Don't believe Steven Spielberg when he says games can't make you cry and the lack of a controller will lead us to a more emotional experience,I know plenty of gamers that teared up during one of FF7s biggest moments as well as MGS4s ending.

Ironically enough, these same gamers don't care much for Spielbergs films.

GWAVE6177d ago

Pretty much, go play the Metal Gear Solid series (and take the time to understand it), and then play the endings of MGS3 and MGS4. If it doesn't affect you, then congrats, you have no soul.

Oh, and ICO and Shadow of the Colossus /thread

forthegamergood6177d ago

Indeed. To be honest, none of Spielberg's stuff has made me cry past the age of, what, ten?

Shadow Flare6177d ago

These are the 4 times in gaming which has got to me emotionally:

-When agro falls off the bridge in Shadow of the Colossus

-The final fight in MGS4 between Solid and Liquid

And Final Fantasy VII still gets to me after the billionth time playing it:

- When Red XIII learns the truth about Seto his father and that he's not a coward

- Aeris death

Coincidentally, i'm playing FF7 again since it was available on the psn store, and i've just done the aeris part not 1 hour ago. So to any developer who says games can't make you emotional, its probably because they can't do it in their games

edgeofblade6177d ago (Edited 6177d ago )

I don't think games should make us feel anything plotwise. I'm a stern believer that story detracts from gameplay. I like to get my kicks from games like Shadowrun. Complete crap story... but dramatic mechanics that make me feel dynamic emotions. And the next time I play it, the "plot" of the match will be different, unlike an RPG that will be almost exactly the same.

If you want story from a game, play an RPG. If you want a GOOD story, skip the game entirely and read a damn book.

Though, GWAVE, I will admit that the story drove MGS in ways I didn't expect. I can respect MGS in that way.

Not seeing her die, but the emotion of Cloud afterward.
He goes from being a jerk of a character, who's only about going after Sephiroth and in his own World---

Then, he sees her die. And you feel his pain, he says something to the sort of, "She'll never smile, or laugh again. Why did you do this Sephiroth"

Only for him to reply something similar to, "You're a puppet, Don't pretend like you feel pain"

I'm sorry, but that is just the most powerful emotional experience I've ever had with a game or movie.

Shadow Flare6177d ago

Yeah totally agree. It's the part afterwards as well. Cos i've just played it, its still fresh to me, but cloud is talking to the other 2 team members and he's says something like, "Sephiroth has taken everything from me. My hometown, my family and now Aeris. I can never forgive Sephiroth. But....there's a side of me i don't understand. The side of me that gave the black materia to Sephiroth.......if you hadn't of stopped me, Aeris might have been........ That's why i should quit. But....i can't. I must carry on. I have to settle the score with Sephiroth....." It's just the best game in the world. This along with Metal Gear Solid have better stories then any book i've ever read

Shadowstar6177d ago

Spielburg's films provoke an emotion in me; unfortunately, it's often annoyance because he's done something stupid again.

Second ending of AI: you suck. (The first one was actually making me cry, but then the second ending started and blew the whole movie for me.)

robotnik6177d ago

I CRIED playing these videogames

MGS3
FFIX
Zelda 64
Shadow of the Colossus

The Silent Hill 2 true ending made me feel really bad, you know, the suicide ending.
Games can also make you feel hatred and fear, Silent Hill is an example of terrific situations.

And since I have played such a long list of games I don't remember right now, but well, videogames are art, just like music and paintings are.

i have a new comer here i am talking about infamous and i will tell you why first i began playing as the good guy and that brought up the felling of goodness is just felt great being good and the people made my smile when they toke pictures and there where some sad moments in there but nothing to cry about.now i am playing evil and there was a mission where you could choose to fry a guy and steal is his stuff i really really really felt bad when doeing sow hmmm was just thinking these emoton games are all sony exclusief thnx sony

Dark General6177d ago

Can already make us feel joy and happy with a good experience or something heartwarming. Some people get scared from horror games. I think making us feel sad isn't too far away to be achieved. I can think of at least one moment when I genuinely felt sad (In MGS4 *SPOILER* when Raiden saves Snake from the tanker). I think games moving forward need to not just become more expansive in scope and budget but also subject matter.

PrimordialSoupBase6177d ago (Edited 6177d ago )

Anything on this planet can make you feel something.

A well written but poorly conceived article. Mindless utterances and colourful words don't make an intellectual; only through deep thought and reflection can a great thinker be bred. And there isn't much of either here.

Tarasque6176d ago

Sure if your not a biased sony fanboy cause they have no feelings. And i knew it would only take a comment or 2 before a sony D@#$ would make a fanboy comment.

Rock Bottom6176d ago

I kinda felt sad when what's her name died in FFVII, but I was 12 year old back then, so I thought now that I grown up, no game could make me feel that way...

Until I played Ico, and then SotC did it again, and the Last Guardian seams more than capable of doing it yet again.

shocky166177d ago

I certainly felt sad at the end of disk one on Lost Odyssey, did anybody else? :(

Forrest Gump6177d ago

Was it the need to pop in 4 more discs that had you tearing up or did something happen in the storyline at the end of disc one?
(serious question,I haven't played the game yet)

shocky166177d ago (Edited 6177d ago )

Just troll anything Xbox 360 related? Be a gamer, not a fanboy.

PSWii60 fot life.

Oh and to answer your question, the end of disk 1 was very very emotional.

Forrest Gump6177d ago

How's about you read my comment again,I clearly ask if there was anything that happened in the storyline to make you emotional.

And what you call 'trolling' is what we call 'valid criticism',if you can't stand the heat get the f*ck out the Kitchen :)

forthegamergood6177d ago

Lost Odyssey was indeed sad, though sadder was the fact I got to disc three, then lost my saved game. Crushed.

iamtehpwn6177d ago

The End of disc 1 was terribly heart touching.

edgeofblade6177d ago

Gump, that was trolling, thanks to the snarky comment on the front end.

No one complains about FFVII...

Sevenoutoftenchenko6177d ago

Forrest Gump used to post as Zeus Lee and Nathan Drake. He isn't even a PS3 fanboy, he just posts pro-PS3 comments for bubbles in order to make more comments.

He's the internet equivalent of a Big Brother/Pop Idol contestant. He needs others to validate his existance, this is his 15 minutes of fame. Trolling is the only way he can feel important.

Just ignore him!

Who cares if the first 9 comments on every story are from him. Without the attention, he will leave soon enough.

Myst6177d ago

Yes, I think they can and the driving point for most of them are generally the Sound tracks that play at the time to.

For me this was one that gave me quite a few emotions, and I'm sure some may recognize the sound.

italianbreadman6177d ago

Absolutely. Music is a very key component in emotional response to images.

forthegamergood6177d ago

Definitely, italianbreadman is completely right. Music really does evoke far deeper emotions than visual imagery can on its own.

kazan6177d ago

wow thank you sir for the link that was so awesome FF7 FTW!! :)

Myst6177d ago

welcome Kazan, yeah Imeem has a lot of tracks on their from previous fantasies and such, but they get taken down pretty fast as well. Only a few remain every now and then until someone puts them back up. Not to mention a problem sometimes of having the full song cut to just a 30 second sample :/

a story driven game that focuses on the charcters and their back stories let the gamer get attached to the characters which in result lets the gamer feel emotions toward the character. Weather it is happy when something good happens to them or sad when something bad happens to them. their have been only 2 games this gen where I felt real attachment to the characters and actually cared about them and what happens to them, Folklore & Valkyria Chronicles.

PS. - Steven Spielberg is a effin idiot and should not be commenting on games or gaming and the emotions they invoke in people.

Ravage276176d ago

Armageddon,it is a really good and epic movie :D
ok i'll admit i watched more crap movies than good ones, but i usually follow my friends :P

Let's see,games which made me emotional T_T...quite a list:
FF7,FF8,LoD,MGS1,FFX,ICO,MGS3 ,SotC,KH2,MGS4

TheBand1t6177d ago

MGS4 made me cry manly tears.

forthegamergood6177d ago

That said, MGS4 was more film than game, so it's tempting to be an ass and suggest that it was, in fact, an emotional movie experience ;). That said, I'd not have minded had FFVII had more cutscene time than gameplay, but then it'd have had around 150 hours of cutscenes...
