Things We Hate About Gaming: Unskippable Cutscenes

Negative Gamer writes:

Pretty obvious, but it really does bear mentioning. When you pop in a game your goal is more than likely to play said game. I can appreciate that some games have epic stories about an evil corporation, a rag-tag band of resistance fighters and a spiky haired antagonist, but you know what? Sometimes I just don't give a shit about any of that and I just want to sit down and actually play my game immediately without long winded bouts of exposition.

hmmm.......

what about using cutscenes to load the next level?

RememberThe3576218d ago

I usually play a game for it's story as well as the gameplay, so I tend to watch the cutscenes anyway. I mean sh*t, I liked Too Human's story. I was pissed off when the game end after 8 HRS! An RPG this is 8hrs long... Give me a brake...

Aikuchi6218d ago

I totally agree about pausing during cutscenes. I could play a game for 10 hours strait and no one will need me. But as soon I get to a cutscene that I cant pause everyone need my attention then.

Don't forget it took them 12 years to make that 8 hour RPG with the cutscene that you cant skip every time you die.

What?

The Metal Gear Solid games have skippable cutscenes . . . Unless you're trying to say something else, in which case maybe be more specific in the future?

Edit: A disagree already... is it disagreeing with the notion that vague comments aren't doing anybody any good, or are you disagreeing that MGS games let you skip the cutscenes? Because if it's the latter, then why don't you go play one and see for yourself!

callahan096218d ago (Edited 6218d ago )

Edit:

I'm so confused by all these vague comments!

@callahan

i'm pretty sure Death is replying to the OP

darkzodiac556218d ago

have you even played it ? what a looser

Elimin86218d ago (Edited 6218d ago )

Unless you are referring to the intro with those stupid commercials, that I understand. That almost prevents me from starting a new game sometimes. You have to sit through all those commercials which I wish there was a way to skip. As for the cutscenes they are skippable but why would you want to skip those, unless you played the game like 100 times already... But yeah I rather have skippable cutscenes though so I can skip them after I have gone through the game at least 3 times.

ZeroBlitz6218d ago

The commercials at the beginning of the game are interesting and short... what's there to complain about there?

Now I try to understand the storyline, and about 80% of the time I don't mind any of the cutscenes.

With MGS4, every cutscene was worth watching. I understand it can get in the way of playing such a great game but only to a certain point, if you are a real gamer and not another xbox360 fanboy you would easily shrug it off.

callahan096219d ago

It's nice to skip them on subsequent play throughs, though. When you already know what's going on and you just want to enjoy the gameplay.

SpoonyRedMage6219d ago

I agree with you about cutscenes not being bad but I disagree with you suggesting only 360 fanboys don't like them. There was plenty of people complaining about the sheer length of the cutscenes in MGS4 and I'd say most of them weren't 360 fanboys.

Daoshai6218d ago

what a fanboy comment that was. God I hate fanboys

Phantom_T6219d ago (Edited 6219d ago )

The first time round I will watch all cutscenes.
From then on after it's just the good ones, there's times when I want to boot up Assassins Creed but I'm stopped by the 3 day cutscene before each level that you just cannot skip.

cpuchess6218d ago

Agree with you 100%, I would of kept coming back to AC if it wasn't for that stupid cut scene you have to watch everytime you play it!

callahan096219d ago

Equally important to being able to skip cutscenes, in my opinion, is the ability to PAUSE cutscenes. People who complain about the movies in MGS4 should be thankful that you can skip them AND pause them. Both options are available to you, which makes the whole thing very user friendly.

doctorstrange6219d ago

I always end up missing crucial parts of storylines

Tony P6218d ago

A combination of both is definitely the best. And if you're presented with the option to skip a cutscene, let's have a confirmation or something. Too many times has this unfortunate string of events played out:

Game: *cutscene*
Me: Great. Now I'll just put the controller down and... *click* Oops.
Game: Now remember what I said in the cutscene, player! It's the only way to beat the boss!^^
ME: Oh, you motherf--

The_Firestarter6218d ago

I seriously don't know how many times that has happened to me. Too many times the controller tips over and a button is accidentally pressed as I set it down for a cutscene. I can't stand the thought for even a minute.

+bubbles for making it funny :)

Max Power6218d ago (Edited 6218d ago )

Xenosaga game, and one of the cut scenes was damaged (scratches on the disc) but I did a search on youtube, and found said scene and watched it. that is what I do when I am confronted with an unskipable/ unpauseable cut scene, and I have to answer the door/phone/dump/or any other bathroom emergency during that b!tch of a cut scene. Thanks to all the people who tape all the cut scenes in every game.
