Xbox 360's 3DV motion tech explained

E3 2009: 3DV's technology being developed by Microsoft...

It is looking increasingly likely that Microsoft is gearing up for the big unveil of its new 3D motion-sensing camera controller for the Xbox 360 at E3 2009, so it is time to have a little look at the technology behind the E3 rumours and hype.

Firstly, while we have to stress that nothing has been officially confirmed by Microsoft, the rumours that the new Xbox 360 3D motion-cam is to be unveiled at gaming expo E3 have been fuelled this week by reports in the Wall Street Journal.

So what exactly is this so-called 'Wii killer' motion-sensing technology that 3DV has recently sold to Microsoft? And how does it work?

But they have to have some proper software support to take this off the ground. Sony has been announcing some interesting things with their Eye Cam too.. let's see who can deliver this E3.

Also adding a new peripheral for a new game play element is not going to suit well with people who have already bought a Xcam etc..

I guess either way some will criticize the move, if true I think its very interesting as you said, but lets say this news is just BS then the naysayers will say micro doesn't try to innovate. I say as long as we keep getting our Halo, Gears, Forza, Mass Effect, and Alan Wake gaming experiences that can be enjoyed with standard controls then adding some casual type games with "gesture" controls won't bother me a bit, and maybe just maybe they *might be able to do it right in a *serious game for more hardcore/traditional gamers like myself.

I know we won't see anything significant anytime soon but can you imagine a ME type game where teleportation, energy fields, electrocution, interfaces, etc could all be controlled with hand/body movement? I think that will sit fine with people who truly interested in seeing gaming evolve....I mean the 360 vision camera works exactly like its advertised on the xbox.com, its tech was limited so the ONLY dissapointment I see is that there wasn't alot of games that made use of it with stuff like "face in the game technology".

Did they actually make any games for it? Other than the rubbish ones at launch?

JeffGUNZ6261d ago

Yeah, agreed. But this camera is completely different. It's not like the cr4p one out now. This camera is suppose to even let you control your dashboard with your fingers, like swiping to the left, will move a blade to the left, etc...This will be a real GIANT step for interactive-gaming. I just hope they can incorporate big name titles into this technology instead of generic cartoon looking sports games like the Wii does.

Game13a13y6261d ago

hm..me think, in Gears of War 3, you're gonna hold a gun made with air in your hand and pretend you are pulling the trigger to shoot? don't know how it will work out, but it could be interesting to see the ways they will come up with.

JeffGUNZ6261d ago

If they do it without a controller, I assume it will pick up when your pointing at the screen, where your finger points, is the cross-hairs. I think that would work, be pretty cool. But, leaving the option to still use the controller would be great, so if you don't like it, just use the controller.

Bnet3436261d ago

The camera is nothing fancy, but it's nice for Uno. That's what I use it for.

lighting is a serious issue with this tech along side players position, people that stand left or right of the cameras position will end up permantly frustrated.sony,s eye pet idea is set close to the tv within a smaller frame so it should work properly.outside that its a guessing game, remember them psn early trials of topaz etc,not great to say the least.can,t remember the game sony had with the stand and cards that worked well from what i,ve seen of it at my mates.there again no real distance and the camera was in a fixed position.

JeffGUNZ6261d ago

That was a big concern, but from what I have been reading, the depth technology works great. Basically I gathered from a few articles stating that light plays no role in this camera, you supposedly can play with the lights on or off. Also, it's suppose to black out what is not desired to be in the camera, so your furniture or people in the background would not effect the cameras performance. Again, lets stress that nothing has been confirmed, but from ALL the articles I have been reading on this technology, this is what the general consensus is saying.

Jeff you and this camera need to get a room.

Says the dude who spends more time sleeping with his PS3 than he does playing on it.

JEDI WOLVERINE6261d ago

They should leave this for the next xbox - really knuckle down and intergrate it (where possible) with the next gen instead of introducing it this late in the day - Ninty at the mo have this Generation wrapped up so prudence would be advisable.

zoydwheeler6261d ago

I don't think we're going to see such a massive leap to a 'next gen' console - merely a series of iterative improvements and additions to the consoles we have now over the next years... until the quality of the gaming experience via your set-top box or whatever takes over and Wii/PS3/360 fade into memory around 2012/13...

JeffGUNZ6261d ago

True, but what Microsoft is doing is smart. Think about it for a second in this manner. Nintendo has hit their peek, sales are starting to SLOW a little for them. Microsoft is still staying for the hardcore gamer audience and the average gamer, not the casual. But, what this does is grab a few more people over from the Wii to the 360. People who enjoy the Wii see this technology, where it works MUCH better and you don't need any controller in your hand to play, they are going to become interested in this product. I think Microsoft needs to incorporate popular, big name titles with this technology. I expect to see many games in the next year or 2 that release to be optional how they play, with a controller or not. Imagine if they figured somehow to make like Gears 3, or Allan Wake, or even Modern Warfare 3 (we all know there will be one), all using this technology. It would make it very exciting. Also, if it's not your cup of tea, then just play standard with your controller. It's a brilliant idea to bring over some more gamers from the Wii. They are basically setting up for NEXT generation. This Gen is pretty much decided, with a winner atleast, and it's nintendo. Microsoft knows this and is just setting up for the next gen, building up potential buyers.

dcbronco6261d ago

This tech could be great in this and any generation. Just looking at it from the standpoint of tacticle shooters. You could use hand gestures to direct your team. To direct fire on a position. To make your team move to a position. If this can not only see your hand but what each finger is doing, you could use all types of hand signals. Use this with voice commands and the battle is more real than ever. Imagine a game like Ghost Recon 4. You are in an ambush. You point to a position and use voice to tell a certain soldier to move and give suppressing fire. You point another soldier to do the same at another position. You tell the third where to use his smoke to cover your move and you fire a rocket to take out a tank. It has lots of possibilites.

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
