Can Nintendo Get the Hardcore Back?

yes the hardcore that sticked around stayed for the nintendo games

all they gotta do is put LOTS more effort and shine and they will come back some of them

if microsoft or sony went all casual for a while then went back to the core everyone would go crawling back as well

but in the end do they even need em?

I can't speak for everyone, but they wont get me back. Mine is collecting dust and will probably stay that way. The Xbox 360 and PS3 is blowing them out of the water in terms of games. Plus not really a fan of the Wiimote for anything but sports games.

Agreed. I think this generation they have stepped too far away from mainstream and hardcore gamers. lack of horsepower and substandard online performance are the final two nails on the coffin here for a lot of gamers.

Let's face it; anyone who considers themselves hardcore ANYTHING likes to get the best gear. You snowboard a lot, you probably have a nice board. People who bike a lot generally get nice bikes. Gamers who game a lot get decked out PCs and PS3/360's.

I still keep my Wii for games like the Mario series and (hopefully) Pikmin 3, but unfortunately past that I only really drag it out at parties.

You are only making a "bit" sense.
We don't play games because we want the best gear, we play games because we like them for the core element of it : GAMEPLAY.
Yes believe it or not, There are also fun games on the Wii.

Gamers wanting the "best", is a subjective matter as "best" comes from a personal point of view.
Seriously, i still play old GBC games, and it got nothing to do with wanting the best "gear" out there. ( obviously a Gameboy color is not the best gear ;) )

I get what Chaz means but I don't really agree with it. I think of it this way. It's the same with movies, it's not only about content. It's about the technology behind it and people want the best available.

However I'm a firm believer that technology is not the priority when it comes to movies or games. I also think the Wii has advanced greatly with the technology and it is forwarding the industry. It offers a new way to experience a game, in the same way that 3D would.

What the hell are you on about. Nintendo showed more first party hardcore stuff than casual stuff.

As I said below they also have 3 hardcore games lined up as well. Dynamic Zan, Tact of Magic and Line Attack Heroes.

What the hell do you expect?

Miyamoto also confirmed that Pikmin 3 and a new Zelda are in development.

EDIT: They also shown a trailer of Sin and Punishment 2.

Spoony and sidar these are PC gamers I'm sure of it now. I mean they even put down the snes. They obviously don't like mario bros which is pretty damn hardcore, or platforming games which require skill.

Seriously nintendo can not get these gamers back because they are not console gamers any more.... Only a PC gamer would call the Wii a toy when it has all of your hardcore memories on it from the past. It's obvious that the console owners are not coming to this web site dude to the mods not keeping the peace.

LOL New super mario bros is going to sell like crazy! and so is galaxy!

But seriously, i have said it before, there are more complains than GCN sold back last gen.
So im not sure who is trying to win who back.

Also i don't think people should depend on Nintendo so much if its about the Wii.
Third party developers should kick in too.

I think it depends on how stubborn the "hardcore" are about the Wii. If, for example, someone is a Dead Space fan, they might want the Wii for Extraction. Red Steel 2 is going to be the premiere sword swinging adventure game to use a 1:1 motion controller.

Then of course we got a slew of other Japanese RPG's, adventure, and other games, three HVS titles on the way, plus some of Nintendo's own like Metroid: The Other M and Super Mario Galaxy 2.

The funny thing is the hardcore do not believe that there are games that are unsatisfied with the crap they call games. They sure as hell are not going to waste time talking to people at this site about it either.

The ones that will switch over will do it this year either because they are waiting of their games to come out on the HD systems or because those games came out and they are bored again.

But some of us are just disappointed with Nintendo.
Personally, I enjoy this gen mostly because of my Wii/PS3.
Its a good combination for all gamers I think. You get your MGS4 and KZ2 but also Zelda, SSBB and SMG.

thats how i feel, this gen for nintendo is basically set in stone to be nothing but peripherals and casual gaming.

Of course i'll buy a new zelda when it gets released, i honestly don't care about mario galaxy 2 and i absolutely love mario games. (I took a week off work when mario galaxy came out, no joke, lol)

For the most part im done with nintendo this gen, i can only wait so long and be disappointed so many times.

I've moved on to greener pastures.

Nintendo will have still kept their most dedicated of fans but those who have left now, won't come back and they won't be attracting sony/xbox fans anytime soon.

Their lack of proper third party support will always hit them hard. Look at EA's and Ubi's lineup for the wii.. with a few exceptions they are literally shoveling what you just know is going to be a 1-3/10 games down children's faces.

Also any hardcore gamer just has to go to their local game shop to see where the wii is at. In the UK at least... the wii section is 99.999% cutesy game covers with games I wouldn't play even if the developers paid me to.

However, I doubt Nintendo really care. They have their crowd who will lap up their own games like a fat kid eating a cheeseburger.

Lets look at E3 for example. They announce MArio Galaxies, NEw SMB Wii, A kick ass Metroid game, and a brand new IP that is an RPG..

But look at the responses here from Sony fans acting like nothing was announced by Nintendo and in the Sony section they are falling all over themselves to get what has been on the Wii for 2 years.

I see someone was even stupid enough to bring up GTA.. GReat point you made there dude.. PSP is not a hardcore platform and never will be. Thanks for pointing out how higher sales of GTA on DS than on PSP means DS is for casuals.. Well you just also said PSP was too. Your ignorance is astounding and you hurt your own company as much as Nintendo with that statement.

Just pathetic really that those fanboys consider themselves hardcore when they are as casual as it can get.

Seferoth..i'm not a sony fanboy but I do dislike nintendo quite a bit.. from that perspective we just think it's a joke really each year it's the same game announcements so when he hear about mario 152 coming out, it's just meh.

I think this is another of Nintendo's problems and one which would probably get me at least looking at buying the wii... each year it really is the same announcements. Each year it's the Nintendo fanboys coming on saying "oo zelda/mario/metroid is going to be awesome I can't wait to play it."

I'm 22 and can remember growing up playing mario and zelda.. for me the games represent some of my favourite nostalgic moments as a child BUT.. i've grown up, my interests have changed and i've moved on.. I don't want to be playing those games anymore.

Hardly have anything to do with eachother. Growing up just means you have to take responsibilities, and act on it as an ADULT, it doesn't mean you have to forget your childhood likings.

People want those games because to them they are good.
And the reason its still made is simply due the fact you have NEW gamers every year.
They aren't making these games just for you and the likes you know.
If they ever make a platformer with different characters, you can bet your ass it would still feel and play like a mario title.

Sure i have nothing against your opinion towards liking a franchise, but seriously "growing up" doesn't even fit it.

To be fair though, they do have games like No More Heroes (2nd one coming), Madworld, Conduit incoming. Just not enough hardcore games compared to PS3 and the 360. It is very obvious that there emphasis is on the casual now, and rightly so considering how many casuals bought the Wii.

I for one though LOVED Super Mario Galaxy, I'll gladly give up playing some of the more "hardcore" games for it (If i had to choose that is). Guns and violence can get old too.

A Sony fan who actually HATES Nintendo is most often a kid who just liked Sony more than Nintendo while growing up.

Senden, if you are 22, that means you were not even a teenager yet when the PS2 came out, and a VERY young child when the PS1 came out.

It isn't exclusive, but most people who HATE Nintendo are from that era. You weren't around during the glory days. You weren't around as a gamer during what were arguably the greatest generations of gaming.

All you've ever known is upping the ante with graphics, and fighting over exclusives.

There's nothing wrong with loving Sony, but hating Nintendo is just silly and short-sighted. This is the first generation where their console isn't a comparative graphics powerhouse. And yet they've added more innovation to Mario and Zelda gameplay than has been added to just about any HD game so far. Unless you think great graphics and more enemies on screen (Tech) is innovation that surpasses the actual controls and approach to a game?

You aren't a kid anymore, but you are a Sony kid. I don't mean that as an insult. I mean that you grew up with Sony as a preference because you were a child during the time when Sony was the new thing.

You may have dabbled in some Nintendo, but you weren't there when Super Mario Bros. was THE SH!T, or even when Super Metroid, Super Mario World, A link to the Past, etc. were. For the hardcore gamer, many of us are definitely frustrated, but we HAVE had some very good games.

Truthfully speaking, if Nintendo's online policy wasn't so gimped I probably wouldn't have bought my PS3 until God of War 3 comes out. Things will be better next generation for the simple fact that the few emerging major elements in gaming that Nintendo is going cheap on will be very cheap to produce then.

As for now, the dust is beginning to settle, and we see that there will be plenty more good gaming experiences with Nintendo, since they are trying harder, and 3rd parties are jumping on board fully. All of that being said, it's great to be a multi-console owner. :)

i dont care wat anyone says they've lost me since n64, the next game im gettin for my wii is muramasa demon blade and that will be the final game till somethin else im interested in is announced.

im sadly sick of mario, only liked the ones on NES and snes, im sick of zelda, metroid, tho team ninja is making new metroid look good, may get that, but mostly there games im sick of, i've seen link mario and samus around since i was born! im 24 in july wtf enough make new characters, new games, no more spin offs,

i wanna see nintendo's old magic again but that wont happen, they've changed.

As silly as it sounds, I know its about gameplay in the end, but I just can't get past the Wii's low resolution graphics on a 52" 1080P screen.

Playing my 360/PS3 and then trying to play a Wii game just hurts my eyes and I want to stop playing.

I guess I'm a graphics nerd in the end :)

Sorry Sidar, bad choice of words. I meant i've matured.. when you mature your interests change.. like when I was 7 I loved power rangers, I don't exactly love that anymore as it isn't appealing to me. I'm not saying mario is childish but I just don't really enjoy platforming games anymore.

And Xander.. I was actually one of the ones who complained about the new halo announcement however this generation alone, there has been quite a few new IPs from both microsoft and sony corners all of which are sure to be around next gen and are good enough to sell consoles.

Well I'm still happy with Ninty, but I guess no one is surprised.

Nintendo can't win either way. Last Gen Nintendo went for a really advanced console and had a whole bunch of new IPs but that was ignored.

Now they can't win because they went with a lowered power console and it geets hate for being successful.

People also complain about the lack of new IPs but then ignore them when they're made. Stuff like Captain Rainbow and Chibi Robo. Nintendo also currently have 3 new IPs in the making. Dynamic Zan, Tact of Magic(with Taito) and Line Attack Heroes(by Grezzo games) but they'll likely be ignored too.

As mentioned above an wit a good point @chaz, altho i don't agree with hardcore gamers, i agree with the fact that gamers who game a lot and know a lot bout games like to have the best of the best, just like other "hobbies/sports/passtimes ", wtv u call it.

The wii is like the powel skateboard you buy with the wheels, bearings and the griptape already on n costs 40€ n runs like crap...

Its good for beginners, but if you are better and have a deeper interest in skating, you'll be getting a +250-350€ board...

If they cater more to the gaming fan, maybe, but the wii won't cut it =/

Well tbh how do you expect people to look at games with titles like captain rainbow? It sounds like a bad kid's tv series. Chibi Robo doesn't sound much better. Along with new IPs, we also want diversity.. Nobody can argue that Nintendo have some of the best developers in the world working for them... why don't they use that talent and create something designed to appeal to mainly older gamers? If the wii had more titles like mad world, I sure know i'd be looking at it.

See here's the thing, hardcore=!blood and gore and that seems what everyone wants and that's not what Nintendo is about.

Rare used to supply the "mature" games and now they're with MS, it's not Nintendo's fault it's the third parties fault.

Even when Nintendo gets third party support people ignore them as well or hate on them because they're on the Wii. Look at No More Heroes and Madworld, Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest coming in the future.

People are choosing to ignore the games that are there, complain and then when the Wii does get hardcore games they don;t buy them.

It's possible. But they'll have to do a lot of work, though.
I play the Wii regularly, but some things that would be nice are:

Bring Disaster. I know Nintendo is scared it might not sell like how it did in Europe, but all they would need to do for a commercial is make some reference to 24. Hell, have Keifer Sutherland in it. lol That'd be neat. Sales would exist...

Fatal Frame IV needs to come here. I think they should re-name as people might be confused that it's the fourth in a series. By making it seems stand-alone, people may not feel alienated about it being the fourth and not understanding things.

Help the third-party. Nintendo, you have much money. You could at least maybe try to help advertise some of the little people so they too can have a chance to shine. It won't hinder the sales of your first party games, definately. Try to make other companies feel important.

Uh...out of tips at the moment. lol

There is no such group as "the Hardcore". If there is then they are broke because they dont spend as much money as the "casual".
Nintendo is the only company that is turning a profit on their gaming console, so why go after this "geek" crowd known as the hardcore?

There is no reason.

Games are in 2 categories.. Fun and not fun.

hardcore games play video games everyday, they are the ones that cause halo to sell 1 mill day 1, they are the ones that hype a game up and get spread its word.

what are casuals? people who play casually, one who doesn't need a game, one who will eventually forget about it as they only play sometimes (casually) Yes they buy the most wii's and ds, but they dont know what games are coming out, what new consoles or handhelds that are coming out or even the exsistance of E3

Nope Nintendo won't even go hardcore. Their are alot of young gamers out their that likes Nintendo and their games sells and reach out to younger gammers. And Nintendo is all about sales and making games that would sell to make a profit.
