The evolution of gaming graphics

TechRadar writes: It can be tough to remember, but over the last 30 years, we've moved from simple shapes floating around black screens pretending to be spaceships, all the way through simple sprites, full-screen cartoons, full-motion video and early experiments in 3D, and into blisteringly detailed virtual worlds that we can explore at will.

It really does make you think about how far graphics have come. And you know what the best thing is? they're only getting better. :)

50CALheadshot6172d ago (Edited 6172d ago )

thank the ps2 for pushing the gfx and audio to a new level.

you will all be thanking the ps3 once this gen is done.

if it wasnt for sony, we would be playing ghey wii games and we would think blurry, washed out graphics are next gen(perfect dark/prototype, etc)

pc is going the way of the dodo with torrentz and pirated software. consoles are more mainstream as far as gaming, AND it doesnt cost 3-6k to play some games

moses6172d ago (Edited 6172d ago )

You, Mr. 50Calheadshot, should not speak of things you do not understand.

jerethdagryphon6172d ago

this kind of stuff is inteesting and worth knowing

XxSpiiKeZxX6172d ago

50 cal is right
Sony first introduced games that were targeted at a mature level and they brought upon a lot of killer games that soon shaped the hardcore games we see today
ofcourse if Sony hadnt released the psOne sometime theres goin to be a time where one will risk it but Sony took it and made a change in how we view gaming

Tony P6172d ago

No, 50 cal is not right and neither are you. Both of you need to read the article if you haven't and learn your gaming roots.

Devs didn't suddenly start pushing the limits of available tech in 1994.

games have come forwards graphically so much its incredible...

To think that in 1995 the ps1 released, and withing just 5 years the ps2 launched with its best looking games like MGS3 and god of war blowing away what the ps1 could do.

And now weve got the 360, ps3, and then crysis on the PC which with a good compunter creates images which look so close to real the line between real and virtual blurs to the point you cant tell the difference.

Think how much graphics have come on sonce the ps1, about 14 years, now think what we will have in 14 years time....

The-Director6172d ago

I think there will be a point in time "soon" where graphics just won't matter because it become so realistic it can't get any better, the next big things will be AI and controllers "something like Natal and Sony motion controller but much more advanced", i believe that will be the future of gaming, very advance AI, and very involved gamer experience.

Syronicus6172d ago

I hope to see developers moving towards a greater interest in differing art styles. You can have an amazing game that look crazy and still be considered awesome graphics but so many devs fall into the trap of desiring to beat out the next guy in photorealism. I'll take a great art style over realistic graphics that fail.

Good read! First game that really had me drooling over its graphics was final fight in the arcade. When 3d sneaked into our games in form of virtua fighter and virtua racing i wasnt really that impressed.
Yeah i m old ;)

caseh6172d ago

Not that old mate, I remember when Final Fight rocked my world as well. Capcom had an amazing art style for the old CPS-1 arcade boards, and same again for the CPS-2 genersation. *Sigh* the good old days.

commodore646172d ago (Edited 6172d ago )

yegads!

I remember getting excited about the graphics on the commodore64, then the Amiga, then the Arcade coin-ops, then the Playstation1, then the saturn, then the PC.

The progression in computer games has been nothing short of astouding, over time.

In my lifetime i hope to see a truly immersive reality like the holodeck in modern star trek.

oh yes. With technology like Natal arriving now, the future looks promising for truly immersive experiences.
bring it on.

Syronicus6172d ago

You didn't just equate Natal to the Holo Deck on Star Treck did you? Seriousely?

commodore646172d ago

oh for god's sake!

Read my comment again you troll.

Syronicus6172d ago

You wrote:

Immersive reality of a holo deck... Natal arriving and the promise of an imersive future? Did you even bother reading what you posted? It looks pretty obvious to me. So you think that Natal will help usher in virtual reality?

Don't get mad, just asking.

commodore646172d ago

*sighs*

wow. see, i asked you to re-read, but clearly you are not getting it.

The key word you need to pay attention to is: 'future'.

"With the arrival of natal now, the FUTURE(!) looks promising for truly immersive experiences."

In other words, technology like Natal (not Natal necessarily) opens doors to future development that will eventually (in the future) result in immersive experiences like holodecks. (in the future)

If you re-read my original post without the fanboy filter it might help you to comprehend.

Syronicus6172d ago (Edited 6172d ago )

Reading through your past post history makes me laugh, especially when you call me the troll. How do you troll a general thread about graphics?! lol

I should have checked your profile before... Ignored by 30 people here? Yikes... Makes sense though considering your post history here. You can't even answer a simple question without calling me names. Pathetic.

commodore646172d ago (Edited 6172d ago )

*big sigh*

You read into my firts post with fanboy goggles on.
Then I asked you to read my post again.
Then I explained the gist of it, to correct your comprehension difficulty.
Then you get all offended?
Then you go all psycho on me and check my comment history?

What is your problem exactly?

My first comment was PURELY about the exciting future of the gaming industry.
How about you take my comment at face value, instead of making incorrect assumptions.

That would have saved the trouble of this entire exchange.
It really is up to you, dude.
