We all know the Dreamcast is far better than all Next gen consoles combined in terms of software quality.

It was the perfect console... Shame about the sales though... it was too hardcore for the mainstream to buy it.

RIP

It wasn't "too hardcore". It was poorly advertised. It also relied too heavily on a slew of arcade ports (great for quick gaming fixes), but failed to deliver a wide variety of games like Sony was offering at the time.

They also dropped the ball on securing third party support once the PS2 showed up. Nobody to blame for that but Sega.

Anyway, cool looking controller designs there, but I'm sort of a traditionalist. The old school DC controller was fine, imo.

Yeah it was pretty much the Playstation brand's power, Sega's first party not being enough, and Sega's practically non-existant third party support leading to the end of Dreamcast. Dreamcast certainly had some great games though, especially at launch. I remember getting Sonic Adventure and NFL2K at launch and thinking Dreamcast was the greatest thing ever. I certainly had some great memories with the console (and still do)

The only dreamcast games I seem to remember playing were sonic and crazy taxi at a friends house. crazy taxi was awesome.

The DC was far ahead of its time. Online play, the brilliant memory card, Mouse & Keyboard support, Cross-Platform online play 'Quake III DC vs PC', Phantasy Star Online. What's really a shame was that SEGA was the one behind it, those guys can't plan ahead for sh!t. The day they announced they were going to ditch their console I felt like I got stabbed in the back, they sure ain't thriving now.

ZuperAmazingCooKie6186d ago

And I found a lot of things about the dreamcast obsolete, like its controller, its media and its complete lack of backwards compatibility (or at least provided by SEGA).

I think the Dreamcast is overrated. Not saying I wouldn't like to play the games I've missed, just saying it gets way more credit than it deserves.

Marceles6186d ago

I think it's the most underrated system ever. The only reason why Sega never received much credit for it was because they had a bad reputation with consoles after the Genesis. They did a really good job at digging themselves out the hole for awhile and brought some great games with really good graphics. It even gave PS2 a run for its money a little while after PS2 was released since PS2 was expensive and didnt launch with that many great games other than SSX, Madden, and Tekken Tag. Once GTA 3, FFX, GT3, and MGS2 came out, the price went down, and DVD became the new standard, there was pretty much nothing the Dreamcast could do. RE: Code Veronica, Crazy Taxi, Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Sonic Adventure, Jet Set Radio, Soul Calibur, Power Stone, NFL and NBA2K series, Virtua Tennis, Street Fighter 3, Dead or Alive 2...man the list goes on at how many good exclusive games were on the system at the time, but like alot of people who were waiting on PS2, they just never took notice or didn't care.

Is that a wii mote? Too bad the Dreamcast never took off. Then again, no one did that gen... no one else but the PS2.

G4drake6186d ago

damn you ps2 for killing the dreamcast

Krimmson6186d ago

It wasn't really the PS2 that killed the Dreamcast. Sure it helped, but I feel that it was mostly Sega's doing.

In an awkward way, I look at it like this:
The PS2 and the Dreamcast are in a boxing match. The PS2 is a faster and more powerful boxer than the Dreamcast (having better graphics and plays DVDs). At first the Dreamcast is having the upper hand in the first round or two (Dreamcast being launched early and having awesome launch titles). The PS2 started off sloppy in the fight (low productions). But then the PS2 begins to fight back and starts to overwhelm the Dreamcast (The PS2 gaining popularity from developers). The Dreamcast had a horrible cut-man and crappy coaches to help him through the fight (little third-party support). While the fans of the Dreamcast helped supported him to fight another round or 2, the Dreamcast forfeited the match after round 5 from being too gassed out.
The PS2 then went on to defeat the Gamecube and Xbox and win the Sixth-Generation Console Belt. While the PS2 is still fighting, he's near retirement and will hope his successor, the PS3, will be able to finally hold his own and become a respectable fighter (system) one day.

... Now how in the hell did I ever come up with that crazy analogy?

it was the 1st on the internet, and th last pure gaming machine.

ambientFLIER6186d ago

Dreamcast wasn't the first. Wasn't there a 16 or 8 bit system that allowed players to play against each other over the internet?
