Modern Warfare 2 to get online subscriptions

Future Call of Duty games could come with an MMO-style subscription service, granting subscribers extra options and early access to map packs. That's according to a mysterious Activision survey doing the rounds on Destructoid, which mentions a CoD service that would "enhance the multiplayer experience and provide exclusive access to a group of gameplay enhancements."

I hope their kidding, I mean their fanbase is huge, but they must be full of themselves if they think people are going to pay subscriptions.

this is a fvcking joke right??

Their going to sell like 14 million copies of of this damn game(at least). They don't need to milk it.

If they have some premium online content then they need to give it to us, we payed for it when we dropped $60 on their game.

evrfighter6191d ago

well you guys know how the pc community will take it. what about u console gamers?

INehalemEXI6191d ago

sounds like something actiblizzard would do.

gambare6191d ago

This will remain as rumor, it's not possible they ruin a great online experience with this kind of thing

siliticx6191d ago

Anyone has a weird feeling of deja-vu?

Proxy6191d ago

CoD games a good and all, but nothing special about them.

Generic game with subscription fees is trumped by generic game with no subscription fees every time.

Headshot816191d ago

They must be joking, wouldn't be too bad for ps3 owners, But this is going to hit x360 owners the hardest. Paying for internet service, paying for Xboxlive, paying for COD:MW2, paying COD:MW2 subscription service, then paying some more for add-ons.

Anon19746191d ago

I'll still buy the game, but there's no way I'm shelling out for a COD subscription service.

ChampIDC6191d ago

I don't see what the big deal is. It sounds like it's going to be an optional subscription with bonuses for the suckers out there. It's not like you have to pay to play the game. Plenty of PC games already do this, and it works great for them.

TheIneffableBob6191d ago

Those PC games are MMOs, and subscription fees are natural for MMOs.

Fees for an FPS would be a first, I think.

GameGambits6191d ago

The ONLY and I mean ONLY condition where I would PAY to play a FPS online is for dedicated servers. In no other way would I willfully give you cash to play a dime a dozen experience online for the same laggy BS I can find in other games.

Seriously I'm surprised game devs who want to have dedicated servers haven't started to charge their customers already. Dedicated servers are the best way to make your online experience have a giant cut back on the bull sh*t that goes on online. Think what Gears of War 2 would be like with dedicated servers....

V ii T aL6191d ago

I dont think IW would go through with this, but if they do im definitly not buying. Halo ODST, Uncharted 2, KZ2 will do for my shooter needs this year.

This is exactly how you drop the ball.

JL6191d ago (Edited 6191d ago )

lol Agreed Gump. This just screams Failed in my opinion. For whatever reason I never really did get all that into the COD franchise myself though.

and all this just so you can get a few perks and early access to maps that you still have to pay for on top of the subscription, which early access doesn't make all that much sense to me cause that means an even more limited number of people that you will be able to play on those maps with til they make their official release.

PyReX-6191d ago

There games are good, but not good enough to pay to play online

mrfastback6191d ago

they must be confused, i think they mean for 360 they already are used to paying for that kind of service.

ElementX6191d ago

Since I don't pay for PSN, I wouldn't mind shelling out a couple bucks a month for this service provided that A) I get hooked on the online matches and B) the content is premium and worth the money.

My problem is that there are so many single player games coming out throughout the year that I can't sit down night after night and play online matches. If I can't get my money's worth, I won't pay for this subscription.

TrevorPhillips6191d ago

Modern Warfare 2 shouldn't get online subscriptions

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle32d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde39d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy39d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga40d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199240d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga40d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman39d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

blacktiger40d ago

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box40d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion39d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7240d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7540d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit40d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14940d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7740d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
