Why Xbox Project Natal is a game-changer

The same question keeps popping up: "how can Sony and Nintendo possibly top this?"

Microsoft's E3 press conference started out as a parade of games most people either knew or strongly suspect were happening.

Then, towards the end, they dropped the bombshell to end all bombshells.

2010 is gonna be BIG.

We have Halo:Reach and have no clue what it will be.

Natal is launching and it will have games.

Mass Effect 2

Crackdown 2

Alan Wake

Gears of War 3 is a big possibiltiy....Epic's not only making a XBLA game....they know where the money is.

Lost Planet 2

Rare's game

Gonna be a HUGE year.

MBB6191d ago

Agreed on most of those, but I think some are a little ambitious. I've not actually seen any dates for Natal - I'll be surprised if it launches this generation to be honest.

Gears of War 3 is a certainty for next year, even though it hasn't been announced yet, but we've heard nothing really from Rare. Maybe they're working on the first killer Natal project.

All Time Greatness6191d ago

Natal is confirmed for Fall 2010, google it.

Foxgod6191d ago

Then we may see some wonderfull Natal implementations at next years E3.

All Time Greatness6191d ago

What exactly did I say that's being Disagreed with??

SaberEdge6191d ago

You said something good about the 360. That is a definite no-no 'round these parts. At least among a certain radical segment of the resident population.

TheExecutive6191d ago (Edited 6191d ago )

The problem with Natal isn't the technology but the support it will receive. The reason why the wii works with motion controls is because it forces developers to impliment them. Until MS takes the leap and decides this is THE "controller" to have it is just going to be a better eyetoy.

It is an assessory, nothing less, nothing more. Now, I also have my doubts about Mylo and the AI shown in the press conference. Everything there was planned to create an AI routine. Cool? yes. As cool as they made it seem? Far from it.

Now I will gladly eat crow if this thing turns huge and the tech is very cool, but the next big thing? I doubt it.

MBB6191d ago

I'm not attacking the Xbox, I just suggested that I didn't think all those games would make it out in 2010, particularly Natal.

Microsoft's John Schappert outright refused to talk about Natal release date. I did google it.

Gamertags6191d ago

This years E3 is certainly the most important of all time. In the war between MS and Sony, all cards have to be revealed! Anything that could influence gamers needs to be shown.

It is awesome to see the comment pages blowing up with gamers who are going to buy 360s! That is a great move! Heck, gamers already know that the 360 has the best gaming and this is proven by the sale numbers but now, even the Sony fans are feeling the heat and switching at a greater rate than ever before.

Good Luck Sony, you will need it! We will be watching you.

OmegaKulu6191d ago (Edited 6191d ago )

In terms of games, great lineup for sure, we gona see great things(except that halo spin off)

Facebook, tweet, are not for gamers, and I don't think people will think of xbox as a social networking tool anytime soon.

Now Natal...Awesome and cool looking tech, BUT there are few questions.
First, I have nothing to say about the accuracy of the motion capture, they've done a spectacular job with it, but small latency issue have to be address, hardware resource requirements(how it do outside of the more powerful dev kits & trade off to game performance)

Second, Natal as an actual controller, I just can't see this working outside of wii like sport games, mini games and party games. HOWEVER, this could be best thing ever for RTS games on console.

Finally, we are talking about an accessory, cost will have to be low enough to make its appeal to the public. That will limit the quality of the cam itself, which will keep features like full facial recognition(Milo demo) working only a few feet in front of your cam and TV, not the best distance to play or watch anything.

PS - that Milo demo, scripted AI isn't all that impressive, you can find more advance recognition + AI tech if you look around. And no thanks for the Imaginary Friendz game.

I want this device, hopefully they will make some must have games for this thing.

But i think MS understands that if they want this to succeed they are gonna have to meet 3 requirements.

A: Make a console bundle with Natal.
B: Make AAA games that fully require Natal, and cant be played without it.
C: Incorporate the option to use Natal in other AAA games, E.g, Fable 3, Gears of war 3, Mass effect 2 etch.

green6191d ago

Actually i think there will be AAA games that will require both a controller and Natal to work together to enhance the experience.I mean tactical shooters could still require a controller to shoot and move forward but by moving the controller up down left right, you are basically doing away with the right analog stick.

You the use hand gesture and voice command to move your troops around, detonate and set charges, melee and so on.The potential is just endless and on hearing that Ubisoft are excited about Natal, then imagine what the next Tom Clancy games will be like.

SpoonyRedMage6191d ago

Milo is creepy indeed. It's certainly in the uncanny valley but I think if it can be implemented it's a great idea.

TheExecutive6191d ago

The only thing that can be implimented this generation is planned AI routines. There is no way that AI technology has boosted to any level where interactivity is truly possible.

Take for example that paper that she drew a fish on. That could have been anything. I could have drawn a donkey on there and that AI wouldn't' have known the difference.

gusto6191d ago

The Wii didn't do anything for me, but I am genuinely excited about Natal :)

really duh 26191d ago

Microsoft is so innovative Project Natal is so awesome and i wouldn't be surprised if $ony tried to steal this they are a bunch of Xenophobic Jap thieves.

Microsoft is gaming king!!!!!!

Hellsvacancy6191d ago (Edited 6191d ago )

Besides like Natals gonna take off most 360 owners r fat retarded Americans (my opinions based solely on the comments made by the 360 fans ive met in the Openzone NOT the Gamerzone)

SaberEdge6191d ago

What the f@ck is wrong with you two? You both sound like xenophobic nationalists. "Jap thieves"? "fat retarded Americans"? Damn, if everybody was as chauvinistic and prejudiced as you two the whole world would be constantly at war.

peeps6191d ago

"Microsoft is so innovative "

well it's still cool that MS have this tech, but they arn't the innovative ones... this was tech developed by a third party and now ms has bought the rights. Sony could have bought this instead, in that case would you be saying 'Sony is so innovative'

The company that developed it are.... not ms :)

Hellsvacancy6191d ago (Edited 6191d ago )

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde23d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
