Motion Controls - Sony and Microsoft's True Intention

From HDWarriors.com

Why are Sony and Microsoft going through with their new, extensive, and undoubtedly expensive (in a relative to Nintendo's current situation sense) motion control plans? These are not companies who like wasting money. There must be some rhyme or reason to it all right? There is.

atleast sony showed some intentions of making it work for "hardcore" games unlike MS with natal.. it doesnt detect finger or wrist movements how are you gonna play a shooter with it? and natal wont replace a racing wheel for real driving games..

natal=shovelware ala wii, i dont know what the hype is all about

Product6175d ago

"atleast sony showed some intentions of making it work for "hardcore" games"

What games in the demo shown were hardcore?

*This is an honest question not to get anything started

doctorstrange6175d ago

Well they didn't show any real games, but in the tech demo they showed the possibility for FPS and RTS games, which are generally pretty hardcore, as well as sword fighting etc.

N4g_null6175d ago

doctorstrange when was FPS shooter shown? You are not talking about the tank are you? Please say no... That did not show us any thing.

DasBunker6175d ago (Edited 6175d ago )

it was a water gun or something like that.. for FPS

EDIT:
@product

they simulated how the motion controllers will work in a FPS with a golden water gun..was that so hard to understand? youre just playing dumb or trying to imply that it means nothing..

Product6175d ago

"atleast sony showed some intentions of making it work for "hardcore" games"

"it was a water gun or something like that.. for FPS"

???

Sangria6175d ago (Edited 6175d ago )

Sony showed several things: the tank, the water pistol, the lamp, the shield / sword / mace...
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
Edit: (i love getting disagrees when i only say FACTS)

doctorstrange6175d ago (Edited 6175d ago )

It was an fps, but as I said, a mini-game

Edit: yeah, dunno how people can disagree, Sony did show an FPS, FACT. I'm not saying that that is good or bad as that would be an opinion, no I'm just saying pure hard fact, sigh.

chaosatom6175d ago (Edited 6175d ago )

You could move with the controller possibly, and shoot people with arrows.

It was focused towards the more mature audience, and I think that's what makes it a hardcore game. Also, I think the graphics were very detailed and world build around that would certainly make it a more hardcore, oblivion type game.

Gr816175d ago

A tech demo is somehow better than something in the here and now, with great games here and now to boot? Get real. You're talking about motion control FPS' yet I bet you didn't play Prime 3 Corruption or plan on playing The Conduit that rely on motion controls. Or what about Red Steel 2, which is coming bundled with M+. I guess you're too hardcore to play WSR which if you watched Nintendo's conference, showed you jumping out of an airplane and having complete control.

See, these here sir, are NOT tech demos, these are actual GAMES, out now or very soon. Have you played Tiger 10 with WM+? That came out like 2 weeks ago. Virtua or Grand slam Tennis?

I hate to say it, but after the M+ showcased with WSR archery, the sony motion "demo" really seemed..well kind of lame. It was like "we just saw this not 2 hrs ago with GAMES being played, and now you are going to wow us with tech demo's? really?"

Sad thing is, some folks were wowed. Ironically it was the same people who hate(d) the Wii and motion controls until their console of choice decided maybe they better implement them, even though you know, 2 yrs ago it was a fad. Unreal.

chaosatom6175d ago (Edited 6175d ago )

There is a world of difference between SD and HD. GRAPHICS matter and the fact that Sony's online service is better than Wii's online service can open up even more oppourtunity to make online games.
Also Sony can use the eyetoy mixed in with the motion control.

So sum everything up (compared to wii)
-- Graphics.
-- The use of Eyetoy for like microphone or chatting.
-- A pretty good online serivce.
--Of course, more precsion.

DasBunker6175d ago

lol aurius..

atleast sony demostrated the archery with enemies not just shooting at a target like in WSR that i bet is the best that game can do ... wait and see what sony has prepared... dont be afraid im sure by then PS3 will have a price cut and you casuals will be able to afford it :).

im done talking about this.. standard motionless controllers FTW LMAO

thebudgetgamer6175d ago

i think what they showed lends itself more to hardcore games. i like the idea of natal but at the same time i don't want to be pantomiming driving a car.

:)

ChickeyCantor6175d ago (Edited 6175d ago )

" tleast sony demostrated the archery with enemies not just shooting at a target like in WSR that i bet is the best that game can do "

So because the design of the game is about to hit a simple round target( hence the name archery) means it can't do more than that?
Your rebutal is complete BS.

Logic failure? you need a firmware update.

O for your information i own a PS3, yeah try to tell me that im poor and can't afford one untill the price is down...see how that works.
Its simply amazing how ignorant people are.

onanie6175d ago

As mentioned in the conference, Sony is not denying the casual appeal of motion controllers, but at the same time, it recognises that the "gamer's game" needs more precision than what is available on the market. Nintendo recognises it too, hence its M+. It would only be fair that they are both heading in the right direction, at least for me.

JonnyBigBoss6175d ago

I agree less with the fact that Sony showed it for hardcore games, and agree more with the fact that it will just work better with hardcore games. I can't imagine a single hardcore game that will be fun or work well with Natal. Halo or Gears of War? No way. A racing game? Absolutely not. However, the PS3 motion control really could work great with God of War 3 or Heavy Rain. Realistically, I see it having less success prior to launch but more success afterward. But that's just my observation.

The_Beast6175d ago

i hope your not that stupid it was the golden desert eagle, IN THE TECH DEMO GO WATCH IT

Product6175d ago

@fadic4
I was just messing but the fact of the matter is you really think Sony is entering the motion control market to make hardcore games?

The_Beast6175d ago

jack t said it can be fully compatible with the games out for ps3 right now, IT doesnt have to be for hard core gaming, it can be for any game

xxBATTLECATxx6175d ago

natal will probably launch with the 200$ xbox a bunch of get-old-quick shovelware/kiddie games and its gonna fall flat on its face. if microsoft is good at anything its ripping off gamers, using the money to gain leverage, ruin gaming, and copying other companies. but theyre also very manipulative if they release just one "hardcore" game using natal its gonna get so much praise from the press that every xbox fanboy will squeal "tehhh saaaales! AAA! Sony is dead to me!" and everyones just gonna eat it all up and once the smoke has cleared everyone will see how poor their judgment was and they just handed out a bunch of "10s" (halo 3) to a mediocre game, were fooled as to just how gimmicky natal is, and STILL be waiting for alan wake.

Gr816174d ago

Am I the only one who smells the hypocrisy going on here? Really? HD resolution is what is going to make GAMEPLAY better? Wow. Sony attempting to get the hardcore unlike Nintendo? You guys need to stop drinking that kool-aid..and quit sipping the Sony sauce. The ONLY reason Sony and M$ are taking a step towards Motion Control is because of the Wii's unprecedented success. How do you get more precise than M+ sir? Its about as precise as anything can be at this point. Play Tiger 10.

I'm surprised Sony or m$ fans are even interested in Motion Controls. Hell, two yrs ago its a fad, so are we conceding that Motion Controls are not a fad? I'm sorry, but I'm not itrigued by the software...wait tech demo either companies showed, it wreaks of "Me Too-itis"

I'd respect some of you fanboys more if you hated Motion Controls b4 the Wii and continue to hate them once your console of choice decided to implement them. But instead, just call me a fanboy and try to marginalize me, but don't attack the argument because when your rebuttle is "hardcore games" and "more precision" and "HD resolution" and of course "fanboy" then that is beyond weak.

dragonyght6175d ago

@product i could count at least 4 there was horror rts, fps and sword, shield and arrow demo whitch scream oblivion

Product6175d ago

i could see that, but i dont think that is why sony created motion controls....if you catch my drift.

ChickeyCantor6175d ago

" natal=shovelware ala wii, i dont know what the hype is all about "

But the Wii showed that too...so how is natal then destined to be the Wii?
(and please no "fanboy" nonsense, im just asking...many people seem to ditch off the Wii but motion plus did many of those things you mentioned)

The Great Melon6175d ago (Edited 6175d ago )

Personally Natal looks far worse than what the wii can do. The wiimote doesn't really restrict developers to doing only one thing. Natal removes you from the controller the way Microsoft advertises it (although it is possible to use it with a controller). The Wii even without motionplus looks to be a better product to me than Natal. I think half the excitement about Natal is from Microsoft's ability to "sell" the product.

interrergator6175d ago

i hope to god they dont leave the hardcore audience bcuz of this ill be dissapointed

The Great Melon6175d ago

From what they showed, I have a feeling Sony is trying to capture the hardcore audience first and hopefully bring casuals in at the same time.

ChozenWoan6174d ago

MS is the only one to state that they really plan to focus more on the casual market (E308), which might explain the massive losses of major hardcore 1st party dev studios.

Sony's had this tech for a good part of this last decade and they recognized that the camera alone is only good for getting the casual gamers. They basically gave it a go with the eyetoy, but due to the market being so hardcore centric at the time it didn't make much of a splash (at least here in the states).

Sony's been working on making the motion experience rewarding for both the casual and hardcore gamer. They were also planing to wait until next year to debut this tech when they would not only have a finished product, but also games to be released in time for the holiday shopping season. Yea, they where caught with their pants down when this E3 became "MotionFest", but lucky for us they had on clean boxers.

Speaking of Boxers, I'm sure Sony's system will work great with all games from boxing and other sports, FPSs, Rock Band (Live and Unpluged where your in the game literally lol), PSCs (Play Share Creates), and not to mention new genres that are sure to spring up. Being the best of the Wiimote+, Natal, and DS3; Sony's system will be best of all worlds. Serving both Hardcore and Casual gamers and delivering unparalleled quality and entertainment.

LevDog6175d ago

Well at least the pedophiles will like Milo..

Im not a big fan of motion controls.. Wii Ps3 or Natal.. Its for casual gaming only.. But Sonys intrigues me because they have always been about quality and variety.. You wont the same waggale games like Wii.. I mean the Tech demo showed more potential then all the Wii games combined..

Motion controls just dont do it for me I guess

akashifire6175d ago (Edited 6175d ago )

Motion control is for the casual only? No way. Motion control gives us the opportunity to play FPS without having to deal with dual analog sticks. That's not casual, that's innovation. There are other genres where such an innovation is prone to revolutionise the way we play games.

All the Wii games combined? So the Sony's motion controller tech demo was better than say... Super Mario Galaxy? (Which btw remains as the highest rated exclusive this generation)

Product6175d ago

"Motion controls just dont do it for me I guess"

You havent played Tiger Woods with MotionPlus yet then.

Gr816175d ago

Is sports game of the year, period. As for the rest of that nonsensical post goes, Waggle? M+ killed waggle, and not all waggle is bad RE4, as someone mentioned Galaxy. Hell for me my favorite single player game on the Wii is Metroid Prime 3 Corruption. Talk about a gamers game.

LevDog6175d ago (Edited 6175d ago )

Sorry I play real golf.. Video game golf isnt my thing.. FPS ya PS3 already had something like that.. time crisis was it? Thats cool for a bit, but for everyday use? Nah.. but then again im not 12.. So I guess ill like more adult games..

No, the pedophiles will not like me.

(my name has nothing to do with skynet(milo))

Product6175d ago

@ Levdog
I play real golf too(pretty good aswell) but how can you play real golf at night?

TruthbeTold6175d ago

is that it's about as close to real golf as you can get without actually going out there on the course. in some ways you can actually work on your real game by playing it. It's rather amazing.

LevDog6174d ago

HAHAHAHA you cant work on your real golf game with tiger woods.. And yes you can play golf at night.. There are a couple night courses around where I live.. cute lil kiddies

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle18d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg23d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree23d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai23d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.
