Blu-ray Is Killing Itself

Gizmodo:
Even though the format has grown 72% in the last quarter, every Blu-ray player we choose to review has an abundance of features that have nothing to do with Blu-ray. In fact, they all have to do with delivering movies in a different way, with more instant gratification.

The joke is, when we were pushing for Blu-ray 2.0 with BD-Live a year ago, we didn't realize that the ethernet port was really not about enhanced Blu-ray at all, but about video on demand. I own a few Blu-rays, like Wall-E, that have BD-Live components. Never even bothered with them. No point. But you'd be a 'tard to buy a Blu-ray player without an ethernet port, and you'd be a 'tard to buy a Blu-ray player without Netflix on demand, and at this point, another service for new-release movies, like Amazon VOD or CinemaNow.

Genesis56220d ago

Though a video on demand service with your BR player is a nice extra. For a true HD cinematic experience in visuals and sound. Nothing beats the quality of a BR disc.

Pissed off HD-DVD supporters are funny. :)

DasBunker6220d ago

lulz i tought those "bluray is teh doomz" articles were long gone... whats next a "PS3 haz no games" article?

Christopher6220d ago

Blu-ray isn't killing itself, Blu-ray manufacturers are realizing all of the options people have for watching media and are offering them as much as possible in one player. None of the digital distribution comes close to what a real Blu-ray disc can offer and digital distribution is still a short term viewing option considering the lack of space for maintaining movie libraries.

Anon19746220d ago

You'd be a 'tard to read an entire article that used phrases like "you'd be a 'tard" and take it seriously.

How on earth does this garbage get approved?

xwabbit6220d ago

This is where the article kills it self "Even though the format has grown 72% in the last quarter"

6220d ago
XxZxX6220d ago

even asia adapted Blu-Ray, you can now buy Japanese,Korean and Hongkong Blu-ray movie? How's that failing.

You want to know failing, checkout HD-DVD.

joemayo766220d ago

although I only used BD-Live once (for Dark Knight) this article reads like some overly critical, forum dweller wrote it.

"But you'd be a 'tard to buy a Blu-ray player without an ethernet port, and you'd be a 'tard etc..."

it's people like this that make me question the system that determined who kept their job and who didn't.

Agent VX6220d ago

Blu-ray is a format that will never, ever be close to as big as DVD. The facts support that Bluray will be nothing but a minor format for movie viewing, no matter how hard Sony and their supporters push the format.

Regardless of this fact, watching Batman in Bluray is noticeably nicer than the DVD upscaling counterpart.

Due to N4G's censorship format, I can only respond once. Welcome to cyber censorship!!!

GWAVE6220d ago

Holy crap. Is this article a joke? No, seriously.

I thought the "Blu Ray is teh dead!" arguments had been silenced last July/August. People are STILL praying to their pagan gods for Blu-Ray to fail?

ActionBastard6220d ago

"Even though the format has grown 72% in the last quarter..."

Nuff said.

deeznuts6220d ago

Gizmodo is sister site to Kotaku.

Need I say more?

Andronix6220d ago

Its astounding how inexperienced writers dont let the facts get between them and a good story.

Some articles are opinion pieces, although you might disagree with a journalist you respect their point-of-view. However this flame-bait is terrible and discredits itself. The amateur writer attempts to claim that Blu-ray is 'killing itself' however the simple honest fact that 'Blu-ray sales have grown 72% in the last quarter' a phenomenal growth cannot, not by any stretch, be interpreted to be deemed as 'killing itself.' When the article is based on the opposite of facts then it discredits the website, and the person who wrote it discredits themself. I don't know who Wilson Rothman is, but if I see any articles with his name on them, I will be sure to click away.

badz1496220d ago

epic fail! this article is killing journalism!

The Lazy One6220d ago

He was just pointing out how it's wierd that any good blu-ray player supports major digital distribution services, which directly and majorly compete with blu-ray sales. So essentially good blu-ray players are supporting a competing format.

That's what the whole point of the article was. Not to say the format was dying.

andron6220d ago

I think both you and the author miss the point.

Blu-Ray player manufacturers have wised up to the fact that people want options and value. With including the ethernet port they ensure that people use their device both for Blu-Ray and VOD. This way they don't buy another device and possibly ignore their Blu-Ray player.

The people behind Blu-Ray know VOD will grow and now they can offer both options. It's a win/win situation for them...

JasonPC360PS3Wii6220d ago

Well, there goes the only reasom people buy a PS3 :)

kaveti66166220d ago

Just get a PS3. Seriously, if you get one you will be cured of your fanboyism. It's a fact. If you own the product you will be more likely to defend it. Look at me. I defend the 360 all the time. It's a good product. I see all of it's flaws and I still like it for the most part. Buy a PS3, and maybe then you will stop being a tool for 360.

Viper76219d ago

"you'd be a 'tard to buy a Blu-ray player without Netflix on demand"

Writer completely forgets that Netflix is American only, or atleast a service with rather limited availablility. Blu-ray discs are available world wide. Ofcourse all these network based Movie download systems will probably be the next big thing.

Maybe withing next ten years, if connection speeds keep getting cheaper and faster and ppl will get used to these.

GameGambits6219d ago

It's funny people put these articles up. Why waste your own time to look like a stupendous jack ass?

To whoever said something along the lines of, "what's next a ps3 has no games article," I find that funny, because if I get on my 360 and I talk to random people who are friends with people on my list they still say that crap LMAO. "PS3 has no games and never will have any I want."

You just ask the 360 maniac what games, this year, he can only get on his 360 that he is SO excited for and you watch him list multi-plats or nothing. He'll reply with yah but PS3 has nothing. You list 20+ games that are out, are coming this year, etc of all sorts of genres and are amazing and you watch the topic change to, "but the online sucks." You laugh, explain the online, and they switch to yah but 400 dollars is a lot. You ask and explain how much they've spent on 360 and its components, and you just watch them change the subject at last to, "Oh I gotta go."

It's a sad sad thing that happens.

Can't they just get over it already?

cryymoar6220d ago

of wanting Bluray to fail now?
Who pissed in your cereal?
I don't know about you, but myself and millions of others are enjoying the high definition experience of Bluray.

My next Bluray purchase: Planet Earth

jBat176220d ago

loved every minute of it..

iHEARTboobs6220d ago

Yes, Planet Earth is a must. I bought this collection.... http://www.amazon.com/Defin...

lordgodalming6220d ago

Got Planet Earth for Christmas, and it's amazing. There is one downside to the BD Planet earth, which is the baffling lack of behind-the-scenes footage included in the regular DVD version. However, none of that material was filmed in HD and you can watch it all online. Enjoy the show!

DelbertGrady6220d ago (Edited 6220d ago )

I have it on Betamax and UMD.

poeo6220d ago

Baraka on blu-ray is even more amazing than Planet Earth. trust me. because i LOVE Planet Earth.

It's a very slow, painful death. You know, one of those where you have to build up for a big loss. Yeah, that's it.

XxZxX6220d ago (Edited 6220d ago )

We all gonna die sooner or later right, so techinically we all are killing ourselves...

dantesparda6220d ago

I gotta say that all you muthafvckas that commented before me have done a great job of clowning these clowns (Gizmodo, a mad douchebag site). So i need not say more. But peace out and keep up the good work guys. And p.s AgentVX is just a fanboy hater!

SpoonyRedMage6220d ago

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle27d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.
