Reason #3: Surprises

Indeed both parties had surprises, however some had more surprises than others, Microsoft thought they shocked the world by unveiling Natal, but in all honesty any one with half a brain could guess that some sort of motion controls will be shown by both Sony and Microsoft. MGS:Rising coming to 360 was also a globe-busting announcement, or was it? considering all the pre-E3 hype surrounding MGS coming to 360 I wouldn't say so, this was also quite expected. Kojima's site countdown even ended at Microsoft's Press Conference - put two and two together and you get MGS:Rising.

So who really had the surprises? Well to put it bluntly, Sony. Did you know about a Final Fantasy 14 exclusive to PS3 before E3? or did you know anything about Rockstar's PS3 exclusive 'Agency' which will apparently utilise the Blu-Ray in a way no other game has? didn't think so.

They showed more games, this is a straight up simple fact, Sony displayed more exclusive games on the show than Microsoft, ranging from GT5, to Uncharted 2, MAG and the epic conference-concluding God of War III, it's undeniable that Sony brought the games home, and after all isn't that what E3 is all about primarily? games, games and more games.

Sony also showed a greater variety of games, from ModNation racers to action games like God of War III to more sophisticated/mature themed games like Heavy Rain, Sony simply had the better, more varied exclusive games.

Actually gametrailers crowned sony the winner not in the bonus round but in there 2 podcasts. I dont listen to micheal pachter that guy knows nothing about video games.

Sony did pretty well. They deserve more credit. Games upon games were announced.

I would love to visit news for gamers and not talk about the prospect and potential of motion controls for the next 2 years and why or why not Milo is A gamers dream come true but I live on earth and I play real games.

Its not a hard desicion for people like me to not spend $350 dollars on xbox and xbox live to play halo reach. I have a funny feeling alan wake is a timed exclusive as well.

Twitter and facebook is probly the biggest joke to me because as soon as i open my ps3 browser and the playstation logo loads up I have access to twitter and facebook and never used it in 2 years.

The comparisons and similarities are endless with the final edge being that ps3 online is free.

Of hearing who won this that, the real winner is all us true Gamers, all have good games coming out. Motion controls are cool to some not to others. The end result is there is lots of awesome games coming out on PS3 and 360 and one or two on wii. Gamers win in the end with the quality of games going up from competition.

I believe Sony had the best show. Games are what E3 is all about and Sony presented alot of them compared to Microsoft. The games on Microsoft's conference where mostly multiplatform as well. MGS Rising, Tony Hawk's Ride, Modern Warfare 2 all on other platforms as well. Sony shown a few Multiplatform games as well. I like that they showed a clip of what is coming with multiple games. That was great. Uncharted 2 stole the show though. GT 5 is looking better and better. Now with Nascar and Damage + Weather and customization coming. Others were great as well. Nintendo showed off a bit of new games, but nothing that makes you wanna go grab a Wii. Sony's Motion control is great. Don't know how it fairs vs. Motion Plus for Wii, but I believe its on par if not more accurate. Not entirely sure though.

I think Microsoft could of did alot better if they brought in their Games 4 Windows Live games. Many of them are multiplatform as well, but a few are Microsoft owned. Like Halo 3 PC. Rumored now for a few years. More than likely under Gearbox's development team and ready for release in 2009/2010. I was really disappointed Microsoft is waiting to show its Games 4 Windows Live stuff. I have high hopes for Halo 3 PC to kick start Games 4 Windows Live into a new direction. A much better direction than the gutter it is in right now. An outside client maybe. Something like Steam or something you can log into and browse around instead of starting specific games to log on and see stuff.

They didnt mention WKC Twisted Metal Agency DC Universe all exclusives that are known to release next year. We still dont know if 8days and other projects they put on hold are back in production and MS released no AAA games all year and then shown only 2 AAA games... Splinter Cell which looks very nice to me and Forza.

In the Uk we have all of the sony development studios still to announce there latest work, alot of chatter of secret games from BBC lol there is alot of games for ps3 owners and am pretty much skint haha!

One of the reasons given was surprises......but they only mentioned two........which in my opinion, are not really surprises. Nobody is really shocked that FF14 is exclusive to ps (and that could change in time), and there was already a buzz about a Rockstar exclusive. Secondly..."motions control", well if you read the paragraph...you already see how horrible of an attempt that was.

Yea As much as I dig MS , they had style and flexed it, however, people always say its about games, and all of sudden they act different now, and say oh they had this gadgets but SONY brought the games, and games are what sales are about, they finally are going to do what MS did in 07, Bring the Games

I was always curious, what does the winner of E3 get?
I keep seeing all these blogs and such saying who won E3 and such so it must be important, so what does the winner get? Also does the winner get something from each person saying they won or is it a collective of how many wins they got before they get their prize?

It's not just some fanboy saying they won without giving any reasons (like the xbots love to do).

It's easy by the way when you've got 20 or 30+ internal studios and your competitor has 3...

That's why I never understood MS strategy. Sure, they can survive some years by giving the console for free like they do now, but they can't win until they buy STUDIOS and make GAMES like Sony decided to do. Gamers will always buy PS2s, PSPs and PS3s since that's where the GAMES are.

Here's why how can you beat Microsoft's Project Natal? I mean, this thing is the sh!ts! Full body motion tracking, voice and facial recognition, no need for a controller! When I saw the trailer that Microsoft showed, with all of the potential uses, I knew that they had won E3. Nothing that Nintendo or Sony would do could beat Natal! I understand that Natal is currently in prototype stages, and probably won't be available in the marketplace for a good year and a half, but when it does come out, so long as it delivers on the promises it has already made, Natal will be a huge success for the industry! Microsoft also chose the right games to show off at their conference, like Alan Wake, ODST, Halo: Reach, L4D 2, and the announcements of Facebook and Twitter integration into the XBOX 360! Overall, an astounding victory for Microsoft! Even I was in awe of what they announced!Sony how the mighty have fallen!

Here's why Sony spent most of their press conference talking about and demoing previously announced games. MAG, GoW III, Uncharted 2, Assassin's Creed II, the list goes on and we already knew about them all! Then they announced the already leaked PSPgo, so virtually no surprises there for anyone. Granted, they did announce a release date and price (Oct. 1 for $249) and they did announce a few new PSP games (Metal Gear, Resident Evil) but most of the PSP games they talked about were simply updates on games previously announced (GT PSP, LittleBigPlanet, etc.). Sony's supposedly big announcement is that they are working on a motion controller for the PS3, and everyone in the audience was in awe of it's tech-demo capabilities. I don't know why, because this has already been announced; it's called Wii MOTIONPLUS! Honestly, I'm getting really sick of Sony ripping off other companies ideas.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
