In Electroplankton, there are two main game modes: Performance and Audience. In the Performance mode, the user is able to interact with the many plankton using the stylus and microphone to create various music and video game sounds in patterns and tracks. The Audience mode lets the gamer put the handheld down and just watch the show put on by the plankton. Although it seems like it would be watch only, the player can interact with the plankton, but is more like a basic demo.

Electroplankton falls somewhere between a toy, a musical instrument, a rhythm game, and an art project.
