Lens of Truth: Bionic Commando Comparison (720p)

Lens of Truth writes "Welcome back for another exciting Head2Head battle! This week the Lens of Truth had an opportunity to play Bionic Commando. This Head2Head was made possible by the staff at Play N Trade (Lake Mary, FL) who let us borrow their store copies. Thanks Play N Trade! This is our third Head2Head with a game produced by GRIN. The last two GRIN Head2Head's the PlayStation 3 won, out performing the Xbox 360 in multiple categories. So did GRIN finally get their Diesel engine working at full power on the Xbox 360 or could this be a three-peat? Stick around to see which game was bionically-enhanced and which game was built with spare parts."

Looks like the Xbox 360 has finally hit a wall. Tthe PS3 has been winning these comparison now. Just goes to show you the Xbox 360 is now an outdated POS. Sony will also be the KING of E3 09 this year. Nintendo, Microsoft, and the PC have nothing on Sonys exclusives. Xbox fanboys should now admit defeat and buy a PS3 and put your Xbox 360 back in the box. I need to change my name now to PS3Girl.

jaidek6194d ago

I wouldn't say it has hit a wall, it is just that GRINS game engine (Diesel) is more optimized for the PS3. That is their development platform and they port to the 360. It is the same problem that almost all developers are having...how to juggle time/money and do the port right.

Soul Train6194d ago (Edited 6194d ago )

Doesn't it always seem the PS3 only wins H2H's of $hitty a$$ games? Does the PS3 actually have a multiplatform game worth getting instead of the 360 version? Didn't think so.

LinuxGuru6194d ago

Oh excuse me Mr. Gears of War character, I think your train of dumbass left town without you on it.

evildeli6194d ago

They also did Wanted and Terminator Salvation.

snaz276194d ago

please dont get a ps3... ive seen enough of your comments to know your not someone i want to come across on the psn, i think your kind of attitude is much more suited to the 360.

XboxBoy6194d ago (Edited 6194d ago )

B!tch, get your lazy @ss off the computer and make me some godd@mn eggs

irish-leprecaun6194d ago

you two should get married!! i will do the cermony

Jinxstar6194d ago (Edited 6194d ago )

Soul Train. I can think of a few only because of the extra content/features/graphics and a few other things.

i.e. Bioshock(Content), Batman AA(Joker) and Burnout(Visuals/framerate)(how about that all start with a "B"... I smell a conspiracy =D)

Really though to each his... or her... own

really duh6194d ago (Edited 6194d ago )

One game out of the last 15 or so seems more accurate ok non GRIN games

XBox G.i.r.l(Guy in real life)

jaidek6194d ago

The site is getting slaaaammed right now so I can't quote it. But they do mention SSAO in the article and one of the images clearly displays the effect.

Yokan6194d ago

For reals, these two go at it in every graphic game comparison.

7ero H3LL6194d ago (Edited 6194d ago )

yeah i saw the comparison of all of them, but all three games that they made were not that good in the first place, and their graphics of all three games tumble in comparison to EA's 3rd person multiplat like dead space.

come on they could have done WAY better on the main character model if they would have had "EA" or "UBISOFT" as part of their team.

Man, GRIN has sure been cranking out the games this year. I would say that this is the best one so far. I am enjoying it quite a bit, but now wish I bought it on the PlayStation 3. The frame tearing is quite frequent on the 360. Ah well, still a fun game!

Sarcasm6194d ago

I don't know, but an occasional frame tear here and there is OK by me. It's just if it's like a constant slide show is where it gets annoying.

But It does give the impression that a game without screen tear is more "optimized"

ArthurLee6194d ago (Edited 6194d ago )

Nice win for the PS3. I believe this is the first time a Capcom PS3 game has won a head 2 head on LoT. Good news PS3 fans, the future is looking bright!

7ero H3LL6194d ago

the game isn't running the MT engine that's why.

JOLLY16194d ago (Edited 6194d ago )

The OA (ambient occlusion) on the 360 screens really add a lot of depth to those pics.

XboxGirl6194d ago

If there's screen tearing then Grin should have removed stuff from the Xbox 360 version to fix the problem. So looking better means nothing.

jaidek6194d ago

I agree, the ambient occlusion is a nice feature that they added on the Xbox 360 version. Really adds grounding to the objects. I wonder why they didn't add it on the PS3?

LinuxGuru6194d ago (Edited 6194d ago )

Why don't you grab a screen for me to show there is a lack of ambient occlusion on the PS3 version. I call BS.

The ONLY differences between the two versions are:

- 360 has noticable screen tearing
- Different native contrast levels between 360 and PS3

As far as texture, character model, world, effects...it's all the same down to a T.

And what you think is AO in the stills in that video is actually just lovely painted on shadow maps with higher contrast in the scene. Wow, how amazing!

:/

And just so you know, ambient occlusion has NOTHING to do with shadows. It relates to how light is reflected and absorbed by various surfaces.

Any deeper colors you see and contrast differences can all be affected by color and contrast settings on peoples' wildly-varying TVs.

Contrast and color differences between multiplats being your reason for purchase decision = epic fail.

RudeSole Devil6194d ago

"And just so you know, ambient occlusion has NOTHING to do with shadows" Just goes to show you have no experience in the gaming industry. If you read the article and looked at the rollover images the PS3 has no AO anywhere. Just look at the 3rd image and see if you can see the use of AO in VIDEO GAMES. Oh please use a real OS like Windows, Linux is for Fat Programming nerds.

LinuxGuru6194d ago (Edited 6194d ago )

Ambient Occlusion is not used in this game. Instead, there's a technique used like the one in Killzone 2 as well, it's really cheap and it makes it seem like there is. Shadow maps are painted around and underneath some objects objects to make it look like there's A.O.

Ambient Occlusion is a shading method meant to more realistically portray how light reflects in real life.

A.O. doesn't produce shadows, it produces lighter and darker contrast. There's a difference.

lol and nice try making a stab at my username and bringing your lousy attempt at a stereotype into play.

I'm 6'2" 180 and in fantastic physical shape, mind you.

Also, I use Windows Vista SP2 and Linux. I ride both sides of the OS fence, because I like to stay current on everything.

Edit:

LOL I see you signed into your other accounts and upped yourself and disagreed on my posts.

Aren't you something special!

JOLLY16194d ago (Edited 6194d ago )

I am 6'0" 200 and I do 3d design visualization. There is oa in the game. You should really look at the screens in the article. The ao isn't greatly done, but it does add good depth.

LinuxGuru6194d ago (Edited 6194d ago )

Ok after further research, normal Ambient Occlusion is indeed NOT used in Bionic Commando.

Screen Space Ambient Occlusion is, however.

There are some visual downgrades from AO to SSAO, but at a performance increase it seems.

I guess I was a teeny bit right about no AO because it's SSAO =P

http://www.gamexeon.com/for...

From Engine Programmer on Bionic Commando:

"We use Deferred Shading for calculating HDR lighting in Bionic Commando, this opens up a lot of doors for doing advanced special effects and gives us the possibility to have a huge amount of dynamic per-pixel light sources per frame. Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, Depth of Field, Tone Mapping, Motion Blur are just a few of the special effects we use in BC."

Although, that was an answer to a question regarding the PC version.

Edit: Oh come on don't take it up the butt lol

Anyways, the good thing is that the latest version of the PS3 SDK was updated with AO code, so future forward this shouldn't be a problem! Yay!

JOLLY16194d ago

What do the last 2 letters is ssao stand for? Because you said there was no ao in the 360 version. So if you threw out such a black and white statement like that. I will throw out my own. YYou were not right at all.

ZombieNinjaPanda6194d ago

Seems to me that in a few screens the 360 is darker.

However, the textures to me on both systems up close look like they're..lacking.

Genuinely a poor list. When I read a title like "Worst Male Character Designs.." I expect the author to have some grasp of artistic methods, aesthetics, and knowledge--but here all we get is a few sentences which add up to "dun like the character because they look angsty".

Eilers3220d ago

Prince - Warrior Within
Danta - DmC
Chris Redfield - RE 5
Rad Spencer - Bionic Commando
Remy -SF 3 Third Strike

Not worth a reading IMO

8-Bit Oversights: Games That Should Have Been Included In The New Mini NES Classic Edition

So, Nintendo's got a new mini NES with 30 games packed in.Here's 12 classics they snubbed.

hamzilla3591d ago

It is called rights, and RARE is no longer got any rights with Nintendo. as for some of the others, maybe someday they will be added VC games can be downloaded to it FYI

RosweeSon3591d ago

Rare have got all the rights to their games FYI. The only games rare don't own the rights to are where Nintendo characters are involved I.E the donkey kong games, Diddy Kong racing etc. Hence why banjo is on Xbox ;)

Zeldafan643589d ago

Rare developed but doesn't own Goldeneye 64.

3589d ago
pcz3589d ago

i find it funny that you think nintendo didnt give careful consideration to the 30 games it included in the collection.

any games not included were left out for a reason.

Sitdown3589d ago

Super Dodge Ball was great, but how do you forget Track and Field, Double Dribble, Skate or Die, Paperboy, Bad Dudes, Top Gun, Blades of Glory, WrestleMania, Tecmo wrestling, bomberman, etc

strayanalog3589d ago

Every game should have been included are you kidding?!

slate913589d ago (Edited 3589d ago )

what size are these pixel games? And can they only fit 30?

HisRandomFriend3589d ago

There are probably about 5MB worth of games here. I didn't feel like doing the exact math, but considering these games average from 8KB to 128KB My estimate may in fact be too high. The user interface will probably be about 1GB (1024MB) so I'd be surprised if this thing even holds 2GB, honestly it probably costs Nintendo less than $5 to make one. That being said I'll probably still buy one since it looks pretty neat.

slate913589d ago

Agreed it does look good. Im just being a spoiled american and wishing it was more than 30 games or at least a promise to add future titles

gerbwmu3588d ago

At one point it was reported that the Wii had enough memory to fit every game in the library of NES & SNES in it woth room to spare so I think these 30 games take up even less then your estimates
