Killzone 2: Gamestyle Review

Gamestyle: The search for that great PlayStation exclusive first person shooter continues. While Killzone 2 continues to pull over the eyes of many, it won't receive much time at Gamestyle. This is an average, generic experience. For all its lofty ambitions and hype it is an unbelievable failure, a real disappointment for all PlayStation 3 owners.

Looks like the xbots are still butthurt about Killzone 2 being better than Halo 3.

Now I await for the typical "sales argument" from the xbots. lol

papero26219d ago

Awesome review... to bad i enjoyed the hell out of the game already :(

Ill try to catch Gamestyle 5/10 review of inFamous in September xD

OhReginald6219d ago (Edited 6219d ago )

ouch this one review made killzone 2 on metacritic -1 from 92.....thats cold...ice cold.

looks like people dont like video games anymore.... *sigh*

CaseyRyback_CPO6219d ago (Edited 6219d ago )

I didn't know halo invented turret shooting either. I mean really.. the review portion was only a few paragraphs. Times like this makes me really wish Sony gave out a 30 million dollar ad campaign and $800 swag bags to reviewers.

That review was just ridiculous lol.

talltony6219d ago

im done with killzone 2 but by no means should this game be a 6! a 6!? really? just stupid people that dnt know how to reveiw. this game is a 9 and a solid 9 at that.

boodybandit6219d ago (Edited 6219d ago )

accepted this score yet turned away dozens of 90+ and a few perfect scores (a lot better written reviews then the one above).
Yet they allow this trash "Gamestyle"?
Yeah Metacritic is credible.
About as credible a Gamestyle.

Bathyj6219d ago

Thats precisly the intension of the review.
Not to inform people of the actual quality of the game or give an accurate appraisial of the fun you'll have, but mearly to drag the game down a little so people can say its not better than Gears or Halo.

I mean even if KZ isn't your exact cup of tea, you dont like the pace or the setting, no one can dispute the quality or that this game could never get a 6 from a fair judge.

I'm so done with games media. I only buy one magazine these days and dont even really trust them anymore. Its more out of habit from following them for 10 years and so I'll have something to read on the bog.

And online media is 10 times worse. Just like little dogs yapping behind a tall fence, people on the internet think they can say anything in anonimity without any repercussions and this gutless way of thinking has spread to these so called "journalist". They say anything for hits, and they know the more outrageous it is, the more attention they will get. I think we should bring back public stonings into modern society.

...."The combat in Killzone is like being hit over the head with a big stick, repeatedly. It never changes, or develops, leaving you to clear a street or capture a strategic point, facing fanatical resistance, slowly moving foot by foot to your goal."

***Wow, he never got past the first level.

"What the Helghast lack for in tactical knowledge, they certainly make up for in numbers and withstanding bullets."

**So he is saying that the enemy should be dieing in 1 shot. He also didn't notice that they flank and also use cover... What does he expect them to do? Call in airstrikes or snipe with a rocket launcher?

...."Very few distinctive weapons exist, neither side has the upper hand in firepower and you will struggle to find something really worthwhile."

**So again, the game shouldn't be balanced? So the ISA should have rocket launchers with scopes? Is he pissed there are no plasmids?

"There’s plenty of swearing and testosterone on show to a laughable effect, as this not Gears of War, yet so wants to be."

**Swearing and testorerone are now attributes to the Gears of War SAGA. Wow. Gears is also man vs aliens, Killzone is man vs man. Once again he didn't get past the first level. He just reads other reviews copy and paste. Track hits to page. Smile. Next week review: Infamous tries to hard to be Grand Theft Auto.

GamerStyle should be ashamed of themselves on just pointless score reductions. All reviews are opinions, but to knock a game for no valid reason is unacceptable. They should really "fire" Jason Julier for flame baiting. Oh wait he is the Site Editor.....

s8anicslayer6219d ago

Thet just had to do it just for hits

"the frame rate never enables fluid combat."

It was about this time in the article that I realized they based this entire review on videos they watched on their laptop running Windows 95.

Of all the criticisms you can level at Killzone 2, the frame rate isn't one of them.

SaberEdge6219d ago

This review is complete and utter crap.

Most people here know that I am more of a 360 fanboy, but Killzone 2 singlehandedly made me see the potential of the PS3. Killzone 2 is a brilliant game and any reviewer that says this game deserves a 6 has his head up his a$$.

It's obvious the reviewer had an axe to grind anyway. How the hell are we supposed to take somebody with such an obvious agenda seriously. Simply shameful. I didn't see it before but I think you guys are right, games journalism is going down the crapper.

English 101 laughs at gamestyle.com

At any rate, I see a wack article, I post it to steal their hits; especially for being months late, and still not off of the first area:

Can it be that almost five years have passed since the arrival of the original Killzone? Hyped to a detrimental extent of being a Halo-killer, it was light-years behind the Bungie original. Has Guerrilla finally learned from its mistakes and delivered?

For all the criticism levelled at the original Killzone, it certainly did harbour some striking character designs and architecture. Beneath such startling visuals, it possessed a frightening ability to annoy and alienate players. Guerrilla was sent home to think again, developing the average Killzone: Liberation, and the haphazard Shellshock Nam ’67. Sadly matters have not improved with the long awaited sequel, which is certainly the best piece of work from the studio so far, but out with this context, merely an average first person shooter.

Annoyingly it all starts off extremely well, a rousing speech from the Helghast leader, Scolar Visari, ushers in the opening credits and underlines the fascist makeup of his military aims. This sets the tone beautifully, the ISA are striking back and launching an assault on the Helghast home world. The context of nuclear weapons and needing the launch codes is thrown in, but Gamestyle never played too much attention, with both races being extremely advanced, it seemed ridiculous that the Helghast couldn’t call upon such weaponry themselves.

The storyline is threadbare and sees you taking the role of Alpha team member, Sergeant Tomas ‘Sev’ Sevchenko, an elite squad thrown into the main thrust of the invasion. There’s plenty of swearing and testosterone on show to a laughable effect, as this not Gears of War, yet so wants to be. The overview promises that the planet itself could be the greatest enemy, given its hostile conditions, but this is never developed or even explored. The mystery of the Helghast is overlooked; visiting their home planet could have been an ideal opportunity to learn more about their origins, yet the only civilian you’ll ever see is a miner. By ignoring such potential avenues, Killzone must rely solely on its combat, and this is where the real problems start to arise.

The combat in Killzone is like being hit over the head with a big stick, repeatedly. It never changes, or develops, leaving you to clear a street or capture a strategic point, facing fanatical resistance, slowly moving foot by foot to your goal. Your movement feels sluggish and the frame rate never enables fluid combat. This is a war of attrition, a total slog relying on cover and dealing with erratic AI on both sides. What the Helghast lack for in tactical knowledge, they certainly make up for in numbers and withstanding bullets. The constant stream of enemy soldiers becomes a real chore. Your teammates love to live dangerously, crossing your line of fire or dying in vulnerable spots, forcing you to try and resuscitate them. Both sides also show a real tenacity for trying to shoot through walls. The control and aiming feels too loose, while the weapons really mirror the World War II feel to the combat. Very few distinctive weapons exist, neither side has the upper hand in firepower and you will struggle to find something really worthwhile.

As you edge forward, through the linear levels there is not much sightseeing to be done. Despite the industrial feel to the landscape, the story soon runs out of steam, as Guerrilla throw everything into the mix, trying to avoid the fatal flat line. Towards the end you will find yourself back in orbit, defending the spaceships from your cannon position. The level is clearly ripped from Halo, yet the cannon aspect is hopelessly implemented. Then back on firm ground, expect a Mecha style suit as you go around destroying Helghast positions. These are instantly forgettable experiences, implemented in desperation to break up the monotony of combat.

Visually Killzone 2 is impressive but never to a jaw dropping extent. The production standards are lavish, sound effects and music combine to provide the loudest experience we’ve ever heard in a game. The PS3 trophies have been well implemented; forcing players to return to the main game, when they arguably would prefer to remain online. Yes, the online mode is for many the main attraction and long overdue. For a game of this stature and billing, Gamestyle would expect nothing else as Killzone 2 supports everything you would expect in a first person shooter. Taking inspiration from Halo, Call of Duty and Medal Of Honour, combined with a wide range of options. This is the least we’d expect from such a title, but as Gamestyle has been playing such games online since Quake 3 for the Dreamcast, we’re a little tired of defending positions, or guarding doorways. The whole online experience for this genre is stuck in a rut and that’s not a specific criticism to Killzone 2.

The search for that great PlayStation exclusive first person shooter continues. While Killzone 2 continues to pull over the eyes of many, it won’t receive much time at Gamestyle. This is an average, generic experience. For all its lofty ambitions and hype it is an unbelievable failure, a real disappointment for all PlayStation 3 owners.

SL1M DADDY6219d ago

From a guy that more than likely sucks at the game. It would seem to be the trend. The idiots that were no good at the game gave it a bad review.

callahan096219d ago (Edited 6219d ago )

What the hell?

First of all, this site has only existed since MARCH 2009 and has only about a dozen reviews under their belt, almost all of which score the games really low (their average score seemed to about a 6 out of 10). It's almost as if the site was created JUST to give a few big-name games controversially low scores so they can garner hits. The review is terribly written and his opinion is, quite frankly, unfounded.

This has no business being in the Metacritic average for a couple of reasons: 1) The site is too new and too low on content, why is it counted? 2) http://www.metacritic.com/a... It's not even listed in the sources that are counted, and yet, there it is on the Killzone 2 page, being counted. What's up with that?

Look it's n4ps3g the bot who summited this. It's like they are actively searching for any negative killzone 2 reviews since they know the 360 is losing steam like a failed train.

krouse936219d ago

@N4GFAKEPS3 yea a bastard and a real jew killer.

SmokingMonkey6219d ago

good job, Gamestyle

uuummmmm....who is Gamestyle?

"unbelievable failure" any REAL gamer, who has ever played a FPS would never say that about Killzone2. The lighting and hit/bullet detection system is unbeatable....and these jackasses are calling IT an unbelievable failure. WOW

ruibing6219d ago

Apparently they have 5 reviews...and ended up Metacritic. Pathetic.

ChampIDC6219d ago

Yeah, I really don't understand why these nobody sites get factored into the metascore. Oh well, the only thing we can do about it is refuse to give the site any hits.

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX568d ago (Edited 568d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne568d ago (Edited 568d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro568d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken568d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown568d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72568d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken568d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya568d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast568d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood568d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro797d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72797d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_797d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga797d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos797d ago (Edited 797d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23797d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000797d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin797d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole797d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix797d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989797d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor797d ago (Edited 797d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

797d ago
Michiel1989797d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor1102d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar1102d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg1101d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz1491101d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance11381101d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim1101d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC1101d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance11381101d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle1101d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix761101d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.

thesoftware7301101d ago (Edited 1101d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger1101d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca1101d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy1101d ago (Edited 1101d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain1101d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright1101d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
