Microsoft Working on Digital Entertainment Handheld

Well placed sources have told TeamXbox.com that Microsoft is in the final design stages of a "digital entertainment handheld."

"

This source defined the Microsoft handheld as “unlike anything on the market today,” and said that the only way to describe it is to “think of a mashup of the Sony Mylo, the PSP, and the iPhone… errr, the iPod Touch; [the MS handheld] doesn’t need access to a phone network.” That last sentence was one of the juiciest comments made, since the source wanted to emphasize this device lacks access to a phone network and that’s why he changed the iPhone example with the iPod Touch. "

interesting.

A recent budget cut to the Entertainment and Devices division, which includes the Xbox, Zune and Windows Mobile units, has revealed Robbie Bach’s group was definitely expending lot of money in R&D; as much as $250 million in only six months; so that figure confirms they were definitely working on something new -- and I don’t think it is the third Xbox home console.

Could the longer-than-expected recession affect or completely cancel the launch of a brand new platform such as a portable Xbox? Time will tell.

i hope this is true...

I think you are on to something. This could be MS's Trojan horse for E3.

KingKionic 6210d ago

If this is the trojan horse....i need a condom..

LOL

I'd buy that! Just as long as it doesn't run Windows Mobile and after 6 months when I know it won't fail on me.

Sounds good though! It's a crowded market though and I wish MS all the luck.

@below: 2 sticks is a must if it's going to be a gaming device! My biggest beef with the PSP.

I will put my approval on it if the submitter moves it from news to rumors. This is just a rumor and not confirmed.

oh please... do we really need another handheld in the already saturated market? only if they can bring something somewhat innovative to the table, otherwise, it will bomb just like the zune.

It's going to be a Zune HD. It'll be just like the iPhone except it will flop because of WinMo 6. Whether you are a fanboy or not, you have to agree that Windows Mobile 6 is the worst mobile phone operating system (outside of Verizon's Red or whatever it's called).

Voice. Over. IP.

Who needs a cellphone when you can use VoIP?

This will *absolutely* change the market, top to bottom. If MS can get some version of their Exchange/Communicator Unified Messaging framework working on this device look out. They'll unsettle the whole Cellphone industry.

I *hope* this happens, I'm fracking tired of being held hostage to the phone networks.

@1.5

Windows Mobile is the *best* Smartphone OS on the market. Bar none. The UI isnt as flashy as OSX-lite, sure, but WinMo 7 will address that (and more, like unified Desk/Web/Portable UI via WMF)

When OSX-lite can multi-task, and doesnt run everything as root, get back to me. When Android doesnt crash every 20 seconds, get back to me. When Symbian can quietly run as an 3G AP, get back to me.

In short, STFU. Windows Mobile is a fantastic smartphone platform. Stable. Fast. Featureful. Able. And, it is still 1000% larger install base than OSX-lite.

"bomb like the zune"

No. The Zune is the #2 HD-based player in the world, and it is only available in the USA. The Zune a failure? In your dreams. Sure, it's not as big as the ipod, but it is a mature market now.

The Zune is a better player than ipod. Radio. WiFi Ad-hoc networking. Zune > itunes. XNA games on all devices.

Just stop, look at you people, JUST TROTTING OUT YOUR USUAL BULLSHIT. "Oh, Windows Mobile and Zune suxors!!1one!" just STFU and take it to the openzone.

If this device uses Ethernet for free Messenger IM or VoIP there is going to be serious disruption for DS/PSP, DAP (ipods) **and** cellphones (RIM, Android, Palm etc).

You know as well as I do that MS could very well have the holy-grail of handhelds ready for market. They've got all the pieces very very very far along -- if they put them on a Zune HD, it is going to explode the current market.

Could it be any more obvious?

Mo0eY6209d ago

As I mentioned above, it's going to be a Zune HD. MacRumors.com made this claim over a month or two ago, and it's the only way the Zune can "compete" against the iPhone/iPod Touch.

cherrypie6209d ago

@ The two people above.

A) Windows Mobile 6 has over 20,000 commercial Applications well established in the marketplace. Not 1000 Fart Apps, but things that Enterprises, professionals -- and yes, great games. All coming to a unified Windows Mobile Marketplace with the the release of WinMo 6.5. Which is due this fall, is currently in beta, I've seen it on a HTC -- and it is seriously good.

B) Zune already runs XNA titles.

C) Zune HD can use WiFi for messaging, access to the WinMo/Xbox/Zune Marketplace, Gaming etc etc.

All these other firms have one or two single elements of this package, done kinda-well. MS is the ONLY one that can do all of it, and has all of it ready.

I'll pay $400 for such a device, happily.

PSP26210d ago

why are microsoft spending more money on a handheld, the zune failed so bad i mean its not even funny.

FantasyStar6210d ago (Edited 6210d ago )

Ya? And the DS is stomping over the PSP in worldwide sales. Just cause one area doesn't do well doesn't spell doom for the entire company in that industry nor does it mean that company should stop trying.

And let's not forget how the iPod is stomping on just about every MP3 Player out there, but you don't see companies like Sandisk, Creative, Philips, or Sony cashing in their chips any time soon.
