Rumor: Xbox Natal is Actually Microsoft's Next Console

Sam Kennedy: "Earlier this week gaming blog Kotaku quoted Microsoft's Shane Kim as saying that the launch of Natal, Microsoft's new controller-free motion control technology, would be as big as the launch of a console. Not surprising. That's because Natal is going to be a new console."

Forrest Gump6220d ago (Edited 6220d ago )

This means Microsoft are going casual, and we all know how 'successful' they've been in the casual space :)

KingKionic 6220d ago

I thought about it and....

It doesn't make sense. Ms would need to acquire new tech to keep with the times.

Hallucinate6220d ago

hell that didnt stop sega with the onslaught of addons that should been seperate consoles

RememberThe3576220d ago (Edited 6220d ago )

Not really. The Wii is a bunch of old tech. The 360 is space age compared.

And this make a ton of sense. The casual market has proven to be very lucrative, and from a business perspective this seems like the best course of action for MS's new console.

The problem lays in leaving the entire hardcore market to Sony, which they would be more then willing to monopolize.

In all honesty, if I was Microsoft I'd go casual as well. Nintendo is just making too much money to ignore.

Megaton6220d ago

Guess that's what they meant when they said the 360 is 'forward compatible'.

PtRoLLFacE6220d ago

i think M$ is going the same way as onlive, it wont be surprise if later on ur streaming games on xbox live, that means PC quality coming to 360 (just an opinion)

Ju6220d ago

It makes a lot of sense, if they are serious. For a couple of reasons.

If Natal has to be successful, then it will be only if it is the one and only input controller for the console. Means, what will happen with the current 360 if that's the case ? Will it migrate ?

The second thing is costs. To make Natal cost effective, the HW which drives the add on needs to be integrated into the console, the camera needs to become a dump peripheral. AFAIK, Natal contains a custom processor to process the image. Not feasible as a peripheral for current consoles, IMO, because to expensive.

But if they do, I am curios if they will keep the 360 to cover the hard core market and introduce a second one to target the Wii audience. It could work. Why not have multiple consoles on the market (not what MS did in the past, but why not this time).

Sarcasm6220d ago

Didn't MS advertise project Natal to work with all current 360s anyway? So why in the world would they just do a new console.

Jaces6220d ago (Edited 6220d ago )

God I hope not.

ThanatosDMC6220d ago

The thing is, if they did pull it off and take in the casual market that the Wii had/has and be able to keep them satisfied with casual games. There's a ton of money to be had with little cost but high net profit.

However, leaving your hardcore gamers will really piss them off.

TheZippo6220d ago

Has it ever occurred to some of you that maybe Microsoft is going to go for both casual and hardcore? They've made too much money off of the hardcore gamers to abandon that pile of cash.

TheRealSpy6219d ago

doubt any of this is true. but if it is, count me out.

in a way, this would be good news though. this would mean the hardcore developers would likely go back to PC development. which means we'd stop seeing gimped quality, dumbed down titles made with consoles in mind.

TOO PAWNED6220d ago

We all saw this coming, at least "US" with brains. 2010 is when MS launches new console, 360 is outdated, admit it or not, your choice. Thank God for Sony or we would be ripped apart by MS...

Forrest Gump6220d ago

Was thinking along the same exact lines, the 10 year plan for the Ps3 is definitely one of the reasons why consumers continue to adopt Playstation hardware.

DevastationEve6220d ago

next xbox in 2011. don't bullsh*t around, ps3's 10 year plan is going to be cut down with them trying to compete with the next xbox, which will be more powerful and force sony to either lose another year (and lose install base to micrsoft's new hardware) or get out the ps4 by 2012 and just cash in on 4 years of ps3 prime time, since ps2's stellar showing continued to go into ps3's first year and launching at $600 hindered initial sales.

microsoft's keeping sony on the short leash. by marketing cheaper more cost efficient and no less powerful systems they can force sony to rethink their strategy. it's the same goal as nintendo, only microsoft is actually building you a machine that can compete toe-to-toe with the ps3.

leyego6220d ago (Edited 6220d ago )

so your saying a MORE powerful machine is what we need? give me a break. whats a more powerful machine gona do for u? more guys on screen? better graphics? better physics?
the xbox has some kick ass graphics already why would u even care for better graphics? a little bit more power maybe just so u can output to 1080p and upgrade the graphics a bit more but not a lot more then that.
geez look at forza. its up there when it comes to graphics. how much more realistic do u need?

back on topic tho. if this rumor is true, then MS will NEVER sell me there console. thats what we need, more casual games for soccer moms and grandmas.

ill stick to my 20-40 hour games with explosions and such thank you.
the last thing i need is to stand while i play.

happyface6220d ago

will ps3 soon be the weakest console after Xbox Natal and Wii HD release?

Forrest Gump6220d ago

Depends, can the Natal run Mass Effect without pop-in?

Tiberium6220d ago

It doesn't need to. Mass effect 2 runs better than the original without any pop-ins and more detailed character models.

Sonyslave36220d ago

so guess sony purple dildo is ps4.

da720izcumin6220d ago

thas funny...
purple dildo...lmao
if ms had made a purple dildo for me to play games on, i would disown them and never play the console....
cause i aint gay (nothing wrong with dat, but still)!!!!!!

Forrest Gump6220d ago

If Natal is set to launch as a separate platform altogether, does this mean we're looking at a $400+ launch price?

Seems so.

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde63d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy63d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
