Is xbox 360 elite worth it ?

I notice that you always seem to slip in comments that have no relevance to anything, and typically are obscene or angry. Yet, you manage to have 5 bubbles still. Pretty amazing if you ask me.

360 ELITE:

If you're entering the next gen console market then the ELITE may well be worth it. If you're a previous 360 owner, then the HDMI is the only reason.

hate microsoft all you want, but when microsoft releases IPTV and enable NetFlix on the 360. All you microsoft haters will be ctrying like little B!thes. Why? Because Sony has no plans for doing something similar. Digital distribution goes against and hurts blu-ray market penetration. Being able to download any movie including HD movies from home and renting them or buying them anytime you want 24/7 it can't be beaten. Sony comes up with something like this it would hurt blu-ray sells. Yeah, and for those of you that keep saying that it would take too long to download a movie and watch it. Have you try it? Did you know what you only have to wait like 5-10 mins before playing the movie you purchased? Thanks to their compression technology and background downloading it takes a lot less time to download a movie than to go to the video store and get it. And for those that like to have the physical copy of the movie, well I think that where Blu-ray or HD-DVD comes in. but trust me, for rental (which is a bigger market) most people rent movies, they will be more than happy if they can just download it and watch it.

Bladestar I have a question for you and most people here that believe that blu-ray or dvd for that matter won't be here for 5+ years strong.

How many DVD's do you own?

I have over 200 dvds. (ever growing)

I can't get all of that content on an 360 Super Elite let alone the 120gb coming with the Elite. I can't get it all on my 250gb hard drive. Let's just say they were all in HD format. What size hard drive would I need? How much do you think that'll cost?

I'll ask another question...How many parents do you know who download movies? People over 30? People over 25? (Not just to watch once but to keep) It's not a mainstream practice. People are still buying cd's more than downloading. I believe you're right that one day that will be the way to go but it's not now and probably won't be for some time. (Subjective opinion)

And that is US House of Representatives bill H.R. 5252. What this does is to eliminate network neutrality for the Internet. Currently, carriers cannot discriminate against traffic coming from any source since the Internet is considered a public network.

What H.R. 5252 does is that it allows carriers to treat their backbone networks as private networks. This opens the door for the carriers to go to a tiered billing scheme, charging more for priority handling of network traffic. You can thank your regional carriers for this.

Which means, that sites like YouTube, Google Video, and Microsoft's IP TV would have to pay the carriers extra due to the bandwidth intensive nature of their traffic. Now, when you start talking about HD movie downloads and streaming, regardless of the compression you use, you're still talking about a LOT of bandwidth...

Sooo... with Net Neutrality up in the air, I'm not sure how feasible the IP TV business plan will end up being... Unless they end up jacking up the price to download/stream the HD content (to recoup the losses they would be taking from increased rates from their bandwidth provider<s>)

Your good at it by feeding yourself Godzilla sh1t 247 you would have to be extremely dumb to think that alot of people would need IPTV when they dont. if its similiar to video on demand people would rather have on comcast than just have to buy an XBox 360 elite and waste there money on it.

I couldn’t agree any more, say goodbye to the money sucking disc format. The 360 has HD Gaming, IPTV, HD Movies, TV shows in HD, Music, all the downloadable content you would ever want and an online experience unmatched by anyone on the 360 and what does Sony have to match this Blu-Ray and nothing else. To top this all off the Xbox brand is the Red White and Blue of consoles (the underdog) and its wooping some a$$. MS is smart they go after the #1 market (america) and watch the rest just fall into place.

You're all wrong. With a cable modem, you can already download a full HD DVD or Blu Ray movie in less than 6 hours; compressed films only weigh ~5 gig, and can be gotten in about 2 hours or less. All off Usenet, for free! As long as your rig has the balls to play the HD DVD files, you're good to go. Why not have your cake and eat it too? Blu Ray Downloads!!!

I cannot care for IPTV, it's a good thing, but wait until the world equipped with fast global internet. not in my country dude, we averagely got 64Kbps here man... I don't think so it run IPTV....
I can't even play youtube smoothly.

IPTV is about as early as Blu-ray or HD-DVD the only thing is by the time people are ready for HD-DVD or Blu-ray it will already be a thing of the past. it will be like when music went from tape->cd->dvd BUT instead of 5.1 music it went to Digital distibution. same thing will happen here. ipods and mp3 players werent an over night thing you know...

yes everything needs time to be global, but it's more easy to produce DISC (CD,DVD,HD-DVD or BLURAY) in my country for sure...
it's been more than 10 years... but we are still using 64Kbps with cable internet. well some ISP offer the speed up to 2.6Kbps (but it's limited to 1 Gb up/download stream)
I don't think it will reach my country for another 10 years... and yeah that time PS4 is ready for release too. they may include IPTV too...
I thought they can update IPTV from their firmware update too rite?

trust me, my country will not improve their internet in short time for sure.

this comes from a troll with 1 bubble... you do know that both wifi, and blu-ray do nothing to improve the number of GAMES out there to play on the ps3 right now? you do know that sony on has only 2 3rd party exclusives worth a sh!t, MGS and FF, and they are looking more and more like they will be coming the 360 way... so while sony pissed thier 1 year lead away trying to FORCE Blu-Ray on thier fans M$ went out and took damn near every single exclusive they had. now what would you rather have... blu-ray or more GAMES for your GAME SYSTEM? me i'll take the games. thats why i got a 360... for $200 less i might add.

sorry bladestar, background downloading is for the current PS store. when the system is in place im sure sony will enable streaming and so forth. also dont for get this. sony has rights to much more movies and music than M$ does. it will be better than M$s offerings and its already included in the ps3 20gig and 60gig. its not in the nogig 360 as a matter of fact its not included in any 360 except the elite..i think M$ dropped the ball on this one. and are playing catch up. if you disagree why the system remake?

sony should focus on thier games before they focus on anything else or they wont have any one PLAYING thier systems. if they dont the PS3 will turn into the PSP, overpriced and not good for anything other than watching a movie or two with nore real games to speak of.

And when it comes to "sony has rights to much more movies and music than M$ does" you may be right when it comes to physical format but not when it comes to digital distribution. You will see movies even from Sony on the xbox 360. Did you miss the anouncement where NetFlix is joining forces with microsoft for digital distribution?
Microsoft is not playing catch up and you would see it if you remove your fanboy hat for 5 minutes. Sony and Microsoft are targeting different goals. It's true that some of those goals may need similar features. suchs as HDMI port and Harddrive but crap.. doesn't my cable box have a HDD and HDMI? You are acting as if Sony invented the HDD and the HDMI port. Microsoft is targeting digital distribution and the fact that the new 360 SKU did not integrated the HD-DVD drive is proof of that. for digital distribution only the larger hard drive is required. And HDMI for those that wanted it. Microsoft strategy is digital distribution and you can see it with what they are doing, Sony strategy is physical distribution. it's plain and simple.

would you say that microsoft is abandoning another piece of hardware?

we know that they are moving away from disc just by announcing the new elite.so now you're left with another paper weight add-on that wasn't fully supported.just like all the rest over the past 25+ years.microsoft with all that money just screws over a new group in only a year and a half.a shorter time than xbox 1 fans.

people talk about forced choice with bluray.how about forced choice with a hard drive if you need more room?can't switch it out like the ps3 that gives you the choice in what hard drive you want to get.and it costs more than it should.

what?no wifi?obviously they don't want to include it in the elite because that would make the $99 wifi adapter obsolete.because it would be cheaper being built in.

microsoft will make money with E distribution,but their crazy in thinking the 360 will be the center of the living room.there is a chance in america,but no way in other countries.some countries don't even have great internet connections.so what about them?they get left behind too?

I would not say that Msoft has abandoned the HD-DVD drive add-on Shadowgamer.

Its actually quite the contrary. According to sites like nexgenwars.com msoft has over 10million X360's sold. There are about/over 2 million Xbox live subscribers. Not all of the 2mil. are X360 owneers..that's a very safe assumption. Where does that leave the 8-9 million X360 owners who want HD movies but are not members of Live? That's right those are the ones that Msoft is trying to sell the HDDVD drive to. Abandonment? no...its merely "not putting all your eggs in one basket". Its the same thing sony is doing...however paying the extra money for a HD drive isn't mandatory as it is with PS3's blu-ray. Msoft and Sony both are trying to become the "center of the living room" as you said in your post. That's why you have the Playstation store, HOME, LIVE, Live Marketplace...etc. Those who want the HD movies and don't USE LIVE will buy HD-DVD drive. Those who don't use home will start to get BR movies. This is merely another option for potential customers to consider when purchasing a game console.

I don't know if E-dist is the way of the future as everyone seems to be claiming. For those with no desire to shell out 29.99 - 49.99 a month for broadband the disc format is gonna be around alot longer then some think. Whether it is BR, HDDVD, DVD or something new..there are to many potential problems with E-dist. for it to replace discs. Whoever wins this format race will be around for a while. I personally am found of DVD as it is generally half the cost of BR and HDDVD. Of the HD formats I like the features of HDDVD more. I'm not as impressed with BR as its features are just not as compelling. Its studio support is the only thing good it has going for it..in my opinion at least. At anyrate there better be a BOATLOAD of special features on the Spiderman 3 BR disc when it comes out this fall.

I think he Xbox "Elite" is worth the big bucks BUT its just not for me...my premium kicks @$$(eat it sony trolls) and I have no need for HDMI since my tv does not support it and my 20 gig HD is just fine with me...the thing is I love the Black BUT meh my current Xbox is just fine.

But first off $180 is F'ing ridiculous for a 120 Gig HDD now granted I wont buy it until IPTV is here and looks good (If it does). And Second if they don't drop the price soon or even switch to the 65nm chips I will start to lose faith that MS will continue the dominance they have over Sony. You have them by the balls right now MS, Why don't you start squeezing a little. I am starting to get pissed off about MS strategy. Not because they released the Elite, But because they have the kill right in front of them and they are just playing with it. Keep playing with it and it will escape and make you pay. Just plain dumb if you ask me. $100 price drop NOW !!

Supposedly this guy thinks that digital distribution will be mainstream in "two to three years".

For some reason (mainly the available download speeds in most areas right now, at least in the US) I don't see this happening for at LEAST another 5. Even then the HD content will make the files larger and will take longer to download, which will also in turn take up more space, so until everyone has around a terabyte of space (or at least 500GB of storage) then I again don't see this happening.

But this isn't about the next-gen format war. I apologize for derailing a little, but he seemed so arrogant about his conclusion of digital distribution when it is a widely debated subject and a very improbable medium in the near future.

How all 360 fans where arguing about how HDDVD was still in the fight and how it was better than bluray and now that there's another way of downloading HD content only for the 360 (for now) then that's the way to go..

No HDDVD is better comments anymore from the 360 fanboys..

ANYTHING and i mean anything that can make the PS3 looks inferior in the eyes of 360 fanboys, they will exploit it..

PS: There are still a LOT of people in this generation and i mean MASSES that are pretty comfortable with formats and they are not planning to forget about disks so soon.. There is a lot of market for bluray now and in the future..

People aren't going to buy movies on demand if they can't burn them into discs. And movie studios will be damned if they let people download AND burn movies into discs. Streaming would be a much better idea, but still, streaming is years away also because people like OWNING, not borrowing; at least there is a cultural barrier on that, and it's a marketing principle that people like to possess.

Also, broadband is too slow for HD content streaming (especially in the quality you get with Blu-ray or HD-DVD), and it's not getting fast enough until next-gen, or even next next gen. Furthermore, movies on demand would screw retailers, so there's no reason for retailers to keep selling content on demand equipment unless they recieve a huge incentive. So yeah, there are tons of bottlenecks that will take easily more than 5 years to overcome for digital content on demand to be the leader.

Robert Summa writes for joystiq, so it's no surprise he tries to spin HD-DVD and Blu-ray as worthless.
