Project Natal: A Recipe For Disappointment

Mark "junglistgamer" writes;

"If the on-stage demonstrations are to be believed then Natal will follow the players movements with astonishing precision. No longer will motion sensing be tied to a specific set of peripherals, instead the body itself becomes the controller. Microsoft clearly believe that this will revolutionise gaming beyond what the Nintendo Wii has accomplished. I would strongly disagree and do not believe that anything the gaming world witnessed at Microsoft's E3 conference will truly change the gaming experience."

im surprised an article like this didn't come out sooner

happened for the psp go minutes after it was shown

wardrox6215d ago

It takes a while to write a good article.

SL1M DADDY6215d ago

And you will see that gimmicks like this do not last. I hope for MS that it does but just looking at the facts, it seems this might be a gimmick that dies out after 6 months of retail.

Information Minister6215d ago (Edited 6215d ago )

I've been a gamer for 20 years, but if motion controls are the future then I will game no longer! I have no intention of waggling my arms around like an idiot to play the new chapter in my favorite franchises.

I'm surprised no one yet had the courage to say "this looks like a souped up eyetoy". On the contrary, as usual (with all things MS) the media is doing a great job at hyping this up like the 2nd coming of Christ! Oblivious to fact that:
a) This will arrive late in the system's life cycle.
b) Most people who wanted motion controls already have a Wii and will probably not spend the money to play the same mini-games on the 360.

table6215d ago (Edited 6215d ago )

I don't see this dying out. It might not take off very well but next gen I reckon this will be all the rage. We will still have our standard controller games but to break into the casual market, every system will look to do something similar. I'm not sure how the patents work for this product but I'm sure big companies like SONY and Nintendo will find a way around any.

SL1M DADDY6215d ago (Edited 6215d ago )

Yeah, I can see it being all the rage for next gen as well. The biggest issue with camera games is the 1:1 ratio of action versus reaction. If they can make it work in virtually any lighting condition then it may have a go but I can't foresee it happening. There are too many variables to take care of for this to actually work and in a big way. I see it as the same kind of stuff we saw last year with the Eye Pet. It may or may not work out but telling from past experiences, I doubt it will work out as well as some may like.

Marcello6215d ago

I honestly think its good idea in theory & M$ seem to have pulled it off to a degree but yes its too gimmicky really. This gizmo is a cross between a Wiimote & an Eyetoy.

There`s no way i would swap my Logitech Driving Force Pro for it thou, no FFB for a start.

I am sure there will be a few games that you will beable to enjoy it with, things like tekken could indeed be fun but pulling off proper roundhouse kicks & such is very difficult & not advisible if you have never done it, especially whilst stood in your living room surrounded by furniture not to mention you will look like your doing very poor chop socky thus looking like a pratt.

As a remote it should be great :) flipping the menu`s & calling the command to play, stop etc should be really cool but it will also depend on its price.

6215d ago
table6215d ago (Edited 6215d ago )

I don't quite get what you mean. yeah its a gimmick and it looks to be a one that will succeed. You won't see games like tekken using this. New games will be made specifically for this product similar to the fun family style games of the wii. It will also be a more affordable product in the future. I can see it doing reasonably well maybe even being the next big thing.

Sayai jin6215d ago

@Information Minister - I have been gaming for over 26 years and I understand what you are saying about waving your arms and stuff. This tech will work if they give the user an option to use it or to just use the control. Also the younger generation (5 - 10 yr old) do not look at games like we did.

All-36215d ago

The PS3 will be getting more motion-sensing technology besides the sixaxis. Soon - all three home consoles will have motion-sensing technologies that do the same basic things.

SL1M DADDY6215d ago

And I will say the same thing. Keep it simple, keep it cheap, and make it work no matter the environment. It's still a gimmick but if they meet this criteria then it has a chance.

The problem is that the Wii is well established and at the moment, the largest group involved in the PS3 and Xbox 360 is the hardcore. These new innovations are meant to bring int he casual but they all already have Wiis...

popup6215d ago

I thought everyone else hated the Wii? Turns out you all want one.

SL1M DADDY6215d ago

I gave it to the one demographic that Nintendo caters to most... My kids.

Information Minister6215d ago

Oh that makes me feel all warm inside.

Dread6215d ago

the double standards of the SDF will always amaze me.

when the sixaxis came out all u fangirls were very happy and anyone who called it a gimmick was laughed at. But now that MS is doing it of course it is a gimmick.

hypocrites.

that said, i would hate if this stupid motion control thing becomes the standard. I love the remote.

phosphor1126215d ago

Not because I don't want to, but because at the age of 15 I was diagnosed with adolescent arthritis. I'm 19, and already my spinal column is compressing, and me being lactose intolerant doesn't help the fact I can't drink milk (for the calcium). I get in pain after standing for more than 5 mins, reason why if anything, I'd prefer the Wii. If the Natal requires you to stand like that, I simply cannot do it.

Ju6215d ago

Its a souped up Eyetoy (well, in my own words I would have said is a "Pimped PS-Eye").

I have about 5 PS Eye games, nice gimmicks and try outs. Something fresh. Try it, leave it, forget it. Done with it. Will happen with Natal. And if its more then $20-$50 nobody will even care to buy it.

Sarcasm6215d ago

The natal stuff looked interesting. But it all depends on how far MS wants to go with it. It will take a lot of time and money on developing software to really make use of it. IMO, that's the reason why the PS Eye hasn't really taken off. LACK OF SOFTWARE. I mean, there's only a handful of titles that uses the PS eye.

If they were to make the PS eye a core part of what PS3 gaming is, as in incorporate it into all the big titles like MGS4, GoWIII, Resistance, etc. etc. Then it would have been a bigger success.

But that's not the case.

As for Natal, it's the same concept. If they can somehow tie it in to the games we already love and make it a big part of the gameplay, then it will be more sucessful.

How about in something like splinter Cell, have a hand to hand combat section requiring you to dodge left and right, and throw specific punches or kicks.

I don't know, the possibilities are endless.

Theonik6215d ago

It's just an improved eye-toy and because of it faces the same problem. You don't have buttons and as we know without buttons you can't shoot or perform anything that doesn't involve just moving your body. Say you are playing a shooter game you have natal replicating you character stance, but how are you supposed to fire your weapon, or perform anything your own self can accomplice Ex:You are playing an action game you have to jump from ledge to ledge how would this work with natal? In the end natal will end up like the eye-toy doomed for casual and sport games forever, in that sense the wii+ looks more promising to have actual games which is what a new system should strive for and not gimmicky party games. At least Sony admitted that the lack of buttons was one of the limits of their design and tried to fix it with their new control.

UnasFortuna6215d ago

I would have to agree with the article somewhat. While the 3D mapping ability of the camera is a leap from what Nintendo offers; it currently does little more than Wii Sports. I for one am not interested in casual games of that nature. The control of the NXE dashboard is nice but a little gimmicky. There doesn't appear to be any fine controls which would be needed in a real game. We'll just have to wait and see what MS does with it instead of bashing their idea before it is even released as we do with every other thing gaming related.

Forrest Gump6215d ago

It's too early to call it a disappointment.

Will it be affordable?Early reports suggest it won't.

Will it be able to appeal to the majority of the 360 userbase? No,one look at the performance of Microsofts previous casual offerings paints a very bad future for this device.

Will it be able to compete with the Wiimote? No.

Foxgod6215d ago

Just like its too early to call it a disappointment, theres no way you can already tell whether it can compete with the wiimote or not.

It would be the first time for an external addon to become a success, but theres a first time for everything.
Nobody expected that the Wii would have such a large casual following either, and look how that turned out.

Shadow Flare6215d ago

I think if microsoft want to get the most out of this thing, they should do a nintendo and make this launch as a main feature of the next console. I think the 360's too late in its life cycle to release this. I think microsoft will have seen how much money and success nintendo have had with the wii and knowing microsoft, they'll go where ever the money is

Foxgod6215d ago

They said it would be compatible with all future xboxés.
Maybe they meant the Xbox NEXT as well.

Perhaps the Xbox Next will come in two flavours, a bundle with the Natal in it.
And one without for the people who already bought it for the 360.

edgeofblade6215d ago

Why are people convinced the 360 is near the end of the life cycle? That sounds like wishful thinking from PS3 fanboys. I think we still have great things coming. As long as the new two new Halo games are good, then keep it coming.

IdleLeeSiuLung6215d ago

Exactly. If anything MS has shown that they got plenty of exclusive games (no, scratch exclusives because it doesn't matter) coming in the near future. They constantly release games contrary to what everyone was concerned about.

This additional controller is just icing on the cake. If it does well great, if it doesn't it will still be copied and improved upon by the two other console makers.

PtRoLLFacE6215d ago

lol it may not work for hardcore gamers but for casual hell yeah

NewZealander6215d ago

hell yeah im going to get it, it looks awesome!

really duh 26215d ago

Please report this article as lame the Sony fanboys try to say something negative about anything that is good and is not on their inferior Crapstation 3.

God bless Xbox.

ssipmraw6215d ago

god shuns the xbox for having a game centred around a gay

ZuperAmazingCooKie6215d ago (Edited 6215d ago )

God plays Xbox 360 and PS3, but God hates Xbox fanboys (but he loves PS3 fanboys). That's why god made them so stupid to begin with (hence the nickname "Xtards").

:)

Montreafart6215d ago

Its non precise and buggy as has been shown by the on stage demo.

And its good for nothing but browsing through XBOX LIVE and playing casual mini shiat games.

Add the pricetag and its a recipe for DISASTER. Bots are clearly delusional if they think MS cured cancer.

In fact, PS Home folding is doing number crunching since day one and has been a tremendous help to the scientific community. The only thing xbox has done, is burn down homes.

Sorry but Eyepet is much more advanced. And coming this year while you wait, wait, wait, wait, wait till GDC, wait till Leipzig, wait till TGS, wait till 2011 to be able to browse through XBOX live with Natal and 200 bucks less on your bank account.

PStu'rd6215d ago

LOL 2nd meltdown in a row

UltimateIdiot9116215d ago

Agreed, and here is one of the tech demo showing why. I can't understand how some thinks Natal is better than the PS3 Eye toy when in reality it's no different.

Eye toy has facial recognition, multiple motion tracking, depth perception, etc.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.
