It's an OK list. Don't really care though, since it's clearly only considering horsepower: polygons, lighting, etc. Art direction was obviously not a factor in their decisions. Not that these 5 games have poor art direction, but none of those 5 would be in my top 5 if I was considering the overall visual appeal in games as opposed to what looks like it pushes the hardware the furthest. I think Folklore & Valkyria Chronicles are in a tie for what I'd call the two most beautiful games to look at of this generation.

And soon there wil be screams of bias from the 360 fanboys and statements of how the list is bullshit and from the PS3 side there will be cries of, "No sh1t, we knew the PS3 was the best already!"

People will twist this however they see fit, but the list is fairly accurate in my opinion, but you could debate the graphical quality of a lot of games and say they are the best.

Seriously, why was it necessary to put a "Top 5 - Best Console Graphics"? We've already seen the games so we can judge for ourselves. Articles like these bring nothing but flamebait and hits to this site.

I'll admit I did hit the link to see what HIS top 5 were, so I am kind of guilty lol. By the way I would replace Gears 2 with Mass Effect.

I know they wanted to seem politically correct and please both sides but the lack of GT5 on that list is a joke. RE5 is a place holder to me as it's multiplatform.

Wow I can't believe some one said Uncharted shouldn't be on the list while a game engine with no games made on it should be included. No doubting though a list like this is always subjective but if you've played Killzone 2 then you gotta admit graphically it is head and shoulders above all other console games. The lighting and effects are just outstanding, particle effects that interact with other on screen objects, smooth animations and real time ray tracing, that is not present in any other console game as the processing power required to pull that off is immense. Truly outstanding and deserves to be No 1.

Gears of war 2 looked stunning while you're in the lake fighting that monster and when you're going through that burning city.

Killzone 2.. incredible lighting, particle effects, physics and enemy reactions to being hit..

MGS4 - still probably the best character models i've seen on a game.

Uncharted, great art style.. but i personally think it is starting to look a bit dated, good thing uncharted 2 is close and looks incredible though.

I personally believe while LittleBigPlanet has a great art style, its graphics on a technical level are really underrated - the high res, detailed textures that are thrown into that game with the realisitic fire effects and ALL that physics data being thrown around, that is pretty special.

So yeah, i think i might of put littlebigplanet in there above Uncharted.

Using those games in the list, i'd put them in this order:

1) Killzone 2
2) MGS4
3) Gears of war 2
4) Uncharted: Drakes fortune
5) RE5

But if i were choosing the best console graphics, i would replace a few of those games with others.

now they should so a top 5 games (not graphics), i bet only 2 there would make in the top 10

Single player was great. My best part where i think were the best times that had the best graphics were.....in side the worm....and the fish monster.

agree with the list EXCEPT mgsolid4 apart form the cut scenes this game is nothing special imo and there are a lot of multi platform games that beat it graphically cod4/5 for one.plus why no driving games in the list the 360 version of race driver grid is defo the best looking driving game this gen espicially considering its superb damage modelling etc.i own both consoles and the only ps3 exclusive which is marginally superior than any game on the 360 so far is uncharted1/2 imo but this has a lot to do with its bright colorful settings not the usual grey of k2 /gears.

LittleBigPlanet has the best textures of any game out there. I think it should be in the top five. Just my opinion.

Gameplay wise i hated every game on that list except for uncharted.Ps3 exclusives do over power 360's in graphics but graphics dont make the game. I cant wait for uncharted 2

uncharted is one of those games where screenshots wont do it justice it looks much better in motion because the world is so incredible nates animations are beautifuly motion captured,trees and foliage are just stunning to look at because they shimmer fluently in the wind , stone textures just look magnificent and did i mention the water effects yes this is the 1st game when the character actually looks wet after swimming personaly i feel uncharted looks better than killzone 2 because uncharted uses organic enviroments and these are much harder to do than urban enviroments its the best looking console jungle game without a doubt.

Ratchet and Clank ToD could have made that list as well as LBP

What has the time frame got to do with how the game looks and if it aint technically amazing esp then what game tops it from a technical standpoint ? Oh and it's easy to say COD engine could have been better if they got the time blah blah...but we can say that about any game, the point is none of them are. And Killzone is not the only game with a big budget or long Dev time.

Gears looks good yes but the game is not as technically advanced as Killzone 2. Whether you enjoyed one more than the other is irrelevant Killzone 2's graphical features are more advanced than Gears. And in a list of graphical games which this was, time frames and development costs and how much profit was made are mute points. Lists of best graphics or best game or best gameplay are always subjective and largely based on peoples opinions but the technicalities of game engines is not subjective and thats why Killzone 2 is the most graphically advanced game on consoles to date.

Development time doesn't count because this is a list of top five graphical games, pure and simple. Which are the five best graphical games out today. How does development time even come into this, do you judge everything on how long it took to do and not how good it is ? Of course not. You form an opinion over graphics by the graphics themselves if it took a year or four it's irrelevant. I'd much rather have something take longer and be more advanced than quicker thru the door but lacking those special touches.

They had to put GEOW2 on that list so the 360 fanboys wouldn't jump on them...... because Sony firstparty titles are graphically superior in every way.

Good lis no doubt about it. The funny part is graphics aren't that important to me. Physics and animation are far more important to me to make a game world alive. In that departement the 360 gets totally raped.

Although RE 5 is not a game that shows great development effort, just some tricky techniques to show photo shots with annimation. Every single movement is prerendered and while looking amazing is not worthy of toping Gears 2 (which had zero lighting effects and dead environment but whatever 360 games have the benefit of the doubt).
KZ2 is top notch with the character models and A.I.. The lighting effects and particles etc make KZ2 a worthy game console grapghical powerhouse

Funny how they always show the cutscene pics on MGS4 instead of actual gameplay pics. I seen it, I played the game, beat it and was unimpressed.

Gears of war 2 and Resident Evil 5 beat the crap out of MGS4 and Uncharted for graphics. Metal Gear Solid 4 had pretty good graphics but Uncharted wasn't anything special.

Killzone 2 is debatable. If it's frame rate wasn't so low so often, I'd say it has excellent graphics, but the fact is, you can't enjoy the graphics when the frame rate dips so low. The textures are detailed, the characters are detailed, the cut scenes are gorgeous... But once the game starts chugging, you don't notice any of that.

some people are blind i must say that but if you add uncharted 2 to this list then you need to add god of war3. i dont see any game on 360 that deserves to be in the top 5.

except that RE5 was only the demo, and I agree. Uncharted and MGS4 kind of trade off for me.

People often argued that graphics doesn't matter (when it is convenient for their line of argument). However, good graphics don't exclude good gameplay (those games speak for themselves).

At the end of the day, I would rather game on a console with the possibility of both best graphics and great gameplay, than one with the possibility of achieving the latter only.

Killzone 2 no question still king of graphics, turn off the HUD and OMG - it looks amazing.

Uncharted, Looks great vibrant graphics, a little screen tearing wouldn't be my number 2.

MGS4, Cutscenes look amazing but I will admit the gameplay graphics are lacking and have lots of low res textures on the environments.

Res4, Models look great, but environments are bland I still think Devil May Cry looks better than this game.

Gears 2, a good looking game no doubt, good textures around, still nothing close to the technical beast that KZ2 is.

Other games that should be on the List - GT5, COD 4/WAW, Ratchet and clank, Wipeout HD (the 60 fps of all these games is makes them look better in motion than any screen or video)

Eh on Uncharted. I'm so over that games graphics. As you can see if you read my user review from a while back here: http://n4g.com/Reviews/PS3/... I gave the game a handy 9.5 for graphics. But since then, I have awakened, and have realised, they very nearly suck.

The problem is with the textures, particularly rock/brick textures. They are massively over stilized, even to the point that they look cell-shaded. The forests look ok when your in them, but how bad to the plam trees look from a distance? They reminded me of the original Far Cry, but on closer inspection, Far Cry pipped Uncharted. Character models are undoubtedly among the upper echelon of console graphics.

The ground looks pretty blurry, upon respawn textures take several seconds to come into focus, the fireball effect wouldn't look out of place on a PS1 classic (I suggest you compare the two, the difference is slight), 2D water, o, and I loled at this, when you are in the church towards the end, light beams come through two windows on opposite sides of the building. What were they thinking? Also, that cool teselation effect you get of water looks really bad, and almost as bad in U2. Yet another thing, soft shadows anyone?

And finally, back to folliage. Why is everything the exact same, fake looking dull green colour? every single rock has a think layer of blurry moss on it, the grass could have twice as many polygons and still be pointy enough to stab someone with, the trees react linearly to wind.

And one thing non graphics related. What is up with the final level? What is fun or fair about being shot at by a guy who can't miss you and can't be killed (until you get uptop obviously?

In summing up, Naughty Dog should sack there art department, if you want to make it look realistic, why go and make it look so painted. It appears they have managed to fix the appalling particle effects of U2, but as I recall, the trailers for Drakes Fortune had been fidled with and given nice particle effetcs. For the people that think this list is a joke, then I would like to see what your idea of a list would look like. There's a lot of people who dislike this list, but not very many that are willing to put their own ideas in. I personally think the list is dead on. In my head, this is exactly what my top 5 would have been.

The list is reasonable. I am into graphics so I pay attention to this quality in games. I also own hundreds of games. I have played all of the 5 games listed. Based off playing these games on my Samsung 52 inch 1080p hdtv, I think the order is dead on. I think the top 3 games listed are unquestionable. The next 2, resident evil 5 and gears 2 are debatable in that one can easily substitute other games for them on this list. I think some games are criminally overlooked when it comes to visual fidelity....Ratchet & Clank Future: TOD, Resistance 2, Dark Sector, Mass Effect, Call of Duty: WAW, Fight Night Round 3/4, Motorstorm 1/2, MLB 09.

My future list would be:

1. Uncharted 2 (visuals speak for themselves)
2. God of War III (Come on did you see the begining of the demo when Kratos first looked at helios on his flamming chariot...amazing)
3. Killzone 2 (The best combination of graphics and technical performance...i.e. effects, animations, etc)
4. Heavy Rain (the most realistic graphics ever)
5. Lost Planet 2 (textures look amazing)
