Well apparently the *gamers* on this site use them like a bible. They swear by them. To tell the members of the opposite console how great there new exclusive is, or how great there system is (its like a security blanket for them).

They like to feel that they have made the right purchase. Unlike myself where I just buy all the systems available so u get all the games anyway. They also like think that "hardcore" FPS's are the only games people buy, and that its the backbone of the industry.

Obviously they were WAY off.

Wrong. 'Sales matters' as a fanboy tool to belittle other fanboys started with this gen. Never before among gamers has sales been such a venemous topic. Sales do matter, but to gamers, only to the point that your favorite franchises see another release. Beyond that it becomes a tool used by tools to make themselves feel better for having a small tool.

I don't agree. I think the PS3 is doing amazing things right now, but the 360 is not crap (well, except for the build quality).

I like both the 360 and the PS3 and the Wii honestly doesn't interest me that much at this point. Those are my opinions, and they have nothing to do with which one has sold more.

Quite a few of the best selling games are games that I don't particularly enjoy. On the other hand, some of my favorite games of all time are games that sold relatively poorly.

Your initial argument SUPPORTED the 360/Wii but you attempted to manipulate it to fit your opinion. You spoke about "speculation" but they you proceeded to be speculative.

So lets summarize. You said sales do count, then you didn't count them. You said that they are the only "facts we have at our disposal" and that everything else is "speculation" THEN YOU SPECULATED that the PS3 would "eclipse" the 360.

On this NOTE, low quality games DO NOT SELL on the same level as the games discussed in this article, so high sales do DIRECTLY reflect quality. The same way that Sony TV's hold a larger share of the HDTV market, because they are 'higher quality'. Higher quality products, sell better. Business 101...

Let me address each point specifically

1. Your 'speculation' clouded up your attempt to claim that sales do matter. Especially the fact that you ignored the sales by speculating, after you had condemned speculation. You talk about the PS3's "eventual" price drop, well how about the 360's "eventual" price drop?. If the PS3 overtakes the 360.. by the time the next generation comes along, then it will not have won nor have eclipsed anything. In this case, people will have purposely stopped buying the 360 in order to jump into next generation, so PS3 vs 360 would be irrelevant. It would instead be Xbox 720 vs PS4, or Xbox720 vs. 'no PS4'.

2. As i said you condone sales figures, then you condemn speculation. Then you ignore the sales numbers and speculate. Had you based your opinion off the article (which was on sales) or based your opinion of your own statements, it would have been impossible for you to come to such a speculative conclusion. My imitation of you: "the PS3 will eclipse the 360, because it sold more units in japan(Sony) this month" If you look at the world sales, you will see that the 360 actually sold more this month.... which is important to you right? considering you just said sales DO matter.

3.the term "art" is very subjective. For the most part, there are several game dynamics 'in common' that we all seek, or dislike. For example, in Too Human, everyone dislikes the automatic camera and long death animation. In COD everyone likes the leveling system, the modern "aspect", etc, etc. When we play a game, our experiences most likely are not different, how much we enjoy that experience is different. Thanks to the limits of games, and the genre classification, it is overly "philosophical" to try and attempt to label games as "art" in the same sense of a painting (however, even amongst paintings, certain ones are considered prestigious). I can almost guarantee you that the MAJORITY of people all have a similar idea of what features a "FPS" should have. When it comes to describing sales we are, in fact, discussing the "majority", thus this does suffice.

However i feel compelled to point out a larger flaw with your argument. Before a game is released, press releases explain every aspect of the game, every feature it has. Similarly we can see screenshots, watch videos and, once the game is released, we can rent it. Therefore it is not as if we all just go 'blindly' buy a game and then some of us love it and some of us don't. If we did this, then sales would reflect NOTHING because we wouldn't have based our purchase on any criteria. We usually know BEFORE HAND if the game is "our taste" and if we will "enjoy it". After the initial 'first wave of buyers' all other sales reflect the quality of the game. Think of it like this: If the videos, screenshots and press releases are all positive, the game will begin to sell. If the resulting game is high quality, then it will begin to sell MORE. Thus why games like Halo sell several 'initial copies', and then reach "platinum status" once it has been proven that the game IS high quality, and that the majoirty enjoys it. Or why the sales of games that the public deem "horrible" begin to decline.

You fail to recognize the "gaming community" and that instinctual need to purchase games that are considered, by the majority, to be good games. It's the same reason why 'Titanic' sold more tickets than 'Fools Gold' featuring Matthew Mcconaughey. Sure... every 1 out of 10 people will tell you fools gold is better,(((((((but we are SPECIFICALLY addressing this exact issue when we look at sales))))))). By stating that the 360 has sold 10 million more units(20m to 30m) we are implying that 2 out of 3 people like the 360 better.

Even in the case of a painting, MOST PEOPLE like a painting that was "painted well", the personal preference comes down to color or style. In the case of video games if you have a Different "style" you pick up a different genre... EACH GENRE IS SUBJECT TO BEING "GOOD" or "BAD"? So this doesn't matter. Its incredibly hard to word this, the point is that preference has no baring on majority. The majority is just WHERE THAT PREFERENCE LIES, and when looking at sales/success/"better&quo t;, that is exactly what we are looking for.

In the case of games, sure you can find some "good" games that didn't sell well, and you can find some "bad" games that sold wonderfully. But 99% of the time the "good" games are the ones that sell, and the "bad" games are the ones that don't. What you are speaking of, are outliers (pre-college math), taking them into consideration just skews the argument in your favor, the same way it skews the data.

4. you said the PS3 wins, despite evidence to the contrary. That is what fanboys do, specifically PS3 fanboys. Buyers remorse for the win.

You should probably take a few classes in higher education before you attempt to tell me i am wrong.

I am not going to re-explain it in depth, the fact of the matter is that Sales reflect quality. Quality items, sell more. Otherwise... there would be literally no rhyme, no reason, no substance to economy, the market or to business. You completely disregarded my statement without understanding the basic principals behind it. In gaming there is whats called a "fan base", in the case of Killzone2 this fanbase consists of FPS fans, Killzone fans, and PS3 fans. These 3 groups consist of people who will decide weather they want Killzone2 or weather they do not, right of the bat. Those left over, are considered "undecided". Thus when the game is released the "first wave" of buyers that i am referring to, are those whom have decided they WILL IN-FACT BUY THE GAME. Weather this means they will buy it on day 1, or wait a couple months is irrelevant, Their mind has been made up. As for those who are undecided they need a REASON to buy the game. In 90% of all cases, that reason will be based on the 'HOW GOOD THE GAME IS'. Often times, this means consulting friends, or professionals, on how 'good' the game is. This isn't arguable, this is just a general concept for how sales, particularly in the gaming(movies too) industry, tend to work. However my point was intended to counter the post above me, and was not meant to be taken out of context.

This model takes into consideration the people who will buy a game REGARDLESS of how good it is (those who make their mind up off the bat). At the same time it takes into consideration the fact that games DO BETTER IF THEY ARE BETTER (those undecided). In today's market most of us fall into the 'undecided' category especially due to prices. I have no doubt that your 'friends' instantly buy their games without any reason, because they are PS3 owners and this seems to be a trend. But most of us do not, most of us want a quality experience. If there is a game released that offers a quality experience, then we purchase it. Trying to deny this in any way, is absolutely stupid.

The fact that remains is that SALES are the one and only, the absolute SINGLE way that we can measure how 'good' a game is. All other measurements are based on opinion, but are not irrelevant. If you look at a 'best sellers' list, such as the one in this article, you will notice that all the games listed are high rated, and high quality (albeit based on majority opinion). This reveals an obviously strong correlation between "quality" and "sales".

By trying to deny this, you are insisting that it is just 'miraculously coincidental' that 99% of the highest selling games are not only rated highly, but also considered high quality. You are also implying that i could sell dirt with sauce on it and make just as much money, IF NOT MORE, than a famous Italian chef. After all quality doesn't = sales.. right?. What makes this so pathetic, is that it is INTUITIVE that higher quality = more sales. The same way better sex = more sex. There is no need for a fancy explanation... better games sell better.. pure and simple.

In the case of Kilzone2 , it's overall sales were hurt by its lack of originality. How many FPS games have been released since the dawn of time? Killzone, is yet another shooting game. It's small hitches are not enough to separate it from the pack. The truth is, there is another game out there that is better, that everyone already has. Call of duty Modern warfare. Most of us like it better, so please flame me with your opinion. Regardless, Killzone2 DOES HAVE GOOD RATINGS, and therefore it is doing, relatively, amazing as far as FPS go, on the PS3, which further supports my point.
