Best video game endings ever

Here are some of the best finales in video game history. Some are here because they help flesh out the story, while others just feature great music, or some fun moments with characters. Each one is unique and leaves the player with a positive feeling of accomplishment once the final credits roll.

The ending to Xenosaga III.

Hardly anyone saw it due to low sales so I don't expect to see it on a popularity list, but I would rank that one pretty high. The music, the events, the emotions just added to a very powerful ending to me.

blitz06236231d ago

thanks for you opinion. I'm actually playing through the 1st/3 right now and am wondering how the game will end.

with regards to the article, I'm glad Snake Eater is given credit. I was really surprised by the turn of events in the ending. I was actually expecting MGS4 to be in there too since it finished off one of the most epic franchises, but I guess one will do.

patterson6231d ago (Edited 6231d ago )

The Xenosaga series to me is one of those hidden gems and one of my favorite memories from the PS2 era of rpg's.

People either love it or hate it.
I'll just leave it at that and just hope that you enjoy it as well :)

Panthers6231d ago

I had the first and it bored me, but I was a lot more ADD back then. I would probably enjoy it today. I do remember it having longer cut scenes than MGS4 lol.

KKanjiAnkh6231d ago

Crisis Core had an extremely gut wrenching ending, you knew Zack died, but d@mn, I didn't know like that.

cayal6231d ago

CC was a good ending.

spoiler alert? Everyone who has played FFVII knows he dies.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi6231d ago

are Resistance 2 and dragon quest 8. Hale was a noble but was starting to act like a douche so he deserved that ending. And DQ8 was just plain epic.

Marcelles256231d ago

ZACK DIES.........IM PLAYING THROUGH IT NOWWW
WHY WHY.............

lol just joking

MGS3
MGS4
Ocarina of Time

cmrbe6231d ago

ending for me. I agree though that MGS3 just beats MGS4 ending.

MGS3 ending is the first ending that made me cry. Its was so freaking gut wrenching.

After all the crap he when through he finally realise the truth in the end. The look on his face was just so so sad its not funny. Complete and utter dissolution in everything he held true before. You could see it so clearly when he was getting his award from the president knowing the injustice that has occurred. It was just so so sad.

I only then completely understood Big Boss. He may have been a super solider but no person had to endure what he went through. I really really felt sorry for him. With Snake being his clone i am not surprise at all why snake was the way he was.

That last part when he was walking out on them after the ceremony to the Boss grave to his final salute was so freaking moving that i did cry when i saw that single tear. Big boss was human afterall. He may have been trained to be a super solider and in the process save the world from nuclear annilation but he couldn't help but shed a tear for his friend and mentor. Kojima is a gaming god.

Obama6231d ago

There is no doubt in my mind that mgs3 ending beats mgs4 ending. The ending is so powerful and beautiful that makes you want to rewatch it again and again.

Daishi6231d ago

For once Obama and I agree, MGS3s ending blew 4s ending out of the water. For me (most people disagree but hey it's an opinion) MGS4s ending was such a huge let down. It's like it was thrown together just for shock value and to tie up loose ends. It's like the new Indiana Jones movie with the aliens, Big Boss, really?!

Tr10wn6231d ago

i agree with you MGS4 ending was epic but GoW2 was good too and not that bad

rezzah6231d ago

Shadow of The Colossus, FF7: Crisis Core, Golden Sun 1 & 2, MGS4. Maybe a couple others I think of right now.

Tony240ZT6231d ago

What? The ending of shadow of colossus? Save the woman, but reborn as a mutant child, that was the most odd ending.

So let me get this right Corey said he didn’t want to spend 15 years of his life on the one franchise and decided to do a new IP which is why he didn’t do Ragnarok…but his new game is now a God of War prequel about a character who’s dead using Norse mythology.

I don’t get it, I thought it would be a brand new IP

Lightning7786d ago

Corey's game was suppose to be a new AAA scifi game. If it's GoW spin off that shouldn't take 8 years to develop, its kinda weird.

I think it got scrapped.

Christopher86d ago

Not sure, but if it's a new IP with new writers, new concepts, and the like that formed up mostly after the last game, I wouldn't expect much out of them for another two years at least. I'm not saying it isn't canned, just he wouldn't start on it until Ragnarok was done and they have a long cycles for new IP development.

Santa Monica has built up enough and utilizes other in-house Sony studios to support their stuff often, so I wouldn't be surprised if they can juggle many new games at once. Especially with Sony now pushing for more support after their Live Service decisions.

Cacabunga86d ago

I hope we get something to get excited about.. has been dry for a long while from WW studios

Eonjay85d ago

What are you basing the idea that the GOW spinoff is Corey's game? Wouldn't that make more sense to have the team that did Ragnarok produce the rumored title?

-Foxtrot85d ago (Edited 85d ago )

Why? Because it’s been 8 f***** years at this point since the 2018 game.

Corey’s is expected since he’s been working on his for longer

To have the God of War Ragnarok team put out Valhalla DLC and this new title 5 years after the last game while Corey’s is still a no show would be insane at this point.

The leakers point to this being his game aswell.

Profchaos85d ago

I agree i think i smell shite

KyRo85d ago

I hate how predictable Sony Studios have become. They are pretty much the GOW, Horizon and Spiderman studios now. They are great games but let's mix it up a bit. We used to give Xbox sh*t back in the day for being the Forza, Halo, Gears rinse and repeat but Sony is becoming the same.

Eonjay85d ago

The next four games coming out from Sony Studios are:
Marathon
Saros
Wolverine
Intergalactic
This is after Ghost of Yotei and Astrobot. So its more than a bit of a stretch to claim the are only doing God of War, Spiderman and Horizon.

KyRo85d ago

Eon, Marathon is on other platforms and something Bungie was working on before the Sony buyout.
Wolverine is yet another superhero third person cinematic melee combat game.
Intergalactic is another cinematic, third person melee combat game from what we know.
Saros is nothing more than Returnal reskin so far. It's all very boring, uninspired and safe.

Releasing other games doesn't mean they're not heavily relying on the same IPs over and over again just as Xbox did back in the day.

__SteakDeck__85d ago (Edited 85d ago )

@KyRo Now you’re contradicting yourself. First you say, PS is releasing the same franchises. But when @Eonjay gave you a list of the new franchises PS is working on, you’re going back to the usual Xbox fanboy talking points, saying they’re just more 3rd person games. Just be quiet man. Also. I wonder if you have the same take about Nintendo because they have been releasing the same franchises for 40 years.

__SteakDeck__85d ago

@-Foxtrot Seems like Cory had this planned for years. https://fandomwire.com/it-i...

He also teased it in his IGN interview after GOW 2018 released.

Lightning7787d ago

So they were suppose to be working on s New AAA IP something in the scifi genre. Did that get scrapped? They pulled back on LS and refocusing on the platform. Does that also mean less risks in the AAA space and going back to the same ip

LucasRuinedChildhood86d ago (Edited 86d ago )

"Does that also mean less risks in the AAA space and going back to the same ip"

Sony Santa Monica games:

God of War: Ascension (2013) - PS3
God of War (2018) - PS4
God of War Ragnarok (2022) - PS5

God of War: Ghost of Sparta (2010) - PSP

Lightning7786d ago

It was rumors they were doing a game that wasn't GoW at all but a brand new IP entirely.

fr0sty86d ago

Likely another team doing the new GOW while Corey works on the new project.

Mr Logic86d ago

You're confused. The sci-fi game was being directed by Stig Asmussen after GOW3. They worked on it for 3-4 years until it was canceled and he left the studio.

Extermin8or3_85d ago

The science fiction game was scrapped a decade ago. People are getting stuff mixed up. We never had any info what Corey's project actually was.

Zeke6885d ago

He said himself "I would love to do something completely different, sci-fi would be fun to explore" We will see what I do, but I wont work on next God Of War".

That was just months after GoW 2018 was released.
So nothing gets ""mixed up". When he said that most of us hoped he would indeed do a sci.fi game to mix things up a little. Sadly Sony seems to have pulled the reins on that.

Extermin8or3_85d ago

@Zeke68 Sony have pulled the reigns on nothing there is literally an interview form about 6 years ago where he talks about the fact he has a prequel story he'd like to see told but it has to come after Ragnarok. He even hints at Faye being playable/protagonist. The game won't be called god of war either apparently.

Jin_Sakai86d ago (Edited 86d ago )

Try something new already!

__SteakDeck__85d ago

Do you want Nintendo to try something new as well? Because they keep releasing Mario and Zelda. GOW is PS’s biggest franchise. You don’t move on from that.

GrmpyolGamer 86d ago

If that's true then it's not really a God of War game then is it

jznrpg86d ago

If it’s fun with a good story I am fine with it. Definitely unexpected but that could end up being a good thing. Only time will tell.
