Sony Spills More PS3 Motion Controller Details To Devs

Kotaku: Sony Computer Entertainment reached out to its development partners today, getting them up to speed on the new PlayStation Eye-powered motion controller tech it showcased at E3 2009. It also expanded upon the details provided at the show.

The PlayStation 3's second motion control endeavor is slated to launch in Spring 2010, Sony Computer Entertainment reiterated to developers today, arriving with a "range of first-party and third-party content." SCE pitched the new controller as capable of functioning "with any games across all genres from casual to core."

This is gonna be so freaking awesome. I cant wait to see what devs come up for this tech.

Greywulf6200d ago (Edited 6200d ago )

We saw all working demos at E3 for different types of games. Strategy/fps/tps.

I cant see any more functionality down the line that I didn't see at e3 for game development. It was pretty impressive and the 1:1 response was sick.

Everyone is pretending motion controls is the new way, but lets see what developers actually leap out and make a MotionRPG/Shooter. Because all developers this generation care about, and its sad. Is $$$. $$ isn't in motion control games unless you're nintendo. Its in DlC packs for the same shooter we have been playing since the second one. or a sequel.

If developers were trying to pioneer, they would have done so with eyepets technology, which pretty much does most of this already.

I am hoping released games like Killzone 2 are able to utilize it. With how precise I am hearing it is, it sounds like it would be one amazing experience.

yesah6200d ago

all that crap on the devs.....musta made em smell awful

Raz6200d ago

The number of PSEye games released to date is abysmal. Nothing new has been produced for it since launch, and the existing offerings are bland, generic and unimpressive.

Besides, the Sixaxis offers a helluva lot more precision than waving my hands around like a goon.

I wish Sony success, and I'll be watching future developments with the PSWand, but I'm not holding my breath. Unless they get a strong fiscal response right off the bat, devs aren't going to make games for it.

FamilyGuy6200d ago

Boxing glove peripherals, with the ball on them, to track movements for ANY fighting game.

Milky6200d ago

It will only take off if they advertise it as much as possible, even get some celebrities in a couple of adverts lol.

The potential is just so great. Don't let it fade away Sony.

Sarick6199d ago (Edited 6199d ago )

Each of the wands doesn't include 1 analog thumb joystick I think it'll be a failure. I just can't see it working with only triggers. It needs a thumb analog stick in case you want to have directional and camera control.

Think about it. If your able to control the the wand what would control your walking movement in a FPS? If you was playing oblivion how would you walk forward run move left to right etc.

Also a speaker and new rumble tech would be nice.

*SNIFF* I smell great potential.

Come on Sony, pull this off correctly, I can see this being successful.

Sarick6199d ago

The wands they showed weren't complete. If they neglect on features at launch it'll make the product less enjoyable IMHO.

It'd be nice to see 1 thumb hybrid analog/digital stick on each wand and a built in speaker for added effect. Hope they don't forget rumble.

PirateThom6200d ago

I think the thing here is that Sony kept it simple, but it really works.

The only goal is to make games for it, which is where these things tend to fall down.

Big European studios Carmridge/Liverpool must be spearheading this. Those two studios both canceled Gateway and 8 days to focus on Eyepet and other casual projects like Home. These two big studios have been very quite lately. Whatever happened to Eye Toy?. From what i have seen, Eyepet is the first of many string of games that Sony will custom made for the PS3 Eyetoy/Motion controller that Cambridge and Liverpool will be responsible for.

I think Sony are turning these 2 studios into another Santa Monica where they will just mainly focus on R&D in game dev tech for other devs to use. In this case it would be dev tech for motion controller games.

I am sure Sony learned a few lessons with the PS Eye last gen and i agree with you that the software must be there but also just as important is simplicity, application and offcourse price.

What we learned from Nin in regards to motion controllers is that in order to succeed. Motion contollers must be cheap, easy to use/pick up, applicable and most of all fun to use with games out of the box to use it.

When Sony release this controller i hope they bundle it with a midevil game where you play a knight in a tournment which includes events such as archery, sword fighting, joust etc.

ExgamerLegends26200d ago

now i'm sure they're gonna announce a game at TGS that's compatible with the wand. I hope you get two wands when you buy them.

watch the whole thing, its a lecture of the guy that created the eyetoy, the PS Eye, and the motion controls now, after you watch it, you will be enlightened of what you seen.

ExgamerLegends26200d ago (Edited 6200d ago )

-_-

Can you summarize for us?

Edit: @ below

Yea, well...

saint_john_paul_ii6200d ago (Edited 6200d ago )

its too much information to digest by solely word of mouth. if you watch you would understand what they have been working for the last 6 years after the launch of the eyetoy.

you would also realize that they had been experimenting on 3d cameras before Natal.

ExgamerLegends26200d ago

that demo at 1:05 just totally kills Natal...I'm sorry, MS better do some serious damage control to keep that vid from leaking to the press. Cuz if the see it, Natal will be the biggest laughing stock of this gen.

Shuya6200d ago

Wow that's amazing that the guy had so much foresight into the future of games, what he showed there how ever many years ago it may be was pretty much the meat of both Sony and Microsoft's motion control demos at this years e3.

break out demo
head tracking
3d space tracking
sword demo
the fire spell demo etc

all running on ps2

great find

saint_john_paul_ii6200d ago (Edited 6200d ago )

please dont give me the credit, it was the N4G User myothercar who found it, give him the credit

BTW, if it weren't for Phil Harrison pushing this man to do wonders with Camera Tech, not to mention move him on up in Rank, we probably wouldn't see all what is going on today. The man was a visionary guy. he loved things that were creative and original. Shows How Sony thinks for the Future as a company in General.

The Great Melon6200d ago (Edited 6200d ago )

Watched the video and saw them replay his motions after the half pipe thing and realized that's what Nintendo did with Warioware however many years later. Hopefully the wand will be successful, they have spent many years thinking about the possibilities.

nycredude6200d ago

After that video I am officially hyped for motion controls on the Ps3! Give me Demon's Souls motion control patch and I'll be in heaven! Or hell!

Sarick6199d ago

I don't normally comment that I add bubbles. That really was informative. Kudos

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle42d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
