Is launching console in the extremely competitive gaming environment we have today remotely a good idea? Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft would eat the poor thing alive. Not to mention how bad the economy is getting everyday.

Wont happen that will mean 4 consoles on the market and with the current economic situation i dont think it will be financialy realistic to launch a console. Most people own two consoles and people are more than happy. With a 4th console on the market i dont think people will have the money or will be willing to buy another. But i could be wrong and if they do relase a console they could have some great features on it such as iTunes etc

i don't think they should release a console, if they want to make games focus on mobile gaming. who cares if it connects to itunes or ipod (alot of people hate itunes). it is supposed to be a gaming console and 3rd party support doesn't have the capacity to release games for another console. Apple couldn't make GAMES to compete with MS or sony so the other option is a cute white console that plays music and has shovel ware for games. a GAME console should have fun games first and other features second.

however apple has a small legion of fanboys who would buy it simply because there is an apple on the top of it.

First off no. The Iphone may have games but it's the most horrible playing experience ever thanks to the fact that there is no controls. Apple thrives on making some stupid gimmick for their products or just massively over pricing them and seeing as how Nintendo has the Gimmick of motion control down and no one will buy a massively overpriced apple console yeah it wont happen.

Not to mention we don't need another console.

They already know how to make great portable devices, and before hitting the console market they could get some experience first.

Perhaps the touch screens that they are having made are not for the rumoured "ipda" apple netbook device, but for a touch screen console instead.

Lets face it Microsoft and Sony are both battling for music and movie download services, yet Apple are already there, Microsoft doesn't even have a handheld device (not counting the zune), Sony's psp is struggling, and again Apple have an amazing device you can carry with you in your pocket anywhere.

I say let's see what Apple brings to the gaming industry, surely they can't do any worse than consoles we have seen in the past.

It actually makes a lot of sense.

Apple has been trying to break into the living room for years --> Apple TV, without much success. I think they see what Microsoft is doing with LIVE and the downloadable movies, TV shows etc... If they put the iTunes store on an HD/BluRay console that interfaces with people's iphones / ipods it would really bring their whole strategy together. They're in your car, in your pocket, on your computer and in your living room. The app store is already up and running... If they acquire EA as rumored, they would have one of the biggest develper/publisher houses around.

An Apple console would be good for the industry. iPod pretty much changed the music industry. OSX was good for Windows users, it made MS step up their game. iPhone was good for phone industry . . . lots of sexy touch phones with app stores flooding the market. Competing with Apple makes other products step up their game.

I really wouldn't be surprised, and it's actually kind of an exciting prospect. Weird though if all EA games were suddenly exclusive to a newcomer console, eh?

One things for certain, my wallet is not looking forward to another must have product.

I just clicked this article because of the picture.

Apple would rule hand held gaming with a dedicated(with proper controls) iTouch for gaming.

Although they would have to launch early and have strong alliances along with at least a few 1st party Devs to compete. If they do enter the console arena I'd would support them if they can get most 3rd party games, a few 1st party games, free online and a good reliable console with up to date tech features.

if the console is near as awesome as my iphone i'll jump all over it. i'm just concerned about the price. give me a full blown amateur surgeon and id be a happy camper.i love apple products i just can't afford them. (other than the iphone one of the best purchases i've ever made, just behind my ps3) it seems like they actually give a sh1t. unlike a certain console manufacture thats currently in the gaming market. plus they would be a direct competitor to nintendo, not sony or m$. in all actuality there is no room for 4 consoles. so it probably wont happen anyways. apple is the sh1t. by the way i just finished the infamous demo. I can't see them doing a console the iPod and iPhone seem to be doing well with games so if anything they might just go with handhelds. As for consoles noone is going to buy an iBox the price would be double that of a PS3 on launch date second of all the market is too small for 4 consoles. Look back when Panasonic had the 3DO, Atari with the Jaguar, Phillips with the CDi, Sony, Sega and Nintendo. Now two have surived and two are making games now. Apple releasing the iBox will be there downfall as well they barely have a market with their Macs so why now make a console and plus my consoles match the my tv and a fruity iBox green or blue will throw everything out of whack.

I'm serious. I know 29 billion dollars sounds like a lot of money, but most of it has to be reinvested into RND and, marketing, covering for losses in failed ventures (yes, Apple fails too) and basically, Apple really doesn't have any identity with games or gamers. Even the Apple computer has trouble matching the library of games that Windows based PCs deliver, so how can you expect this company to just wing it and break into an industry with such a high barrier to entry, and lets not forget the most important aspect of the industry, DEV support. When MS entered with Xbox, they had little dev support so they had to drop the console and offer the third party devs a reason to make games for 360. Success, but now MS is failing on the 1st party front. I'm not trying to bash MS, just trying to prove my point.

Apple needs to convince third party devs that its worth their time to now develop games simultaneously for three consoles. Will apple have a high market share? I doubt it, they can't compete because their prices are Ludacris (that's right, gangsta). I'm not even going to entertain the idea. Apple can't even compete hardware wise with the other two companies. Apple's integrated GPUs are good for computers but with consoles it has been a different ball game. And where is Apple going to get first party support. If it offers nothing exclusive to the table, then it won't get bought, and look how much bashing MS is taking for not having many exclusives. Apple won't stand a chance.

No offense at Apple lovers, it's just not a good idea to enter the console market now. Maybe later, when Apple proves to devs that it can make them money. And did anyone notice how the Pippin's controller and the PS3 boomerang controller looked very similar?
