I like both consoles, but indysurfn's comment is ignorant. The PS3 doesn't need saving. It's in third place, so what? Nintendo was in third place last generation and now look where it is at? Anything can happen. There is still time for things to change even this generation. Third place doesn't mean nearly as much as some morons make it out to be. Especially when the difference in sales between the 2nd place console and 3rd place console are so small.

The fact is the PS3 in its time on market has sold just as well (if not more) as the 360 did in the same time frame. The race as people like to imagine it is an illusion. It doesn't exist, except in the minds of fanboys. In the real world what matters to the companies are their profits and what matters to real gamers are the quality of game experiences they get. Nobody that isn't an extreme fanboy really cares which console sells 50 million first.

idc who wins...E3 this year is gonna be a win for all gamers (although the PS3 does have the best confirmed lineup probably ever this year)...i'm pretty sure fans of all 3 systems are going to be pleased to see what happens at E3...I frankly can't wait for all 3 consoles to drop bombshells on the gaming community and make us all excited for the years to come...after all we are gamers and we have invested a lot into these systems and deserve to be given the best for our money...

also all 3 of the consoles have a made a splash this gen and all 3 have their pros and cons...PS3 has most features/free online but it's the most expensive and it's online experience is still not as concrete as the 360's, 360 best online experience/cheap price but you have to pay for online, and you have to shell out big bucks to expand your hard drive and it's not as reliable as the other consoles, wii has revolutionized gaming and made console gaming accessible to the casual gamer at a cheap price and motion controls just add to the experience but the lack of HD graphics, hard drive and subpar online experience really hurt its overall value...

overall all 3 systems are great and we should all be thankful that they're churning out high quality games at this rate...who cares who has the best lineup...i just wish i had enough to buy all the games I wanna buy right now, I can't even imagine how many games i'm going to have to wait to buy after this year..

It's a great year to be a gamer, but it's a bad year to be broke :/

Whatever year you have a PS3 is the year for it.

For me 2008 was the year of the PS3, because I got one and finally got to play MGS4. Still waiting for a game to go past that mountain top of awesomeness, but plenty games have come close to its summit. 2008 also gave me Little Big Planet and Resistance 2, which I had a blast playing through on my PS3. I also cruised through Valkyria Chronicles for another fun ride that I could only have on my PS3.

My rides on my 360 were limited to Fable 2 and Gears 2 which both sucked so much that my list of fail for both of those games is more than the one for Superman on N64.

Whatever year you are in possession of a PS3 to play its games is the year of the PS3. Stop being poor and ignorant and get one you so called "gamers."

All this talk of ps3 being crowned champion is a little to premature. Everybody keeps forgetting that microsoft is a giant and they are going to stop at nothing to make sure sony doesn't upstage them, especially at E3. They've been silent this whole time which means that they have a lot of surprises in the works. Anybody who believes that microsoft has no AAA exclusives planned for this year is delirious. I'm expecting a lot from them.

the only game system i would count out is the wii... remember wii music, the most ridiculous sh** i've ever seen. They're way to comfortable and they need to step up there game or there going to be in for a big surprise when sony and microsoft overtake them.

All last year, no matter what happened, I could count on reading articles about the PS3 dying a slow and painful death. The reason? Sales numbers being low, and a high price tag.

The media (and fanboys) beat it like a dead horse. And still do.

Now the media (and fanboys) have latched on to the next dead horse: the 360 *allegedly* not having any good games coming out.

You can expect dozens upon dozens of articles about it. Not because it's really that big a deal, and not because it's necessarily true, but because the media and fanboys need *something* to entertain themselves and get hits.

Just like they went on and on and on about the PS3 being beaten, dying, and being too high priced, they will go on and on and on about the 360 not having any games and falling behind (presumably) in sales.

Where do I stand on the matter? In front of my console enjoying the games.

Who will sell more this year, PS3 or 360? I sure as hell don't know.

But I know this year is the year of the PS3 for ME... just like every other year.

Anyways, if Sony does a price cut, I can pretty much guarantee PS3's will outsell 360's this year.

But that doesn't matter because either way, I'm getting a lot of games for my PS3 this year. ^_^

I don't normally pay much attention to these articles, and in truth I think any year is a good year for consoles - but I was logging into Home the other night, looking at all the insanely great games coming out, downloading a few new ones from the Store, and it hit me:

The PS3 is poised for a major steamroll. That doesn't mean the competition is going to be crushed - far from it. What it does mean is that the PS3 is picking up speed and strength at an exponential rate; and that Sony's future in the market is looking very rosy indeed. Everyone had doubts when it first hit the stores, especially with such a hefty price-tag; but those doubts should now be squashed flat.

Which is good news for all of us, regardless of what you're playing on; because tougher competition means more innovation and better quality of gaming for everyone.

Naughty Dog - Highly respected developer, never let down, always excel at animation, narrative and art, very cinematic.
Insomniac - Ratchet game, modern unmatched platform game series, also respected.
Sucker Punch - High rising studio just with 4 titles previously behind them who caught up to the likes of Naughty Dog and Insomniac in a short matter of time.

The top Sony trinity all have a game this year. Like the most successful days on the PS2.

And of course Santa Monica's GoWIII.

Games and developers that you HAVE to have a PS3 to access.

Why does the PS3 need a "Year of" so bad?

Why is it the only console that has to have these cheerleading articles constantly?

If you are happy and confident in your purchase then it should be the "Year of" whatever system you own.

I've had a 360 since launch and every year has been the year of the Xbox 360 in my house. Now this year will be the Year of PS3 and Xbox since I have both systems. I don't need some website to tell me that.

Yeah, but that lot certainly makes it year of PS3 for me, pretty much what I bought a PS3 for. I'm sure many PS2 exclusive buyers would feel the same. This to me, is a dream gaming year.

EDIT: Also, I'd like to point out that all gaming journalism has had nothing but praise for those devs in the past and basically finally have no reason to 'hate' the PS3, I very much doubt it if R&CF2, U2 or Infamous are duds.

I actually think Insominac, Naughty Dog and Heavy Rain isnt that a fantastic combo. Especially if your an RPG or car driving fan.

Good devs, butsome genuine PS2 sequals would be appreciated more I would suggest.

For every "PS3 is dying" article, there's a "360 RROD epidemic" or a "Microsoft is t3h evil1!1!!" article. Don't you guys see? The media doesn't care what console is better or who "wins", they're happy to put up flaimbait articles to rile up a good ol' moan and a fight from the fans, all in the name of getting hits.
The media are a business, like any other and they make money by getting hits. They get hits by having headlines that they KNOW people are going to want to see more of. The only difference between the likes of HHG and the general media is that HHG doesn't disguise it as well as they do.
Anything that bamouths the PS3 or the 360 is great for them. They probably don't attack the Wii as much simply because most Wii owners are "casual" and don't read up on it.
But Console fanboys, they're perfect targets - passionate, yet dumb enough to not see that they're being used.
Year of the PS3? Doesn't matter, it's not going anywhere, nor is the 360. Neither console is dying, both are still going to be here a year or 2 years from now. The next 3 years could be the "year of the PS3", or none of them could be, Sony will still make a profit, as will any PS3 developer worth their salt (Exclusive or not).

The reason "So many people NEED for the ps3 to fail " is because of articles like this. It's a never ending loop....where mud is slung so that people feel justified in their purchase. I have to be honest....I do not cheer against any console, but I do enjoy the occasional hiccup so that I can see the diehard fan's world turn upside down. Is just really sad that some people have such a strong allegiance to a company that is just after their money. I mean just look at the ignorance from the article

1.)I would argue that the hate would be at Sony, and not necessarily the ps3. 2.)How can you liken the ps3 to Goliath...Goliath died, and if Sony's system refused to die......then it can't be considered Goliath. So again, such articles like this only highlight the Don Kings of the video game world....promoting these fights, and then sitting back and collecting (numerous hits on their site).

Are gamers the ones writing the thousands of doom PS3 articles? or poor excuse writers that have access to the internet and a keyboard.

I have had my PS3 for about a year and the 360 for a year and a half. Both are great, in no moment did i thought the PS3 was in need of saving because I knew what the PS3 had to offer and im a 100% satisfied gamer.

2009 is just gonna deliver the goods but exponentially when compared to 2007, 2008 and that is why i see 2009 for the PS3 as the 360's 2007 (remember the year that HD gaming went mainstream).

MS may show at E3 enough to make 2009 the greatest year in gaming when you sum up the PS3 + 360 firepower.
Either way there is no doubt that the PS3 is poised to have a great year and already announcing for 2010. I like this a lot because i payed $500 for my BC PS3 and to see such a bright future is great news.

No need to bash one console over the other because as a gamer i want both consoles to be great and keep delivering the AAA games like the ones that are already making it worth to buy either console.

Great comment, no-spin. I feel exactly the same way.

I have had a 360 since launch and a PS3 a little while after it launched and I like them both. I think this year is looking fantastic for the PS3, but I haven't written off the 360 because there are some great games coming (like Mass Effect 2) and because I know MS still has the chance to announce some great games at E3.

So far I personally would give the year to the PS3, but the 360 could very well have a great year as well. We'll see.

I like both consoles. The PS3 is obviously a lot more reliable than the 360, but they both have good games.

I do agree that based on what has already been released and what has been announced the PS3 easily has the better lineup. But the 360 is getting some good games like Mass Effect 2 and Splinter Cell 5 and MS still might announce something significant at E3. Who knows? But they are both good consoles in general.

This whole "Year of" stuff is totally subjective, at the end of 08 i remember thinking "What an amazing year i've had with my PS3", but does my opinion reflect everyone elses experience? No.

I mean, there are people who own both consoles who thought 2008 was the 360's years, there are people who own both consoles who thought it was the PS3's - it is all totally down to personal preference.

For me? PS3 got it, but does that mean the 360 had a rubbish year? Not at all, and infact it is probably down to the 360 that i had a better year with the PS3 than i did (Don't ask :p).

Now please, we will never come to a universal agreement that a certain year belonged to a certain console, so why don't we stop these articles since like i said, it is down to personal preference.

PS: THIS YEAR IS THE RETURN OF THE DREAMCAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't want to come and make any console vs console talk in this thread, but - i too care about the games, which is why i have my PS3 as my main, prefered console over the 360 - it is a personal preference, do you not understand that?

I challenge you to read the over 100 comparisons Eurogamer has done, and Lens of Truth a weekly basis. Its almost a guarantee Xbox will better the PS3. Every week. PS3 has 3-4 games that have won but.....not that many really.

And I own the PS3 also(PSN:Lloyd_Christmas1) and I understand that someone might prefer the PS3. I don't understand how they could, personally. Xbox 360 after all has XBox Live, 300 more games and the big popular games that many people play.

I didn't mean it in a bad way(I enjoy my PS3 also)...just curious. 300 more games is a lot.

I used to have both till the 360 broke down 3 times. The supposedly superior multi plats and exclusive DLC , pay 2 play online etc. Is not missed. The Dishwasher and castle crashers is though.

The BC PS3 has the largest library btw.

I'll answer your question since I bought my PS3 only 4 month ago.

I did all my research on which system I wanted, and The XBOX 360 had more games overall (year head start), but most of the new games went to both systems.

The PS3's BluRay, Wifi, Bluetooth and free internet, more advanced controller all built in were nice touches, but wasn't quite enough to push me over the edge. Rather what was was the reported failure rate of XBOX 360. I honestly don't care if I'm buying a toaster or kitchen blender, if I know it's prone to break I am not gonna be stupid enough to buy it. To me that would be idiotic and if it broke, knowing what I've heard and read about them, If It broke on me, I would deserve what I got. Sorry, but that was the straw that beat the camel into submission, from my perspective anyways.

Now that I've had the system for a few months, I'm very glad I invested in it. Just this year alone is proving to be possibly the best year for the system.
So far, according to Metacritic, in 2009 3 AAA games(games with a score of 90+) have been released for the PS3, Killzone 2 (91), Street Fighter 4 (94), and MLB The show (90).

The Jury's still out on inFamous, but signs are pointing to a positive direction....couple more weeks and we'll know for sure though.

On XBOX, you've got Street Fighter 4 (93) and GTA The Lost and the Damned (90).

Seeing that SF4 got a slightly higher score, I think its a telling sign that developers are getting the hang of PS3's programming.

The bottom line, considering everything it offered, to me the PS3 displayed a more sound entertainment and gaming investment. But don't get me wrong, the 360 has some nice games and features, but imo, the PS3 seems to offer more overall.

I have both consoles and overall I pretty much like them about the same. However, I find All Time Greatness's comment really absurd.

Is he really trying to make the case that what is important is how many games a console has? The Wii has more games than the PS3 does but to me the Wii library is worth about a 10th of what the PS3 library is worth.

I don't understand how some people have such a difficult time understanding this.
Nobody buys every game available for a console, they buy maybe the top 10 to 50 games that interest them. So obviously what it really comes down to for an individual is which console has the better top 20 or so games that appeal to them.

If console A has 20 games that you love and console B has 10 games that you love, yet console B has a larger library of games overall, which console do you think you are going to prefer?

I can honestly say that about 80 to 90% of both the 360 and PS3's library doesn't really interest me. Sure, if I was stuck on a deserted island (with electricity, of course) I would play some of those games and even enjoy them. But in the real world where time and money are limited you have to narrow down and be more selective about what you play. Around 90% of the games in 360's library I really do not care enough about to ever play, so for all intents and purposes they might as well not even exist (for me).

Point is, it all comes down to which console has the best lineup of games you actually want to play.

i love how every year is the ps3's year even though world wide it is in last place even if for 2 months in japan it sold well!even the gamecube did ok a couple months a year!and the ps3 is the most hated system what? that goes to the wii. everyone says they are hardcore gamers and trash talk the wii all day an say theres nothing on the system for them. but by saying and acting like that they show, that they are not hardcore cause they would know there's great core games on wii and every system a true hardcore gamer doesn't hate on the wii,ps3,xbox360, and they find the games they like on there system, or systems and play the hell out of them and find every secret then can and try to experience everything they can in the game! thats hardcore not crying like my girlfriend cause the system people hate the most. is crushing everyone in sells! yeah the wii not the ps3.cause if the wii is starting to do bad then the other two should just pack it up and go the way of sega! even though ps3 is fun as hell and a good system i'am just stating facts and my opinions so don't get your panteys in a gamers bunch!!!!!! and start enjoying this great hobbie we all got!cause in my 21 years of playing i never seen 3 systems this great with such fun and great software!

First off, because its just a toy, and people should play what THEY love and enjoy. What someone else thinks about the games I like has no bearing on their fun factor for ME.

Secondly, because you get overexuberant fanboys who instead of doing any defending, lash out at the faults of the competition or make excuses. In doing so, they perpetuate the cycle of stupidity by turning around and doing the exact thing they are whining about.

If someone is dumb enough to bash a console without playing it, like oh so many trolls do, its their loss, not mine.

Just asking. I see people bash and defend stuff all the time, and was curious as to your rationale. Their favorite sports team, their car of choice, their favorite beer, etc., you get the picture. It's simply a matter of ball breaking and trying to feel superior. Lashing out at faults in an attempt to defend is really bashing, not defending.

I am likeminded in that I don't give a rat's ass about what anyone thinks about the games I play. I play the games I enjoy, period. We also are in agreement about the trolls, though I will admit that sometimes the funnier ones do have some entertainment value.

Just remember that all though their was no Year of the PS3, there also was no Year of the Xbox 360 either. As long as the WII is still somehow making so much money, neither console can get ahead.

Wait till GOW3 and the mighty GT5.
Most of my friends used to have 360s now they have both and all admit they underestimated ps3, and forced to choose they would keep ps3!!!
Most people who slate ps3 have never had a decent amount of time on one to back up their rants.
Put it this way, if you could only own 1 console for the next 5 years i think ps3 would have a landslide victory.
P.S exactly when was the year of xbox360?...........anybody?...

2006/2007 were amazing years. They had 2006 by default because there was no other next-gen consoles. But the games in the first and second year were amazing. 08 was bit slow but not bad and 09 so far looks like dog balls.

I would figure most people would call a year at the end and not at the beginning. We are only 4 months into 09.

I have to admit that the PS3 has been doing better recently than the 360, but overall I think they are both great systems with their own set of pluses and minuses.

2009 has been all about the PS3 for me, simply because the 360 hasn't had anything that interests me lately, but later this year and next year there are some games I am really looking forward to such as: Mass Effect 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.

While I will always have more faith in my PS3, will generally buy my multi platform games for PS3 because of this and controller preference and generally prefer Sony's exclusives to those on 360 and Wii I still don't see the need for cheerleading articles like this.

Yes, there are some daft things said about the console and at times there has been far too much doom mongering pointed in it's direction but those of us who like our PS3s should just get on with enjoying the games that come our way on it. It'll be a busy year for PS3 owners and that, if the quality stays as high as it has been with KZ2 and seems to be with inFAMOUS, is all you can wish for.

I just pray that if Sony or MS(or both) reveal motion sensing doodads at E3 that it doesn't derail the fine, fine software we've all enjoyed the past couple of years. Hopefully they find a way of making really great games and don't foolishly think there's enough legs in a casual market (most of whom will own a Wii by now and aren't bothered about PSN/Live)to power three consoles sales. As long as 2009 remains a good year for gamers with a PS3, with a 360 or with a Wii then we should all be content.

Great comment and I agree completely.

I also wanted to say that I too have a preference for the PS3's controller. I game on both consoles a lot and I really do find the PS3's controller to be more comfortable and the analogue sticks to be smoother and with less dead space. That's not to say that the 360 controller is bad because it is really close. In fact, there are some things I like about the 360's controller a little better. It's just that I give a slight edge to the PS3's controller.

Don't like these "year of" claims. It's subjective and is perpetually refuted by fanboys on all sides that will only ever see it their own way.

What I do agree with is that the PS3 is the most hated console of all time. It's rather sad. It's expensive, but it's a damn awesome machine and the games (these days) are way up there with any other platform.

here's what i say about people saying it's too expenseive: it's not. there i said it. it's not too expensive. it's 400 bucks. since when is that the end of the world. save up and buy it. 50 percent of the cell phones out are at least that much hell the iphone is more than that. just because one is 400 and one is 200 doesn't make the 400 dollar console expensive it just makes the 200 dollar console cheap. i paid 500 for my 20 gig at launch and i didn't think it was too expensive then. sh1t cost money get over it.

I agree with you, and that's why I think the "year of the" thing is ridicolous. We can't say which games are gonna come out this year and which might be delayed til next year. And that goes for all consoles.

If they insist on crowning a "console of the year" they should wait until the year is over.

PS2 established the gamer base we have today. Where do you find most of those triple A titles???? PS3 but you knew that. MGS4 on 360? ummm no! Wait what about God of War 3? ummm no! Final Fantasy is a god send to 360 owners and they still dont get Versus! Sorry Gears and Gears 2, Fable 2, Halo 3 (all of which I owned during my 4 system ownership of RRoD) do not add up to the PS3 lineup period! This is based on preference but if you look at what made the ps2 successful, most of those titles are ps3 exclusives! Sorry, I had my time with 360 and I regret it for having to deal with 4 broken systems. Still on my first ps3 and I am glad I switched. Fanboys that stay true to 360 are only trying to justify their purchase and sure it has some great games but in the end Playstation is the system that brings you the best titles period! Go ahead and hate, but while you are talking stupid, I'm enjoying titles you idiots only wish you had!

But not in term of hardware sales already sold obviously, but I think many people are going to start realising soon enough that Wii releases far more shovelware than the PS3 and 360, and far too few AAA titles, lets hope that changes or atleast lets hope one of the other consoles outselling it will wake them up

i think everybody knows that. and we've all known that for ever. it's just that the soccer mom's and yuppies don't care as long as they can pretend to bowl and trick them self's into thinking they are exercising. i have a wii and i haven't played it in over a year. i didn't buy it for me, but for my wife and she plays it a lot along with my son. animal crossing. and monkey ball. but for the most part it's a gimmic and more of a toy than a game console.

Fews years ago I had the PS2 and I din't immagine another console except Sony's could be on the market. When I went to buy a game for console I only asked for the version for console because there was only one console to play with or PC. Today the world as changed and when I ask for a game for console everybody think microsoft. It take only fews years to microsoft to change what was common believe. Today I have the XBOX 360 and my friends too. That's not because I'm fans Microsoft but because that console is built for fun and enjoyment with friends. It also offer the same graphic standard of PS3 or even better (as the case of Fallout 3 according to playstation magazine) but the price is lower.

The world is changing and Sony is always a step back the others.

I think in the next years the Sony console will lose is greatness and like for Atari's console nobody will remember it ever existed.

So far this year my PS3 was on for about three days playing KZ2. The rest of the year has belonged to the 360. If this year belongs to the PS3 Sony better get there A$$ in gear. I do have Infamous on pre-order but I'm still undecided. Sony still doesn't have the games I want, lets see Uncharted 2, maybe be this year, amazon.com shipping date?

I knew when writing this article that fanboys would miss the point. The article is not a bash at the 360 or wii.

It is a statement that exclusive games are the way to secure yourself as the number one console and this year both companies have been lacking in big hitters. Sony can capitlise on this void if they produce the quality promised in the games on the list.

Beleive me I know that Sony could fluff this one up and Microsoft will remain at the top of the HD console wars. It's also worth saying, never take your eye off Nintendo. In the last few years they have proved themselves marketing geniuses. So please keep your comments objective Fanboys.

Oh and for the record if you want a RPG year head on back to the Ps2, just like the Ps1 during it's swan song some of the best RPG's came out that no one has heard of.

Thank you for all the comments so far, believe it or not I have read every single one. I'm glad to see so many people are intrested.

The PS3 is not hated by gamers. It's a great console and I'm sure that more people want it. But it is just too expensive to really take off. Drop the price by $100 and you'll start seeing what the machine is capable of.

Also, and this is just my opinion, but there has been such a flood of mediocre games lately that there's just no incentive to make the investment. With the cost of development rising but the price of consoles remaining high, meaning slower software sales for all but the best titles, developers aren't really innovating.

I guess we'll see.

sony has been publishin bunches of good stuff and has alot of horizon, o wait 360 had ninja blade lol i enjoyed that tho only for the action sequences not gameplay to much. but yes ;p

No one ever hated the ps3, its just expensive.

For me the ps3 has been the best console since the release of MGS4, for sony it seemed to mark a milestone when they had an exclusive which was truly brilliant and that seemed to start a wave of brilliant exclusives.

Since then mostly all Ive played really are exclusives and theyve all been brilliant. And this year looks to beat last years lineup which is incredible.

Tbh when i got the ps3 at launch I knew Id have to wait a bit but this was always going to happen. Sony has a lot of cash, a lot of talented in house dev studios, and they want to cater for the real gamers. The ps3 has always been the console to get to have the best experience this gen imo.

Not to say the 360 is bad, but tbh they seem to have started to go causal on us with it, and tbh thats becuase MS wants more money and have good buisseness sense...

its not that hard to guess why the 360 has higher sales. every time the 360 bricks oooohhh look another sale from somebody that dosent want to wait for warranty. 360 may have sold more but if you really think about it you know why, every RROD or E74 is another sale! hmmm wonder how many a month are just for that reason.

The prob I saw with his list of must haves is there isnt much there im excited about.
The only upcoming PS3 game that looks interesting to me is MAG.

And as a note to some "elitest" comments that some cant "afford" a PS3.
How many cars do you have? Do you own your own home or live with your mom? Do you have a washing machine that cost 3x what a PS3 retails for because its what your wife wanted? I dont have all the latest consoles but my Honda Aquatrax sure cost alot more.

Do you miss out on some games not owning a PS3? Sure, but life has other pursuits.
I hope the PS3 has a great year.Ive heard that every year its been out.
Heres hoping....
Now if you will excuse me, Im going to play some Left 4 Dead.

I think all three consoles have a good year so far in some way or another, Nintendo has been selling it's first party games quite well, Sony has been steady with announcements of some great game and releasing Killzone 2. Microsoft has brought us pretty much nothing yet, but has a few sequels cooking this year which will sell millions, like Forza 3. It's looking to be a good year if you're the gamer for another year.
