This entire article is about having Picture in Picture when playing a BD?

I for one can't stand PIP, but can someone chime in with some benefits to this?

I am seriously curious.

The ps3 is fine. It's nothing to do with the laser diode or anything like that...it's about available memory...which the ps3 has plenty of...current blu-ray players dont have it, and aren't built to have the software which the ps3 will get. They wouldn't announce this unless their poster child could handle it.

I would like PIP - I do film studies, it is a very useful feature.

Yeah, why the hell would you want to watch pip during a movie? Kids with ADD need to watch 2 movies at once or something??

But wht the heck would I care about PIP? I put on a movie in full screen in the dark with popcorn! I watch in from begining to end.

The ps3 can do it with a firmware update because it does have the available memory and processing power required, but unfortunately early standalone models don't.

The BD-J features are really interesting to read about. Using a programming language like Java really expands the possibilities for interactive features far beyond what could be done in any markup text language. One thing is that it would let you play games (not ps3 games, just java based games on the disc) off of the BluRay movie discs. Plus the menus and special features can just get more complex and interactive with Java replacing markup language. Unfortunately most of this won't happen until BD-J 2.0 is made mandatory (think summer 2008 at the earliest).

I thought that the whole idea of creating a 'standard' was to make a set of rules and specifications to make sure that everything works correctly together. So now you have a first batch of BD movies that have crappy encoding and look nowhere near as good as HD-DVD's and now this latest group of changes/upgrades. If it wasn't ready, why launch it? You could take the first DVD player on the market and it would be able to play a DVD that you bought yesterday. You can't change standards as you go along...that doesn't make it much of a 'standard' now, does it? I think this news is going to scare a lot of customers off of BD, especially if the HD-DVD group decides to latch onto it.

It's not necessarily about users liking PiP or not, but it's the studio's desire to support certain features within their releases, i.e., Disney and Warner's delay of the Matrix.

...for PS3 and Blu-ray. I think the PS3 can overcome this with a firmware update. Still, I think what the consumer wants with HD-movies is video, audio and content quality before interactivity. After all, who really used "Angle change" on DVDs? I'm too lazy to watch the extras that take place at the same time the movie is playing. They are nice, but not fundamental.

I'd still like it fixed, though. More is better. lol

I dont know if dante is a legitamate fanboy, but since M$ supports HDDVD ill assume hes a fanboy. To be frank id prefer a system that has a problem that can be fixed through a update rather than a system where i had to return and wait a month to received a previously owned one. Luckily for me my second 360 was the last one i had to return but recognize having to return an entire system is a pretty big deal for having to wait in line overnight and paying 400 bucks for a system. (500 where i live)
