PS3 will have it's first game with no load screens Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Xbox 360 won't have any games with no load times because the games are compressed to hell and the hdd is not standard.

I'd put my faith in the 360's loading times. Blu-Ray loads at 9mb/s and 360 loads at 16mb/s. When I played Motorstorm it was slow as hell for a next gen game, all 360 games I own load within seconds.

guys, you're taking about 2 different disk media, processor structures, disk formats and speed, devs know how, age of console, if it's full HD or not, any extra content that needs to be loaded, singal or multi format games/ ports. the drive on the ps3s slower BUT blu-rays bigger and holds more content, you can't judge loading times because you're not conparing two of the same types of media or drives.

I thought both took a long time to load. Other games dont take nearly as long for the PS3 or 360. It really depends on the developer.

Like initial load times are even really a significant factor in your gaming experience, considering there are more important things to worry about like graphics, gameplay, and in game system performance. As long as it doesnt take like 3 or more minutes, im cool, and this is coming from a 360 enthusiast. Funny though, Sony's systems always did take a little longer to load games

I have the PS3 version, and as much as I absolutely adore the game itself, the loading times are nothing short of torture. I don't think I've ever played a slower-loading game.

Slow loading times influence the way graphics are drawn on the screen. The slower the speed the longer it takes to load images. And yes it does effect gameplay, if your system can’t draw the screen fast enough you have framerate hiccups and that makes games frustrating to play.

On AVERAGE the 360 and PS3 have EQUAL data transfer rates from their respective disc drives. For the 360 it varies between 16Mb/s and 4Mb/s depending on which part of the disc is being read (dual-layer DVD's read at half speed on their second layer). PS3 reads at a constant rate of around 8 or 9Mb/s. (approx numbers;correct me about the blu-ray speed if I'm wrong).

With that piece of hardware out of the way, next is system bandwidth, memory pool bandwidth, memory frequency, CPU, FSB, etc.

The final part is dealing with the software itself, processing the code, etc. If the code isn't built properly, expect very long load times. You could have the best damn processor in the world, but if the code isn't built right, you're f*cked. Tony Hawk Project 8 on the PS3 is crap; Call of Duty wasn't bad, but still had prominent issues. Even Oblivion on the 360 has long load times. You can usually predict long vs. short load times based on how optimized/skillfully built the code is. Every function takes a certain amount of time to process, and if those functions aren't ordered properly (especially on In-Order Processors like Cell and Xenon) then all the other functions have to wait in line, even with multiple cores.

Play Jak 3 and you'll see for yourself that optimizing code helps combat load times and boosts in-game performance. Honestly, I see no reason to compare load times between consoles other than to say "Mine is Better Than Your's!". Instead, compare it to other games on that platform. Load times + Game Performance are dependent on so many factors (including software) that it's hard to pinpoint what's more responsible for that performance. The hardware? The software? Whether you put it on felt vs. carpet? Who gives a sh*t.

Blu-ray 2x: 8MBps

Assuming the Blu-ray is constantly reading as fast as possible this means the PS3 (which is a 2x Blu-ray player) will read 8 Mbps perfect world scenario, while the 12x DVD in the 360 would worst case scenario drop to 8.2 on certain parts of a double density disk. Utilizing better code or the HDD may speed up a load screen, but as for getting data from a disk source the blu-ray is a little slower.

Who cares? It's a matter of SECONDS, not minutes or hours. Jeez, some of you should have seen the load times on a Commodore 64 or an Apple 2E. Now THAT was a wait.

Of course the 360 loads faster. The DVD drive has a faster read time than the Blu-Ray drive in the PS3.

And as to the original poster who tried to use Oblivion as an example- Oblivion loads data onto the Hard-Drive of the PS3, that is why load times are faster. Why did they do this? Because the loads times would have been MUCH longer if they had not thrown 3+ gigs of information onto the PS3 Hard-drive.

But hey, at least the PS3 has a Hard-drive to fall back on. Microsoft really screwed up by not allowing for EVERY xbox to have a hard-drive. The lack of Keyboard and Mouse support will come back and bite them in the ass later on too.

I believe Project 8 is a single layer DVD. If thats true then its the wrong game for this test. YES 360 loads faster on a single layer DVD 12mb per sec. PS3 blueray is 9mb per sec on both layers. unfortunately, duel layer DVD games run much slower on 360's dvd rom. Tony is a perfect game to compare if you work for Mr. Gates because its a 4 gig game. there for, 360 is at its best. Lets try that same test on 50 gig game like MGS4. Oops my bad. that will never happen because that game will require you to change disks between loading screen now won't it?

Final flaw in the video - you can't see the controllers he used to start them with, so it is just as likely he started the PS3 2 seconds before the 360. In fact, it's probably more likely considering the base load time of BluRay.

I stumbled onto this website a few weeks ago, hoping to find news relating to the launch of the Playstation 3, honest and open opinions on the Xbox360, and general impressions of and experiences with the Wii. Let me start by saying, that I'm by no means new to console gaming, pc gaming or the technical side of things - (I have degrees in both physics and engineering, and I started gaming when you still had to load tapes!) To tell the truth, when I started looking towards the next gen, I wasn't particularly partial to any of the three available consoles. I have since purchased the PS3, and I am extremely happy with it, although that's not what this comment is about.

I was appalled to see how quickly gamers have turned on each other in here. Real gaming news has simply been ignored, and this site has turned into a slagging match over who's console is better.
What I don't understand, is this:
Why is there so much animosity toward each other, and no real introspection of the gamer and his/her part in this industry. Instead, this site is full of downright obnoxious and sometimes ignorant little rants aimed at other peoples consumer choices. Shouldn't this perhaps be a forum aimed at improving the industry overall? After all, I'm sure your feedback means something...

So if you're all really that angry, here's what you should do:

Take it out on Sony, for broken promises, lack of software and long delays...
Take it out on Nintendo for not providing nearly enough stock to meet needs (In the UK anyway), and then simply sitting back and blaming it on the fact that demand is so high. (It's bad business any way you look at it.)
Take it out on Microsoft for manufacturing a console so unreliable that there is now an online debate regarding percentage of failures. (This shouldn't ever be an issue for the consumer to consider, this should've been resolved in QC, long before the machine was released.)

However, if you're not going to do that, at least stop whining at each other. You're creating a stereotype of console gamers that you'll never be able to get away from.

Go and read a book, learn a new language, or learn to play a new musical instrument.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.
