I'm not really worried about PS3/360 titles performing better... but original Xbox? Gamecube? PS2?

I'm curious about this new tech, if true, as games are designed with very specific architecture in mind. Some level of emulation would have to be going on. Either way, I don't care HOW it's done... seeing games like God of War (hell, even Gears of War!) with 16x AA would be a godsend.

Ever see FFIX on PC with faux bump mapping? Or FFVII with cel shading? Amazing stuff, so far sadly ONLY seen on PC. Bring it to console!

edhe6189d ago

It'll need the power to put out high framerate stereoscopic 3d gaming for all titles.

trancefreak6189d ago (Edited 6189d ago )

I just got a 360 so not to soon :) but when ever it doed arrives it appears ms is getting its high end production tools ready for devs which to me means that the games should shine from launch then forward IMO.

lol I hope this is true. Probably not.

This forwards compatibility on Xbox 720 rumor has been up in the air for quite some time.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
